Interview: Joshua Clottey talks Cotto, Margarito, Pacquiao/Mayweather, and More....
18.06.09 - Interview by Vivek Wallace: Despite the questionable decision rendered last Saturday at New York City's Madison Square Garden, it appears that Ghana's favorite son has found reason to stand firm amidst a world that often shakes around him. The unfortunate mishaps in his career continue to multiply as his disgruntled fan base steadily divides from the mainstream, but ironically, the lesson to be learned is that in life, one can experience addition by subtraction. In the words of the Ghanaian native, he "never knew that he had such support around the world until he noticed the passion of fans who felt his pain" after this recent loss. That statement contained great depth, but in the grand scheme of things, it served as little more than the tip of the 'iceberg', as the next 20 minutes I spent chatting with this warrior would be far more intricate. Those who wonder what's on his mind have to look no further. Unparalleled, unequivocal, and unambiguous, here are the words directly from the horses mouth.....unedited:

VW: Joshua, now that the fight is over and you've had some time to reflect and analyze, what exactly are your thoughts about how things unfolded last Saturday night?

JC: My thoughts is that I won the fight. There was no question in my mind that the fight would be good for the people, and it was. The judges did what they had to do, it can't be changed, so now I've just stopped thinking about it and moved on.http://

VW: You did a great job silencing the Cotto Puerto Rican supporters and taking them out of the fight. Maybe too great because in the minds of some, it may have given you a false sense of security that you were ahead on the scorecards when apparently you weren't. Was there any point during the fight where you thought you needed to do more to get the win?

JC: From the beginning, throughout the entire fight, I knew that I was hurting him and I knew when he was trying to hit me, I was blocking and absorbing his punches. Throughout the fight I knew what he was doing. When I came with the combinations, he tried to counter with the left and with the uppercut, so I told myself, uh oh, you better be careful! From there I landed my punches and did what I had to do. I knew from the start that I was landing the cleaner punches.

VW: Now that the fight is past, looking ahead to the future, Bob Arum has stated that he plans to put a fight together between Pacquiao and Cotto. Rumor has it that Pacquiao will take Cotto, but would still rather face Mayweather. Now that Mayweather is off the hook in the Marquez fight, if he somehow gets that fight with Pacquiao first, are there any plans on behalf of your camp to demand a Cotto rematch?

JC: That would be good for me and the fans because Cotto would have to help me give the fans another fight they want to see, which is a rematch between me and him. We must settle the score. I don't understand how they gave him the decision, so I think we should have a rematch to show the fans who is really the best.

VW: If for some reason you can't get Cotto, and neither Williams or Mosley step up, is there any possibility that your camp will pursue a fight with young and highly talented WBC Champ Andre Berto?

JC: Exaclty. I would prefer Mosley or Williams, but if they don't want to face me, I would love to face Berto. I don't duck anyone and I'm not afraid of anyone. I respect Berto greatly, but he has a title, so I would love to face him too.

VW: Antonio Margarito is currently suspended, as you know for the loaded glove scandal. Many suspect that he probably used loaded gloves for quite some time. When you look back, do you think Margarito was using anything illegal in the fight that you had with him?

JC: Everyone ask me that. (laughs). The truth is, nobody knows how long Margarito was doing that. I don't know if he was using it for a long time, but I know he wasn't using them on me, because when he fought me, he never hurt me. So he wasn't using it on me, I know.

VW: Ok. Pardon me for letting the fan side come out here, but I speak to fans around the globe on many levels and I want to put a fan respective argument to rest by getting your opinion on two things. First question - You've been in the ring with both Margarito and Cotto now. Despite the results of their fight, who do you think is the better fighter, and who would you say packs the most punch....who was stronger?

JC: Cotto is the better fighter. Far, far, far, far, far better. Margarito is tall, so when he hits you, depending on his distance, you feel it or you may not; But Cotto is short and low, so his angles are more precise, more compact. Cotto I think was much stronger, to me. When they fought, Cotto was beating Margarito until he lost.

VW: Ok. Second question - If Mayweather was to fight Manny Pacquiao, who do you like in that fight and why?

JC: (Laughs). This is a fight I would love to watch. I love and respect these two guys more than anyone. To be honest, Pacquiao is the best right now. And also, we've never seen Floyd Mayweather face a great southpaw like this one. Pacquiao would give Mayweather a helluva fight. He's not gonna allow Mayweather to do what he wants to do, he will force him to fight. Mayweather is just such a smart fighter. He is the best, and I love to watch him, but Pacquiao is my favorite to watch right now. I can't tell you who would win that one.

VW: Final question champ. What would you like to say to all of your supporters around the globe?

JC: I did not like the decision in this fight, but I am happy because I never knew that I had so many beautiful supporters around the world like this until now. I fight for every last one of them and will be back soon. I want to take the time to thank them all. From you for being a great and very fair journalist, to HBO, to the staff at Madison Square Garden and the local commission for allowing me to display my talent to the world. I loss the fight, but I won the support. I love you all.

So there you have it. Less than a week after the latest bump in his road, Clottey confirms no regrets for the present, no resentment from the past. And why should he? With an attitude like that and a ton of supporters like this, why look down when the road ahead is indeed looking up? Stand by ladies and gents....I don't think we've seen the last of the 'Grand Master'!!

Good interview. Clottey seems like a cool dude, I just wish he wouldn't have cruised the last couple of rounds

I've seen this so many times but it just hit me...why the hell did Cotto back off here?? I know Clottey didn't appear hurt at the end but he wasgetting punches through and who knows what would have happened if he continued to pour it on a little longer.

^Thanks

yungmatt, I think your right. I went back and watched it and he threw about 15 punches in a row during that flurry.

Top Rank has made official its signing of interim featherweight titlist Yuriorkis Gamboa, the 2004 Cuban Olympic gold medalist and one of boxing's most dynamic fighters. Top Rank is coming on as co-promoter with Arena-Box and has added Gamboa (15-0, 13 KOs) to its July 25 "Latin Fury" PPV card headlined by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. against Jason LeHoullier in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Gamboa will make his first defense against Panama's Whyber Garcia (22-6, 15 KOs), who is two fights removed from a fifth-round knockout loss to junior lightweight titlist Jorge Linares. Eventually, Top Rank's Bob Arum wants to match Gamboa and junior featherweight titlist Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico. If Lopez wins a June 27 defense in the main event of another "Latin Fury" PPV and Gamboa beats Garcia, Arum told ESPN.com they'll be featured in separate defenses Sept. 26 on a PPV card from New York's Madison Square Garden Theater. Arum, hoping to build Lopez into a New York mainstay like he did with Miguel Cotto, sees Gamboa-Lopez as a big fight when Lopez is ready to move up in weight. "A fight between Gamboa and Lopez, to my mind, will be a major, major attraction," Arum said. "We'll put them on the same card in September and the plan is to ultimately match them. When that will be is when the stars are aligned."
Although Joshua Clottey came up short in a split decision loss to Cotto last Saturday, Arum said the fight established Clottey as a major player in the deep and star-studded welterweight division. He'd like to get Clottey back in a major fight as soon as possible. "I'm out trolling the waters," Arum said. "Clottey fits with Shane Mosley, Andre Berto and Paul Williams. And all of those fights would be fascinating fights. I think he would beat Berto. I would make Mosley a favorite and Williams, I'm not sure."

A rematch between welterweight titlist Andre Berto (25-0, 19 KOs) and former titleholder Luis Collazo (29-4, 14 KOs) moved a step closer to reality this week when the WBC ordered negotiations to commence. Berto won a close unanimous decision in a Jan. 17 slugfest that many thought could have gone either way. Collazo hasn't fought since the fight, while Berto defended his title May 30 with an easy decision against Juan Urango. If the Berto and Collazo camps don't make a deal, a purse bid is scheduled for July 17 in Mexico City. Berto promoter Lou DiBella told ESPN.com that HBO told him it's holding a fall date for Berto in order to do the rematch. Of course, that could change if a bigger fight presented itself for Berto, such as one with Shane Mosley

Updates on Cotto, Pacquiao and Pavlik

Friday, June 19, 2009 | Print Entry

While Top Rank promoter Bob Arum spent part of Thursday in Los Angeles trumpeting his July 25 "Latin Fury 10" pay-per-view -- which is headlined by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and will include the Top Rank debut of electrifying interim featherweight titleholder Yuriorkis Gamboa -- he was also at work on two other fronts.

Arum, of course, promotes three of boxing's most significant fighters in pound-for-pound king and junior welterweight champ Manny Pacquiao, welterweight titlist Miguel Cotto, and middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik.

I talked with Arum the other day, and he provided updates on all three of them.

As you should all know by now, if you are even a remote boxing fan, Arum is trying to tidy up a deal for Pacquiao and Cotto to fight Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on HBO PPV.

The deal is moving forward, Arum said.

"I'm negotiating with both camps. It's the usual process," Arum said.

Arum said he has been in regular touch with Cotto's lawyer since Cotto's hard-fought decision win against Joshua Clottey on Saturday at New York's Madison Square Garden, where Pacquiao sat next to Arum and indicated midfight that he wanted Cotto next.

"We have a number of points we are talking through, but nothing that's deal-breaking," Arum said. "Everything looks great."

As for the Pacquiao side, Arum said Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz is flying in from the Philippines to meet with him Sunday in Las Vegas. Arum said he plans to present a deal to Koncz, who will take it back to Pacquiao.

"I'm moving forward in an attempt to have this fight happen," Arum said.

One of the key points -- besides the financial breakdown, of course -- is the weight. Arum said that Cotto is willing to come below 147 pounds and that the contract maximum would wind up at 144 or 145. Stay tuned on that.

There is some minor concern that the brutal cut Cotto suffered over his left eye against Clottey could delay the fight, but Arum said it would be OK. Cotto needed 20 stitches in two cuts but said that the doctor said he should be good to spar around the end of September.

When Arum co-promoted Pacquiao's May 2 victory against Ricky Hatton, the pay-per-view fight was shopped to Showtime before Arum and Golden Boy settled on HBO. In the case of Cotto-Pacquiao, which Arum would control by himself, he said HBO PPV has dibs based on the deal he made with the network to carry Cotto-Clottey.

Arum said part of the discussion with HBO was the production of a "24/7" series for Cotto-Pacquiao. "That would be part of our deal," Arum said.

On the Pavlik front, Arum and the champ have agreed to a contract extension, which appears to have made everyone happy. Contract issues are what forced a planned June 27 fight against Sergio Mora to be called off. Pavlik did have a staph infection in his hand, which was cited as the reason for the cancellation, but it wasn't serious enough to call off the fight. It did, however, provide Top Rank with a good cover story.

Nonetheless, Arum and HBO are now talking about a two- or three-fight deal for Pavlik, which would start in October, with a possible unification fight against Felix Sturm, who would first have to win a July 11 fight in Germany against Khoren Gevor. Top Rank and Universum are in talks.

"I'm waiting to hear from HBO on the money," Arum said, noting that the target date for the fight is Oct. 3 in Atlantic City, N.J.

A second fight on the Top Rank/HBO radar would come in early 2010. The opponents HBO would take -- and fights Arum said he'd like to make -- include middleweight titleholder Arthur Abraham (the fight I want to see) or a move up in weight to face super middleweight titlist Carl Froch. Top Rank and Abraham promoter Sauerland Event have already talked quite a bit about getting to a Pavlik-Abraham showdown. Before a Pavlik fight can materialize, Abraham has a June 27 defense against Mahir Oral and then has a mandatory due against Giovanni Lorenzo, which would take place in the fall.

For all of Arum's plans for Pavlik, he may have an issue with Mora and promoter Jeff Wald of Tournament of Contenders. Their side claims to have a contract for the fight with Pavlik. Don't expect them just to walk away without some considerations.

Never heard this before, anyone else...

Late Wednesday night, a rumor shot through the boxing world that middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik had checked himself into a rehab center for alcohol abuse. As is usually the case, the source of the rumor was the internet, and a story written by Pedro Fernandez at RingTalk.com.
117392.jpg

After reading Fernandez's piece, I made some efforts to substantiate his story and got no hard proof either way, although I did hear quite a bit of rampant speculation. It's been rumored for some time now that Kelly likes a drop or two, and most folks that I talked to seemed to think it was hardly surprising news. But I had no connection to anyone with hard evidence, so I decided not to write a story.

Yesterday, Pavlik's co-manager Cameron Dunkin told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that there is no truth to the rumor. "He's not in rehab. He hasn't been in rehab. It's not true," Dunkin said, adding, "Pedro Fernandez is a scumbag. These guys write it, and everyone on the Internet went with it. They're not journalists. They're not accountable to anyone. Who gives this guy any credibility?" In another article at the Warren Tribune Chronicle, Dunkin explains that he believes the source of the rumor can be traced back to the fact that Pavlik recently visited a sports psychologist to deal with stress issues.

Later on yesterday, Kelly's father, Mike Pavlik, was quoted by the Youngstown Vindicator as saying, "Those are vicious, ugly rumors. … We figured they were so absurd that they didn't need to be addressed. But they're actually gaining momentum now." Pavlik's trainer since childhood, Jack Loew, echoed these sentiments, and mentioned that he'd just seen Pavlik the day before digging a pond at his house.

http://For his part, Pedro Fernandez is sticking to his guns, writing in a comment at Ring Talk that, although he refuses to name names, he is certain that his source for the information has legit confirmation that Pavlik is in rehab. Fernandez goes on to take a stab at Dunkin, writing "he's lucky he ain't in prison after Operation Matchbook!" referring to a 2002 FBI investigation into fixed boxing matches in which Dunkin was named on a warrant to search promoter Bob Arum's office. Dunkin was never charged with any wrongdoing in that case.

Across the internet, comments are popping up from people claiming to be from Pavlik's hometown of Youngstown writing that the fact that Pavlik is in rehab is common knowledge in the city, and that his management and his family are trying to cover up the news now that it has made it on to the internet. The main evidence indicating that something is awry is that in the midst of all of this, Pavlik himself has been nowhere to be found. All it would take is a YouTube vid of Pavlik building that pond in his yard, or a statement to the press from his gym, anything that showed him out and about in the world and not in a rehab clinic. Instead, there's his manager, father and trainer speaking out, but no Pavlik.

If it is a big cover-up, though, then they've done a hell of a job so far. Pavlik may not be Lindsay Lohan, but he's certainly a very big star to some, and in this day and age, keeping news of an athlete's stint in rehab out of the blogdome is not an easy task. On that score, if Pavlik actually is in rehab, his team might as well give up the ruse, because there are no secrets anymore, not for someone who occupies even the faintest glimmer of the spotlight. If the steroids era has taught us anything about public relations, it's that once you're caught, you're best served fessing up unconditionally as soon as possible. Along with a truckload of daily lies, the truth always finds its way onto the web.

Then again, if Pavlik's NOT in rehab, well, we have a nasty little addendum to the recent Raul Ibanez steroids furor, and another exhibit in the growing suspicion out there in the world that blogs - bold, irresponsible, and hellbent on pageviews at the price of all mayhem - are the source of all evil.

I just read that in Rafael's chat and was posting to ask if anyone had heard anything about that. A lot of *#*+ going on with Pavlik...at least he got hispromotional *#*+ out of the way. Hopefully he comes back strong in the ring.

BTW I don't believe it but that's just me.

Is anyone else getting Food Network instead of Versus on the HD channel? I gotta watch this on regular 480 now

ESPN2 didn't start yet think it starts at 10. Versus had two bums fighting before the Diancou/Pascal fight.
