Former Stanford assistant Greg Roman has joined the 49ers as their offensive coordinator, according to a source.

Roman served as Stanford's associate head coach and was as responsible as anyone -- including head coach Jim Harbaugh -- for the Cardinal's offensive success and creativity.

Roman has extensive NFL experience, having been an assistant for Carolina, Houston and Baltimore.

He was a finalist for the Stanford head coaching position that went to David Shaw.
