It's so stupid that you can't password protect individual folders natively in windows. I want to password protect my "french recipes"folder on my external hard drive (just got the wd passport 250gb...pretty slick) and I cant think of a way to do it other than a zip file which is kind of ahassle. What programs do you guys use or how do you make sure no one gets access to your "french recipes"

No, you can't use a password to protect files and folders in Windows. However, some programs that run on Windows do allow you to protect individual files by using a password. For more information, check the Help for the program you are using.

There are other ways to protect your files and folders in Windows. You can encrypt your files, manually specify who can access the folders or files, or hide them. Choose your method based on how secure the folders or files need to be. Encrypting is the most secure, while hiding the folders is the least secure.

NoteThe ability to encrypt files and folders is not available in Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, and Windows Vista Home Premium.

cant you just download Folder Lock?

I dont even hide my porn...I have the folder right on my desktop, Kleenex on my desk and bottle of jergens next to my mouse..

i knew this thread would be comedy, lovin it. I have a very small external hd which I guess I could hide but I still dont feel comfortable not having thatstuff protected. I fear that if I die suddenly someone will find my recipes and will think less of me (aka family).

Seriously it should be easier to protect the stuff.

DO NOT USE FOLDER LOCK!!

YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING IF YOUR COMP MAKES A REGISTRY CHANGE.

I HAD TO SCRUB MY ENTIRE HD TO FIND MY "HIDDEN" FILES.
