Yeah Michigan is a big mystery. NOBODY knows whats coming. Not even us fans. Things are being kept very quiet and the team they fielded in the spring willbe a lot different than the one they field in the fall. Freshmen are gonna have to step up and play. So will some guys that have underachieved under the oldregime. Everybody has a fresh start and the majority are taking advantage of it. The OL is not the most veteran or star packed but they are all hard workersthat are buying into RR and Frey.

The defense is gonna be fine and could be special. A lot of playmakers but the safeties and some LBs are both untested. They will play fast and aggressive.I think they could be very reminescent of the 2006 D. But we are gonna need a leader to step up in the LB corps like Harris did.
I like this teams chances at making a little noise. The offense is gonna be fun and frustrting to watch, but if the D can step up and cause TOs andthe O limit them, we could be good. I am looking at 8 wins.

http://OFFENSE

THE SCHEME: The Volunteers traditionally have run a pro-set attack with a West Coast feel and use multiple formations. New coordinatorDave Clawson - who had been coach at Division I-AA Richmond -has said he will incorporate some traits of the spread. Look for elements of the pro set, along with three-receiver sets and two-tight end sets.

Running back Arian Foster has a chance to become Tennessee's all-time leading rusher.

STAR POWER: Senior tailback Arian Foster isn't as heralded or highly touted as some past Vols tailbacks. Buthe's a strong runner with good speed and earned All-SEC recognition in 2007, when he rushed for 1,193 yards. He needs 685 yards this season to become theVols' leading career rusher.
IMPACT NEWCOMER: Tight end BrandonWarren left Florida State, where he played as a freshman, and enrolled at Tennessee after attending junior college for a year. Whether he stayed in shaperemains to be seen, and he still has to be cleared to play by the NCAA. But he could make a big contribution when/if he's declared eligible.

IT'S HIS TIME: Junior quarterback Jonathan Crompton played sparingly behind Erik Ainge the past two seasons, but now takesover the offense. Crompton had a solid performance in place of an injured Ainge in a 28-24 loss to LSU in 2006. Last season, though, he only attempted 12passes. A strong runner, he has to show he can be an efficient passer, too.

STRONGEST AREA: The Vols led the nation by allowing just four sacks in 2007, and that was over 14 games. Four full-time starters return, headed by all-conference candidates Anthony Parker atguard and Ramon Foster at tackle. The one "new"starter is right guard Jacques McClendon, and he startedsix times last season after Chris Scott moved to lefttackle when an injury sidelined Eric Young.

WEAKEST AREA: Crompton has attempted only 78 passes in his college career, and more than half have been incomplete. His inexperience is themain concern for an otherwise solid offense. He threw too many interceptions in the spring, but in previous seasons when Tennessee had a first-year startingquarterback, the Vols were effective in the running game. That should be the case again this season.

OVERVIEW: A new starting quarterback always is accompanied by a measure of apprehension, and it won't be any different in Knoxville.Crompton's ascension into the starting lineup will raise some questions, but few first-time starting quarterbacks step into a better situation. Cromptonwill have an experienced line in front of him, a 1,000-yard rusher behind him and three receivers who made more than 50 receptions last season. The Vols scoredat least 30 points in eight games in '07 and project to be productive again. This season, though, they're likely to run more often with Foster headinga talented group of tailbacks. Crompton also is an accomplished runner, which is another advantage for a new starter.

39-11

That's the record for Phillip Fulmer's teams with a first-year starting quarterback, which the Vols will have this season. That includes a national championship in 1998 with Tee Martin as a first-year starter and an SEC East title in 2004 when Brent Schaeffer, Erik Ainge and Rick Clausen were first-year starters and shared time.

GRADE: B.
http://DEFENSE

THE SCHEME: Over the years, Tennessee has been well-served by its 4-3 scheme. The Volunteers are determined to apply pressure andaren't hesitant to blitz. They figure to do that even more in '08. With exceptional talent and depth in the secondary, the Vols likely will go intotheir six-defensive back "Mustang Package" frequently and blitz from a lot of angles.

STAR POWER: Even though he was only a freshman last season, strong safety Eric Berry was hyped as an emerging star. He lived up to the hype, with fiveinterceptions, nine pass breakups and 86 tackles to earn freshman All-America acclaim. With a season of experience, he should be better in '08.

IMPACT NEWCOMER: Both of last season's starters at end are gone, so the Vols need help there. Gerald Williams may be able to provide it. Williams, who originally signedwith Tennessee in 2005, last season starred at City College of San Francisco, where he posted 146 tackles and forced six fumbles in helping his team win aversion of the junior college national championship.

IT'S HIS TIME: Senior Robert Ayershas the size, speed and ability of an All-SEC end. Now, he needs to show he can produce. The Vols have been waiting on him to live up to his vast potential. The time is now. As a reserve, he led Tennessee with four sacks and 12 tackles for loss last season. Coaches are counting on him to do more as a starter.

spacer1.gif

spacer1.gif

Eric Berry intercepted five passes and earned freshman All-America honors last season.

STRONGEST AREA: The secondary is talented and deep, and features a safety tandem that could be among the best in the country. Berry has gainedstar status at strong safety. Free safety Demetrice Morley- a productive player in 2005 and '06 - missed the 2007 season but is back after regaining his academic eligibility. The Vols have three players whostarted at least seven games at cornerback last season: Marsalous Johnson, Brent Vinson and DeAngelo Willingham. Those three plus Dennis Rogan will battle it out for starting jobs, and all four will see extensive time.
BIGGEST PROBLEM: The Vols were only so-so against the run and no better with their pass rush last season, so the line remains an area ofconcern. Adding to the stress is that both starters at end must be replaced. Ayers could surface as a dominant player, but the Vols are thin and mostlyunproven up front.

OVERVIEW: That talented secondary should provide the Vols opportunity to be creative with their blitzes and coverages. Throwing onTennessee won't be easy. That's the good news. The bad news is that Tennessee struggled against the run in '07, ranking just 70th in the country inrush defense. Both starting ends and two starting linebackers, including All-SEC performer Jerod Mayo, are gone. There are solid players such as Ayers and endBen Martin ready to step up, but depth is thin up front. If the Vols avoid injuries, they could develop into a solid unit as the season progresses. If depth becomes an issue in the front seven, they could be introuble.

GRADE: C+.

http://SPECIAL TEAMS

Punter Britton Colquitt has been suspended for thefirst five games, which is the only concern for the kicking game. Sophomore Chad Cunningham will handle punting duties until Colquitt returns. Cunningham was erraticin the spring. Sophomore kicker Daniel Lincoln converted21 of 29 field-goal attempts and earned All-SEC recognition last season. The return game will be excellent with Rogan, Gerald Jones and Lennon Creer bringingback kicks.

GRADE: B+.

http://COACHING

Few coaches can match Phillip Fulmer for consistency. Lastseason was the fourth 10-win season for the Vols this decade and they've won five SEC East titles in the past decade, yet he frequently catches heat fromVols fans wanting more. Fulmer supporters point out that the Vols won the SEC East last season, closed the season with a bowl victory and got better as theseason progressed. His detractors rebut by mentioning blowout losses to Florida and Alabama by a combined 64 points last season. This season, Fulmer has fournew offensive coaches, including Clawson, who had tremendous success as a head coach and offensive coordinator in Division I-AA. Any uncertainty that may comewith so many new offensive coaches is balanced by the reliability of the defense led by John Chavis, who has held the defensive coordinator position since 1995. In that span,Tennessee has been among the SEC's top-three defenses eight times.

http://SCHEDULE

Perhaps no team in America faces a more difficult first month than Tennessee. The Vols' September schedule includes games against UCLA, Florida andAuburn. Adding to the degree of difficulty is that two of those games - UCLA and Auburn - are on the road. That's a concern because the Vols were 3-4 ingames away from Knoxville last season, and that included an overtime win at Kentucky. It's not out of the question to suggest the Vols could be 1-3 headinginto October. Of course, they also could be 3-1 or 4-0 and headed for a big year. Trips to Georgia and South Carolina and a home game with Alabama loom inOctober and November, but the final three games are against Wyoming, Kentucky and Vanderbilt.

http://OUTLOOK

As has frequently been the case in recent seasons, there is quite a buzz around Knoxville. This time, though, the buzz is rife with questions. Curious fansare wondering what to expect from a new offensive coordinator and a new quarterback. The hope, of course, is that they will produce some new wrinkles to avengelast season's embarrassing losses to Florida and Alabama. Yet even with that uncertainty, there is a quiet confidence on Rocky Top that stems fromfinishing last season with six victories in the last seven games and pushing eventual national champion LSU to the limit in the SEC Championship Game. If themomentum from that finish carries over, the Volunteers could be in the thick of the SEC championship race again. But they're projected no better than thirdin the SEC East behind Florida and Georgia. That actually may play in the Volunteers' favor, though. Historically under Fulmer, Tennessee is most dangerousin those rare occasions when it's in an underdog role.

He's still that dude though.

Todd Doxey, a University of Oregon football player, died Sunday after reportedly jumping off a bridge into the McKenzie River, according to the Web sites forThe Register-Guard and KEZI-TV in Eugene.

Doxey, a 19-year-old who was born in San Diego, was a redshirt freshman whose position on the team was rover.

According to The Register-Guard Web site, Doxey began swimming across the current toward a boat ramp. Witnesses said Doxey began to struggle and had difficultykeeping his head above water, according to the Lane County Sheriff's Office.

A fisherman pulled Doxey from the water. Doxey died at a hospital, KEZI reported.

I will take the money Adidas gave the university over what those cheap bastards at Nike give out. Plus, it will help a little in upgrading the facilities, which were horribly lacking. Its not gonna cover it all but it does bring in at least double what Nike was paying us.
USC jumps to No. 2; Rutgers, Vols enter top 10
Recruits like ESPN 150 Watch List QB Tom Savage have Rutgers in the top 10 for the first time.
Even when our first edition of the top 10 classes came out in the first week of June, it was -- and still is -- extremely difficult to come up with a team ranking. Not every team plays with the same deck and number of commits vs. quality of commits can often skew these rankings at such an early juncture.
With that being said, Texas, who we are not convinced would be our No. 1 class in February (or even October for that matter), remains No. 1 at this stage for its combination of numbers and quality prospects. Ohio State has tremendous numbers and quality from the top through the middle of the class, but we still question some of the bottom of its class, and feel Texas' is stronger top-to-bottom. Nonetheless, it has continued to add good players while LSU and Georgia have slowed their paces somewhat, so OSU has elevated above Georgia and LSU.

We feel there will be a ranking tug-o-war between LSU, Georgia and OSU all the way to February and remember, numbers do not mean everything.

Yes, we have moved USC into the top two. Its combination of outstanding prospects with speed and athleticism, coupled with good numbers gives us confidence the Trojans are on their way to a premier class. They have many potential impact players and quality from top to bottom.

It is amazing what winning and national television exposure can do for a program and now all the fruits of Rutgers' labor are starting to pay dividends as it enters into our top 10 for the first time ever. Its class is extremely strong on defense with speed and playmakers, and the most important piece of the puzzle might be its quarterback of the future Tom Savage (Philadelphia/Cardinal O'Hara).

Are the Volunteers on their way back? Early indications are the addition of new offensive wiz David Clawson has proved to be pivotal on the recruiting trail with offensive skill players and quarterbacks jumping on board early, with the likes of QB Josh Nunes (Upland, Calif.) and RB Jarvis Giles (Tampa, Fla./Gaither). The surprising contract extension of Phil Fulmer won't hurt down the road either.

Below is a look at our updated, long-ways-away-from-being-final top-10 recruiting classes.

Top 2009 recruiting classes (July 2008)
(verbal commitments as of July 8, 2008)
(previous rank in parenthesis)

1. (1) Texas

Frenship HS athletics

Mason Walters is one of four offensive linemen committed to Texas.
Numbers coupled with overall top-to-bottom talent keep the Longhorns here... for now. They have a unique situation not having to leave their state but also pass up a lot of good players by not doing so.
30.gif

2. (5) USC
15 verbal commitments
Speed, speed and more speed. Stealing ATH Byron Moore away from crosstown rival UCLA was big. The Trojans have too many players not to be recognized, and at this pace they could have a special class come February.
194.gif

3. (6) Ohio State
25 verbal commitments
The number of commits is pretty impressive and so are the top six or seven players. Looks like the Buckeyes' coaching staff can now spend their time sewing things up, while focusing on the 2010 class and making sure these birds don't fly the coop over the next several months.

4. (2) LSU
13 verbal commitments

Tom Hauck

ESPN 150 Watch List linebacker Jon Bostic has LSU among his schools of interest.
It has been slow going for the defending national champs over the last five weeks, but the next target for them is sure to be OLB Jon Bostic (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach). Expect things to heat up for them again late summer/early fall.
61.gif

5. (3) Georgia
11 verbal commitments
Speaking of slow going, the Bulldogs are circling the airport and have been in a holding pattern for sometime now, but the pups that are on board are excellent. O-Line, quarterback and running back seem to be set for quite awhile in Athens.
228.gif

6. (6) Clemson
10 verbal commitments
After exploding out of the gate, the Tigers have slowed somewhat as well. Running back seems to be a strength again with underrated Larry Raper (Shelby, N.C.) and Ben Axon (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) on board. With all these players, expectations at Clemson are going to skyrocket -- especially if it can live up to the hype this fall.
201.gif

7. (7) Oklahoma
14 verbal commitments
Yet another jet circling the airport. The Sooners should expect a couple of O-Line prospects to bolster this group in the coming months. The development of OLB Ronnell Lewis (Dewar, Okla.) will be nice to follow especially if he can find a home and settle in against great competition.
52.gif

8. ( Florida State
12 verbal commitments
The addition of a kicker here in Dustin Hopkins (Houston/Clear Lake) is huge -- he can kick and punt. For the second year in a row, FSU is off to a fast start after traditionally making waves at the end.

9. (NR) Rutgers

[+] Enlarge

Tom Hauck/ESPN.com

Je'ron Stokes was the first player to commit to Tennessee's 2009 class.
19 verbal commitments
We mentioned QB Tom Savage, but the defensive secondary is being taken care of as well. Cornerback Ryan Logan (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) and safeties Gerald Hodges (Paulsboro, N.J.) and Sanu Mohamed (South Brunswick, N.J.) can run. Updated stadium expansion isn't hurting them either.
2633.gif

10. (NR) Tennessee
11 verbal commitments
Wide receiver Je'Ron Stokes (Philadelphia/North East) is a much needed vertical threat and Damien Thigpen (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) is lightning in a bottle and would be great for David Clawson's offense, but he might be tailored for the corner position.
On the cusp: Auburn, South Florida, Alabama, Michigan, North Carolina, Penn State and Texas A&M.

Bill Conley, Craig Haubert and Billy Tucker contributed to this story.

I'm happy with the jerseys. They look pretty good in person. Adidas wasn't going to be given the option to mess with things and they did a good job.

Speaking of facilities... a lil addition to the new big-big-house is in the works.

Kinda slow around A2 right now, newbs is keeping up with pretty much the good stuff. I need my college football fix bad. Two-a-days are right around thecorner.

Kind of silly for them to talk about how teams are slowing considering its still quite early in the recruiting process.

I'd post some summer workout pics of Clemson's Freshman class but I doubt:
A) Any of you care about Clemson
B) SOME of you don't need to see these dudes without shirts on

Anyway, Jamie Harper is somewhere around 230 lbs as a true Fr RB.
Sr Rendrick Taylor is up to about 250 lbs...WR/maybe H-back/RB. He got a shot at LB in the Spring, but that didn't work out.

Right now tO$U has the #1 class. They have 24 commits and they class is about as balanced as you can get. The only thing they are lacking is a QB and they haveTP in the last class so it really doesn't matter. They have an unreal class as of now and to say it is the 3rd best class shows ESPN's failure onceagain in recruiting.

Rutgers is getting a lot of love for taking a ton of mediocre guys. Savage is the headliner and has been called by Jersey guys as a worout/camp warrior.Outside of him and Des Scott there isn't much to get excited about.
