Brother pointed this out to me which was actually pretty surprising. On the left Size 12 Air Max 90 Infrared with 3 Air Tunnels or the right The Air Max 90 Vivid Blues Size 12.5 with 4 Air Tunnels. So more Air in larger sizes.

now compare to an '03 or previous pair... your mind will be blown.

Yeah agree, the air units are getting smaller and smaller, just took a look at the Olympic Barkley Force 180's and I could have sworn the OG had a massive air unit, now its just tiny.

Not sure what is so surprising. As sizes get larger the shoe has to get proportionately larger in all aspects.

DownyBoy is right, I have those Vivids in a size 11.5 and they only have the 3 "tunnels" like those infrareds. Look at an OG Air Max (from 1987) and compare to anything recently, or any 90s from '01-'03, and you see a remarkable difference even when comparing shoes that are the same size.

To add, this is not to say that all colorways of the model work the same way. Nike is pretty inconsistent with these types of details. Tak showed some of his 11.5 and 12 Air Max 90s to us elsewhere, and one of his sz. 12 90s from Europe has 3.5 tunnels and his sz 11.5 Escape II 90s had 4.

Well the 180's are different story all together. Nike doesn't own the patent to the 180 air technology anymore, and when they decided to retro them they just used a faux 180 air unit. There is no excuse for the Air Max's though...
