Los Angeles to raise minimum wage to $15/hour by 2020

:pimp:

Sucks for anybody trying to open a business with lower wage workers
...

But good for the people. :pimp:

So let's say for example in Texas people are being paid more than minimum wage right now, & they decide to raise minimum wage to $15. Would those people's wages increase as well or stay the same?

Cost of living adjustment to keep them just as poor. Don't let the numbers fool you. The truth lies in percentages and ratios.

Why would they stay the same?

My Local Union is asking for $21 raise over 3 years but I doubt and kind of hope we don't get it.

That's what I'm trying to guess at, would other wages increase as well? I guess that's up to the company & yourself. They can just pay you the new minimum wage, but that don't mean you have to accept it & stay there. Only time will tell.

Having minimum wage at $15 is just gonna push big corporations to roll out technology and make things automated at a faster pace

All these McDonald's workers *****ing for $15 an hour are gonna have a hard time keeping their job when McDonald's forces everybody to just order their food off some iPad

Which is the reason I won't use those self order or self checkout machines.

No...

Look at it like a blanket on the floor...

One end is minimum wage and the other is 100k salary...

If you raise the blanket up a few inches, you will still have the far end on the ground.

So, a person making 15 night go to 18.... A person making 18 might go to 20... A person making 21 might go to 22... And a person making 23 will stay the same

It's staggered so it won't have an immediate impact.

I used to think the same way... Logically it makes sense...

But from a business perspective, you might not raise your prices since you have an entire new market of

It all depends on the product

they can raize it, just deport.

deport who?

The $9 to $15 move by 2020 isn't that bad actually. As some have mentioned, tinkering with input prices of 'goods' will push prices of goods and services higher. Again, 'profit' margins are 'squeezed' in this socialistic/keynsian society.

Labor cost is a very big component of business. With technology replacing jobs, many are left behind. Gone are the days of farming, labor and industrial revolutions.

that's a good point - never thought of that.

I'm all for a higher minimum wage but in reality it would be just keeping up with inflation.

On another note. This is a great time to invest in LA Real estate. I predict an increase in LA property value.
YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT TOO.

This is great and all, but it doesn't really address the issue.
This.

A very poignant remark from Councilman Gil Cedillo:

“I would prefer that the cost of this was really burdened by those at the highest income levels."
