FOOD THREAD VOL. GRUB LIFE

Maryland's seafood industry is in crisis: Nearly half of the Eastern Shore’s crab houses have no workers to pick the meat sold in restaurants and supermarkets.

They failed to get visas for their mostly Mexican workforce, including many women who have been coming north to Maryland for crab season for as long as two decades. The Trump administration for the first time awarded them this year in a lottery, instead of on a first-come, first-served basis.

“This is going to cause the price of crab meat to go out of sight,” said Harry Phillips, owner of Russell Hall Seafood on Hoopers Island. “There’s not going to be hardly any Maryland crab meat.

“It looks like it’s a matter of time before they’re going to shut all of us down.”

I wish there was a program for the homeless and those on welfare to work. Back in NY I see signs saying "will work for food". The neighborhood I'm from (Bronx) there are ton of people on public assistance that stay at home and chill. I'm not saying this is the case for all people on public assistance. I'm just saying those that are able should work. Back in college, majority of the cooks/dishwash crew I worked with were ex-cons (I made pizza in the cafe).

Georgia cut down on illegal immigration a few years ago, running ads about how it wouldn't be tolerated. Illegals left the state and there was a shortage of available workers in the farming industry. These clowns had the audacity to get on urban radio in Atlanta begging for workers to come to south Georgia.

This ended after one season.

Yeah the dumb people who are so anti-illegal immigrants don’t realize how many jobs those people filled. Now that the jobs are open people aren’t even taking them. Where those stupid “they’re taking our jobs” fools at to get those jobs?

$3.25 a pound? That's a good deal.

I've only checked the prices at 99 Ranch and they're super expensive. So I never buy any.

And what's your recipe for your crab stir fry with ginger and scallions? That sound AMAZING.

crabs are just tedious to eat... all that work breaking up a crab for little meat... i rather eat lobster... i get it though your from the dmv so crabs are like part of your culture

Nah, I don't care for eating CRABS. Too much work, not enough prize.

But crab cakes, at the top of my list for sure

my parents are the same way. When folks visit, they always bring them to Asian Pearl lol. There are many other restaurants we could go too but they always want to go to this one. As of late, they been bringing folks that visit us to Jackson Rancheria Casino for their lobster buffet. In fact, we are going tonight cause my folks are visiting from Anaheim Hills:lol:
