Yeah, sounds like you're using the high contrast mode. That's been available for quite a while now. Like JNSQ said you need to click the moon not the sun.

CRAP, I clicked on the sun just to see what it did and now it won't go back to black.

Damn icons even jumped to the left side of screen on me...they don't do *#** now.
