Interesting, this is the first thing that points towards it being (a little bit) random after all. The window is short, but odds might just be even once you reach the standby screen.

I picked up my pair at 7:30 P.M. or so. They still had some, but sizes were starting to sell out.

Length might be the same but kids sizes are shaped differently than adult's sizes. They're generally wider and just...weirdly boxy overall.
