Official 007 "Skyfall" Thread. Out Now!

Salt is different because it was a new movie and the character wasn't established. When Cruise dropped out they changed it up and it worked out well with Jolie in the role. Bond has been around for decades and has always been played by a white guy. We still think of certain iconic characters by their race and gender. Writers aren't going to make Superman Chinese because it would seem off. I'm not saying changing up a character can't work, it just has to be creative and good enough for people to accept it. Characters always get changed around and re-imagined, especially in comic books.
Going to watch that documentary that was posted. Repped.
Thank you. My point exactly. Bond is an icon or mascot of British or male White Anglo - Saxon Protestant imperialism / hegemony / dominance whatever you want to call it. Casting a Black actor to play Bond is, in my mind, similar to casting a White actor to play Shaft.

And will always have the voice of Sean Connery (at least in my mind)

Posted this in the Top Gear thread, but I think it's relevant in here as well!

50 Years of Bond Cars: A Top Gear Special

I think Fassbender would play a better Bond Villain than playing Bond but that's just me

Hyped for this movie

Anyone else think that an critical and oft-overlooked element in a good Bond movie is the villain?

All of the classic Bond films have very memorable villains: Blofeld, Goldfinger, Dr. No. The $h1tty ones, no so much (basically any R. Moore episode. Especially the earlier ones).

Any movie hinges on the villian, see Nolan's Dark Knight films, Star Wars, etc. The audience is supposed to be rooting for the heroes of the films, but it's hard to root for anyone when they are beating up faceless nobodies. When you see an actual, evil, distrubed villian causing havoc, then the hero has someone "worthy" to matchup with. Secretly, everyone wants the villian to kick the crap out of the heroes for 2 hours, and then have the heroe prevail right at the end, in "heroic" fashion.

Great villians will forever drive movies to their true heights, otherwise we all get bored seein the hero hardly break a sweat.

It was also my beef with Brosnan's Bond. The guy was so invincible and perfect that the movies became a bit goofy.

Fair points, CP. I guess it really applies to all movies.

The first Brosnan Bond flick Golden Eye was solid, the others were just meh. The last one especially was bad (the only reason to watch it was Halle Berry)...Brosnan was a boss in Thomas Crown Affair though...

True story. Brosnan makes an excellent T. Crown. He owns that role, through and through.

Problem is that he tries to superimpose Crown on his interpretation of James Bond. Despite their superficial similarities (cars, resources at their disposal, women, adventures, exotic travel) at their core, the two characters are very different.

All I have to say is I have been waiting for this movie ever since I stepped out of the theater from watching Quantum of Solace.
Casino Royale is one of my favorite movies, and according to the reviews this may be even better than that.
I don't care if its better than casino royale or not, because to me that will always be an amazing movie, but I do care that it is going to be a lot better than Quantum because even though it was an entertaining movie...it just didnt have the same :wow: feeling that Casino gave many of us.

I was very skeptical about Craig as bond, but the dude OWNS THE HELL out of the role.

Im pumped!! :pimp:

True story. There's a lot of inner dialogue in the novels that non of the on-screen reincarnations captured, until Craig came along.

Brosnan did another one after Crown, I believe it was After the Sunset or something like that, had Salma and Woody Harrelson in it, he plays a jewel thief, and he was fantastic.

As for Superman bein too tough, kryptonite levels the playing field in terms of him, as well as the right and wrong struggle. Superman II was another way to do it with the whole taking away of his powers, but that shouldn't be used again. Making him evil would be a nice touch, but may piss off the core target audience. Supes can be done right, but has to be really well written otherwise it comes off cheesy. I thought in Superman Returns the scene of Lex Luther stabbing Supes with the Kryptonite and then breaking it off in his ribs was ******g fantastic. :wow: Problem was, the rest of the movie was cheesy as all get out. :smh:

Going to see it on our REAL IMAX screen here in Orlando.

Pumped for this...Daniel Craig is the best Bond, ever, imo.

They need a "heady" bond film like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

it needs to be more about intelligence than action.

I agree..maybe if Nolan was able to get a handle on the script he could blend action and intelligence into a seamless film.

Fantastic film... I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Won't say too much, as I guess you guys in the States don't get it till next week... but Naomie and Bérénice were both
