I second that opinion speaking strictly as a Canon shooter. I would say add a 50mm f/1.8 as your budget allows it, and you're good to go for a starter kit.

Respectfully I disagree, instagram (though I don't use or totally understand the hype) has got people using their camera phones and making pictures more accessible to the masses. As a lover of photography, I can't really be mad at that. An instragram photo can never compare to the real deal...
