Official 2012 San Francisco 49ers Offseason Thread

I like that, there's continuity with these coordinators, we probably could have done better than Fangio but since he's familiar with everything I think he'll do alright.

Tim Drevno has also agreed to join the 49ers' staff, the source said. Drevno served as Stanford's tight ends coach in 2007 and '08. Last year, he coached the team's offensive line. A 1992 graduate of Cal State Fullerton, Drevno has no NFL coaching experience. But Drevno was offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at University of San Diego from 2003 to 2006. Harbaugh was head coach there from 2004 to '06.

Drevno's exact title with the 49ers is not known. Mike Solari is expected to return as 49ers offensive line coach, so Drevno might assist Solari with those duties, as well as work with the team's tight ends.

UPDATE: Harbaugh has also hired Ed Donatell, a 20-year NFL coaching veteran, to coach the 49ers' secondary, the Chronicle's David White reports. Vance Joseph coached the 49ers' defensive backs last season after Johnnie Lynn, with whom he shared the duties, abruptly left the team late in the season. Donatell worked seven years as an NFL defensive coordinator with Atlanta (2004-06) and Green Bay (2000-03). Most recently, he was DBs coach with the Denver Broncos. He has coached 10 different players who have earned a total of 15 Pro Bowl selections during his career.

can ed donatell bring along Champ Bailey?

Q: What level of interest in Alex Smith do you expect throughout the league during free agency? @vincentrm
Matt Maiocco: Smith will not return to the 49ers. (That decision is equal parts his and the 49ers.) He was the league's 21st-rated passer. His statistics have gradually improved every season he has seen significant action in the NFL. He'll turn 27 before next season, so he still has some years ahead of him. Smith will have multiple options in 2011 -- and he might even get a chance somewhere to compete for a starting job.

What does Fangio bring? Lots of experience at the college and NFL level, familiarity with Harbaugh and a background in the 3-4 defense.

Fangio worked under Dom Capers in Carolina and Houston. In between, he served under the elder Jim Mora with Indianapolis.

The elder Mora's refusal to fire Fangio precipitated his own firing from the Colts.

The situation was unfortunate for all involved. Mora and Fangio wanted veteran players to run a relatively complicated defense, but the Colts were funneling their resources toward the offensive side as they built around Peyton Manning. Colts management thought the team needed to change its defensive approach -- and its coordinator -- to accommodate personnel shortcomings on that side of the ball.

Fangio was out. His time with the Texans also ended poorly.

Under Fangio, the Colts posted respective rankings of 15th, 21st and 29th in yards allowed. The Texans were 16th, 31st, 23rd and 31st with Fangio.

Neither team had strong defensive talent. The Texans were an expansion franchise.

Fangio spent the 2006 through 2008 seasons in Baltimore as special assistant to the head coach amid some thought that he might succeed Rex Ryan as coordinator. Fangio coached the Ravens' linebackers in 2009, drawing praise from Brendon Ayanbadejo, before joining Harbaugh at Stanford last season.
If we can somehow mimic what the Packers are doing on defense, its a good hire.

From what it looks like Fangio hasn't had much to work with - 2 expansion teams and the Colts. We don't have much depth on defense and they're big holes in secondary and outside LB positions, so Fangio still has his work cut out for him. Having PWillis and Justin Smith on defense helps out alot though.
