"Up came the sun and dried up all the rain" is a reference to Jesus' resurrection (up came the Son) and dried up all the rain is referring to when Jesus plauged the the community with a drought, and also Jesus dried the "reign" because he let them know that he had the true power.

that's deep yo.

Dudes on here probably put more thought/ research into these lyrics than the artists actually do. No hate tho, if you like that then do you.

You should call out specific interpretations that you think are reaches instead of rambling. Most of the breakdowns arent even that deep just little wordplay tosses for people to catch
But there is enough "ballin and bottle poppin" for the masses.
I think the problem is most people dont like knowing something went over there head. Especially since most people already dismissed it as flossin or bougee rap

You would have to have some knowledge in Philosophy to catch the Socrates/Plato lines

You would have to have be familiar with Genesis to catch the obvious Noah references.

But like I said you dismiss the obvious wordplay from a guy who wrote a best selling book about how he puts hidden meanings in his lyrics. Cool

Yo that itsy bitsy spider analogy was low key kinda funny tho

Man shut up.

Yall N's can play semantics all you want, in the end lyrics and introspection go hand in hand. You don't get an introspective album by listening to the beat. This album doesn't touch scratch Reasonable Doubt anywhere it matters. No tracks are even up to par or close to D'evils, Can I Live and Coming of Age. The whole last page was filled with dudes on lyric sites and wikipedia reaching to their fullest potential to connect dots so they can post a "
eek.gif
". Dudes can't simply deal with the fact that this album is a mediocre LP with "minimum" double meanings in a few of the tracks.

Maybe Jay will put out another Decoded for the fiends.

I would bet that's it. Dudes are so ready to hate lol. Homie hasn't even read the article to put it into context. Marketing majors love people like him. A simple outlandish sounding headline and they got him by the balls.
Seems you are right, but in this instance, you're the one thats ready to hate. Fall back homie, and perhaps read the post again. I gave the album its due. It's good, perhaps even great one day.
You're right, I havent read the magazine, but by the same token neither have any of you, and I'm sure 90% of the people that have posted in this thread will read it and preach it as truth no matter what the claim is based on. It's also funny that you say they have me by the balls and that they love people like me, when I'm sure I wont be picking up that article at all because any peripheral interest I would have in the article is gone because of the ridiculous hyperbole attached to it.

And how could it be about how the album was released? Didn't realize that exclusivity of a digital release was so unique that it now makes it the most important album in hip hop history.

Realize that no one is trying to shoot the album down. If anything, the way the people on this forum are praising this album, maybe it's time for them to relax a bit, because they are feeding into this nonsense.

IMO, it depends on your definition of lyrical...
It's really hard to compare the two lyrically.

One is full of introspective rhymes about street life.

The other is double & triple entendres that start about the high life and end up being biblical references.

There is literally no comparison that can be made between the two albums...  Reasonable doubt is superior in every single way.
The hyperbole in this thread is getting ridiculous...  Almost everyone I know who has heard this album thinks it is hugely disappointing.

But like dude said how about u point out specific examples where you feel like its full of bs and dudes reaching to the ceiling?

and just cuz somebody is pointing out a double meaning in some lyrics in a song doesnt mean the song itself has to jump from average or mildly tolerable to classic fuggin record....

we gotta accept the fact that its just in some dudes dna to dismiss sumtin right in front of their face just because they aint find it on their own and we can go ahead and accept the fact that some dudes go overboard the decoding

It was obviously a sarcastic remark but that was actually a poorly constructed analogy to describe what people are doing in this thread. We know that Itsy Bitsy was a nursery rhyme written for kids. We don't know who wrote it, but we can assume within reason that it wasn't written to be purposely obtuse or subversive (especially if it's written for kids). The metaphors the poster used are vague, with NO connecting or related words/ideas and not based on facts. That's what we call a "reach".

Jay is a lyricist who's widely known to craft his verses that may contain layered meanings, and he's admitted this publlicly (and even wrote a book about it). The words and phrases used in the bars that posters listed are connecting, related ideas and phrases (which are found in consecutive bars) based on an actual story in the Bible. Given this information and Jay's propenisty to use the language in the manner I described, why are some people clowning on posters for pointing this out?

I just don't understand some of yall N's. If any other rapper came out with these lyrics and people started going as deep as you are a thread would be filled with "stop reaching" and stone faces. dudes preaching like hov, arguably the grimiest %*@%* in the game when it comes to business, cares th that much about socioeconomic issues anymore. there are tons of albums so and mixtapes out that focus on those issues more. I didn't see a thread when legendary weapons came out, or this much focus when friday night lights or either of krits mixtapes came out. but none of those "bang in the whip" right. In the end yall are delusional thinking you bought this album, and are hearing anything with a deeper meaning than ear candy. yall got caught up in the hype with 400,000 other people. Because when you go to to that concert surrounded by white girls screaming the lyrics to *%!+*% in paris or pull up to a red light with with a bunch of frat guys blasting murder to excellence in their suv mercedes, they just donte get out like you do. I'll see some of yall in the carter 4 and drake threads later this year though, so I'm done with this one.

Never knew people would slit their wrists like that over a music album.

No one's saying this is the most complex thing out either (it's a commercial album after all, it's supposed to also appeal to the casual listener too), just enjoying the wordplay. If you don't like the album no one's making you listen to it. Enjoy the music out there.

I'm not understanding how yall are analyzing the lyrics on this album, but at the same time say yall don't like Welcome to the Jungle. Jay went in on that last verse. The Biggie, Pac, Pimp C, and Michael Jackson references were slick in how he intertwined them with references of streets cat and himself. The jungle of entertainment and stardom is no different than cats trying to get rep on the street. One of my favorite songs on the album.
