TALK N TEXT SIZZLES IN BIG WIN OVER GIANTS
Carey leads 6 Pals in double figures

Wednesday, 04 October 2006

It wasn't the kind of ending that Talk N Text hoped for but it ended up with the win just the same.

The Phone Pals weathered a searing comeback by Purefoods Chunkee in the second half and held on to a 108-99 win Wednesday night in the 2006-07 Talk N Text Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Talk N Text nearly squandered a 23-point lead early in the third period as reigning Most Valuable Player James Yap caught fire late in that stage. But the Purefoods hotshots efforts went for naught as the Pals hit timely baskets to book their first win in the tournament.

Harvey Carey led all scorers with 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field. Anthony Washington added 18 markers, 13 boards and 5 assists for TNT in his finest game yet after an injury-plagued rookie season last year.

"We really came out strong tonight but our rhythm got off in the third quarter because our big men went into foul trouble," said Phone Pals head coach Derrick Pumaren, who also drew 17 points from Renren Ritualo.

"When we were up by 20 points in the first half, I told the boys that Purefoods is the defending champion, they just won't roll over and die. And true enough, they were able to make a comeback," Pumaren added.

Asi Taulava chipped in 13 points and 11 rebounds for Talk n Text but was hardly a factor in the second half along with Don Allado because of foul trouble.

The Pals appeared set on tearing Purefoods apart when they erected a 53-30 lead before Paul Artadi provided the spark off the bench and teamed up with Yap in a scorching run that got the Giants to within five, before yielding a bit and moving into the final canto down by seven, 62-69.

And with Taulava and Allado sitting on the bench, the Giants kept closing in. Peter June Simon and Jun Limpot joined the scoring spree and Purefoods threatened once again at 83-90 with 3:50 remaining.

Ritualo banged in a triple to make it a 93-83 but Simon and Limpot were not done yet as they connived for a 9-4 run to reduce the lead to 92-97, 1:34 left in the game.

Purefoods had a chance to move closer but Yap lost the handle on the ball while maneuvering inside, resulting in a breakaway layup by Carey that sealed the win for the Pals.

"I'm happy for this win because the players stayed together," said Pumaren. "I think we're a team now unlike in the previous conference, nagkakapaan pa. Ngayon, nagkakaamuyan na sila."

Yap paced the Giants with 20 points while Simon added 17, 14 coming in the final period. Kerby Raymundo also had 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

The Phone Pals, who finished second to last in the 2005-06 Philippine Cup, also got 11 points and 11 assists from Jimmy Alapag.

With Alapag at the helm, they broke away in the second period behind the inside incursions of Mark Cardona and Carey, who already had 17 and 10 points, respectively, in the first half.

From a slim 20-19 lead after the first period, Talk N Text outscored the Giants, 30-11, in the second quarter capped by a two-hand slam from Washington for a 50-30 cushion at halftime. (JO)

The Scores:

Talk N Text 108 Carey 25, Washington 18, Ritualo 17, Taulava 13, Cardona 12, Alapag 11, Andaya 5, Belano 3, Allado 2, Pablo 2, Fran 0.

WILLIAMSSANTOS DUEL HIGHLIGHT SLAM-BANG FRIDAY
Red Bull seeks solo lead vs SMB

Thursday, 05 October 2006

Rookies take centerstage as the years top two picks find themselves on opposite ends of the floor Friday.

All eyes will be on Kelly Williams and Arwind Santos the first two picks and two of the most talented and celebrated players to barge into the league in recent memory as they make their professional debut when Sta. Lucia tangles with Air21 in the 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Jaded observers contend Williams, a multi-dimensional cager who can play four positions, represents the future of the Sta. Lucia Realtors, who made the athletic Oakland U Detroit product the top pick of the 2006 Rookie Draft.

"Now I have a team," said a visibly thrilled Buddy Encarnado, the Realtors' team manager and representative to the Board, shortly after Sta. Lucia officially tabbed Williams.

Aside from Williams, Sta. Lucia also signed up sixth overall selection Mark Isip and rookie free agent guard Ronnie Bughao.

Self-proclaimed experts contend that Sta. Lucia's latest acquisitions plus the experience of Marlou Aquino, Kenneth Duremdes and Dennis Espino should make the Realtors a potent force this season.

But for now Williams will have to prove that he could handle the challenge in the big league.

The 4:35 p.m. encounter promises to be exciting with lots of slam-bang action from reigning slam dunk king Nino Canaleta, No. 2 rookie pick Arwind Santos and Williams.

For his part, Santos will also have to display the talent and oomph that made Air21 coach Bo Perasol exclaim, Picking Arwind is like picking the No. 1 overall pick.

The former Far Eastern U King Tamaraw is expected to make an immediate impact on the Express with his brand of ball a perfect fit to Air21s run-and-gun style of play.

But not to be overshadowed is the 7:20 p.m. match between the San Miguel Beermen and the Red Bull Barakos, considered two of the pre-tourney favorites.

Red Bull will be eyeing solo leadership with a second win in as many assignments. A week ago, the Barakos still looked every inch a title contender in their 99-93 victory over the Alaska Aces in Guam.

Free agent Carlo Sharma was signed by Red Bull Thursday in an effort to add muscle to its frontline and match up with the tall Beermen, who dealt them their only loss in the Pre-Season Tournament. Sharma took the spot of Mike Hrabak, who was placed on the unrestricted free agents list.

The Red Bull-SMB tiff should be an interesting match-up with the Beermen playing their first regular season game under new chief strategist Chot Reyes

WELCOAT NOTCHES FIRST WIN IN THE PROS
League's youngest player leads Dragons in win over Coke

Sunday, 08 October 2006

Contrary to expectations, the Welcoat Dragons earned their first win in the Philippine Basketball Association sooner than later.

Led by rookie Jay-R Reyes inspiring performance, the expansion ballclub humbled the Coca-Cola Tigers, 85-75, Sunday night in the Talk N Text-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The result was truly surprising even for Leo Austria, the Dragons head coach, who admitted he never expected to win but I told the players if we should win, this is it.

Austria was so jubilant about the victory that he told sportswriters in jest: pwede na uli akong matalo ng tatlong dikit.

Kidding aside, the Welcoat tactician said earning their first win at this stage of the conference provides his young team the needed confidence boost for the tougher games ahead.

This (win) is truly very important for us because now they (Dragons) know how to win, said Austria, whose last post-game interview in the PBA was after helping Shell win the third-place trophy in the 2005 Fiesta Conference prior to the teams disbandment.

Welcoat appeared down and out four minutes into the game when the Tigers opened the game with a 12-0 run.

But the Dragons stayed patient, and slowly clawed back behind a solid teamwork and aggressive defense that saw them contesting every shot the Tigers make.

We just agreed among ourselves not to let Coke play their transition game which was why they had a good start, Austria said, referring to what he told his boys when the Tigers started the game strong.

The Dragons seized control late in the third by closing the period with a 12-2 run for a 63-54 lead going into the last 12 minutes of play.

Reyes, 22, the youngest player in the league today who held his own against Cokes veteran big men, turned in 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds and had two blocks to show the way for the Dragons, who held the Tigers to a 29 percent shooting in the third.

Denver Lopez and Jojo Tangkay combined for 24 points all in the second half as Welcoat kept Coca-Colas rallies at bay. Rob Wainwright also had a huge game, finishing with10 points and 11 rebounds against his former team.

Trading its big men Rafi Reavis, Billy Mamaril and Rudy Hatfield to Barangay Ginebra during the offseason turned out to be costly for the Tigers, who felt their absence badly in the middle quarters when Ali Peek went into foul trouble and had to take a seat. The Tigers lone remaining big man finished with only eight points as a result.

That turned out to be the break the Dragons needed and they capitalized on it.

John Arigo scored 24 points and Allan Salangsang added 12 to lead the Tigers, who shot just 33 percent from the field and turned the ball over 21 times, resulting in their second defeat in as many games.

Since entering the league in 2002, it was the first time for Coca-Cola -- 99-84 loser to Alaska last Wednesday -- to start a conference with back-to-back defeats.

A short jumper by Denok Miranda pulled the Tigers within 67-70 with 7:22 remaining, but Lopez sank two free throws, Tangkay completed a three-point play and Wainwright scored on a putback as the Dragons stretch the lead back to 10 points and was never threatened again.

The scores:

Welcoat 85 Reyes 16, Lopez 13, Tangkay 11, Wainwright 10, Baguion 9, Cabatu 9, Sta. Maria 8, Gelig 7, Lao 2, Ibanes 0, Mente 0.

Coca-Cola 75 Arigo 24, Salangsang 12, Yeo 10, Ferreria 10, Peek 8, Raneses 4, Miranda 4, Antonio 3, Enrile 0, Caceres 0.

Quarterscores: 18-16, 37-36, 63-54, 85-75.

ASI POWERS TALK N TEXT PAST ALASKA
Phone Pals grab share of lead

Sunday, 08 October 2006

Coach Derrick Pumaren and his Talk N Text Phone Pals hardly took a rest during the off-season and theyre now harvesting the fruits of their hard labor.

"We didnt work hard for three months just to win only our first game in the season. Were determined to get this one and continue working hard to get better," said Pumaren as his Phone Pals made it two in a row in the 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup with a 97-93 decision over the Alaska Aces at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.

Asi Taulava, Renren Ritualo and Donbel Belano fired crucial baskets down the stretch as the Pals held off the Aces to gain a share of the early lead with Red Bull and Barangay Ginebra.

Alaska suffered a second loss in three starts.

Taulava scored a game-high 25 points, including a buzzer-beater in the closing seconds, Ritualo went scoreless in the first half but made three important points in the last 35 seconds while Belano played steady off the bench, rattling in 12 points, including two free throws that iced their win.

The Pals erected a 10-point lead early in the fourth but nearly lost that margin in the face of the Aces searing charge at the finish.

"Our character is being tested so early in the season. Were not panicking and I believe its a good sign for us," said Pumaren.

"Its helping the team. Id rather have these tough games now because these are pushing the team to work harder. The other teams would also get better later on," Pumaren added.

With the Aces already breathing down their necks, Taulava gave the Pals some breather on a buzzer-beating 15-footer, making it 94-90 for TNT with time down to 46 seconds.

Mike Cortez sandwiched a twinner by Ritualo with a quick short jumper and a trey in the ensuing plays as Alaska came within one at 93-94 with 13 seconds left
in the game.

The Aces then immediately sent Ritualo to the stripe, hoping the pressure would get to the former DLSU top gun. The ploy almost worked for the Aces as Ritualo missed his second free throw. Unfortunately, Alaska failed to control the leather with Belano grabbing the looseball and completing the Pals escape act.

Belano, also quickly fouled by the Aces, canned two charities for the final count.

"Asis shot was practically a killer-basket," said Pumaren on Taulavas crucial buzzer-beater.

The two teams figured in a fierce match marked by six deadlocks and five lead changes.

Taulava, Harvey Carey, Mark Cardona, Jimmy Alapag, Belano and Ritualo all scored at least 10 points for Talk N Text while Cortez, Jeffrey Cariaso, Joachim Thoss and Willie Miller all scattered 13 or more for Alaska.

TNTs reserve crew came out strong in the second period, and the Pals took a 48-40 lead at halftime.

Belano and Cardona scored 13 points together coming off the bench although Carey gave the Pals the biggest boost early on, completing a double-double job with 12 points and 10 rebounds right in the opening half.

The Pals also got decisive edge in three-point shooting in the first 24 minutes of play with Alapag and Belano combining for five treys against none for the Aces.

Alaska was 0-of-6 from beyond the arc in the first half.

The scores:

Talk N Text 97 Taulava 25, Carey 14, Cardona 12, Alapag 12, Belano 12, Ritualo 10, Washington 6, Allado 4, Pablo 2, Andaya 0.

Alaska 93 Cortez 24, Cariaso 21, Thoss 15, Miller 13, Belasco 7, de la Cruz 5, Ferriols 4, Laure 2, Jiunio 2.

Quarters: 25-24, 48-40, 74-70, 97-93.

GINEBRA GOES FOR NO.3 AND SOLO LEAD
SLR eyes followup win vs SMB

Tuesday, 10 October 2006

Barangay Ginebra shoots for a third straight victory and solo leadership when it tangles with Air21 Wednesday as the teams start to settle down in the 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup.

Gametime is 7:20 p.m. with the Kings hoping to wiggle out of a three-way logjam at the top along with idle Red Bull and Talk N Text.

So far, the star-studded Ginebra crew has been performing to expectations. The ballclub completely dominated its first two games, winning by an average margin of 26 points.

The Kings opened their season with 102-69 demolition of expansion ballclub Welcoat Dragons, then pounced on defending champion Purefoods Chunkee Giants, 86-67, last Saturday.

Ginebra coach Jong Uichico said besides the victories, he is more satisfied "with the players' conscious effort to play defense."

In the Express, the Kings will be facing a team that also likes to run and gun. Led by Ranidel de Ocampo, Nino Canaleta and No. 2 overall draft pick Arwind Santos, Air21 seeks to make up for its disappointing season debut, an 88-96 loss to Sta. Lucia, with a stunning win over the league leaders.

And speaking of the Realtors, all eyes will again be on top overall pick Kelly Williams when he troops back to the floor in the Sta. Lucia San Miguel duel at 4:35 p.m.

Williams made his much awaited debut in the PBA Friday and did not disappoint. He tallied 11 points and cornered 14 rebounds to help SLR get off to a good start, despite not figuring in pre-season favorite rankings.

"It's nice to get the first win especially after seeing the rankings. They way they put us at definitely puts a fire in all the players' heart," said the Fil-Am forward, who highlighted his 38-minute job with an alley-oop dunk over reigning slam dunk king Canaleta late in the second quarter.

Sta. Lucia coach Alfrancis Chua said he understands why his team was ranked among the also-ran. But he vowed to prove them wrong.

Over the past few seasons, the Realtors often struggled and missed the playoffs mainly because their bench wasn't deep enough to matchup with the league's elite.

But the arrival of Williams, an athletic, hardworking forward, and fellow rookies Mark Isip, Mark Magsumbol and Ronnie Bughao, has transformed Sta. Lucia into a potent contender.

"Everybody knows who the strong teams are. We're not even mentioned and we understand that and that's a challenge for us," said Chua, swearing "I'm not gonna stop pushing these (Realtors) guys."

The Beermen opened their campaign in the 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup with a close 79-84 loss to the Red Bull Barakos also last Friday. Obviously the Beermen are itching to bounce back so the Realtors should be ready for a tough encounter.

Anticipating a tough battle, the Realtors Tuesday reactivated Norman Gonzales for some muscle.

It's also interesting to see if Williams will be a dominating force. The Fil-Am rookie is a protegee and player of Reyes in the RP Team so the SMB coach knows the weak and strong points of the Sta. Lucia freshman.

Jarencio joins SMB coaching staff

FOR UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas Tigers coach Pido Jarencio, when it rains it pours.

A little over a week after his Espaa-based Growling Tigers clinched the UAAP championship against the highly favored Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, the rookie bench tactician was appointed as an assistant coach of San Miguel Beer in the Philippine Basketball Association.

Inuulan yata ako ng swerte (Im still in luck), said the 42-year-old Jarencio, who himself was a standout as a UST Glowing Goldie from 1981 to 1984, even though his school failed to win a title then.

Iba yata talaga pag marami ang nagdadasal para sa ginagawa mo (I think this is because many prayed for me for what we have accomplished).

Jarencio is no stranger to the Beermen, having spent some of his memorable playing days in the pro league with the team under coach Norman Black, who ironically was the mentor of the Ateneo team that Jarencios boys beat in the UAAP finals.

In yet another ironic twist, a true-blue Atenean, Chot Reyes, now heads SMBs coaching staff. Nevertheless, Reyes welcomed Jarencios addition to the Beermens coaching staff.

By beating Ateneo, Pido has earned my respect, said Reyes. He showed his talent in planning each game, making adjustments and motivating his players.

Reyes had mentored Jarencio at Pop Cola, Pidos last PBA team.

Jarencio will be reunited with SMB team manager Samboy Lim, who was once his teammate at Northern Consolidated Cement-RP team and the Lagerlite-Magnolia ball clubs of the PABL (now PBL).

ESCAPE ACT OVER AIR21 SHOVES GINEBRA ON TOP
Menk, Caguioa lead Kings to scary win their 3rd in a row

Wednesday, 11 October 2006
Aris Dimaunahan has an axe to grind against Barangay Ginebra but wasnt able to use it when the opportunity presented itself.

Dimaunahan failed to complete what could have been a game-tying four-point play in the closing seconds, allowing his former team to escape with a 114-113 squeaker over Air21 in the 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.

Though pushed to the limit for the first time in the season, Ginebra coach Jong Uichico expressed satisfaction on how his boys handled the situation and said they gained something to ponder on.

"Maganda na rin mayroon kaming food for thought na iuuwi ngayon," said Uichico, whose powerhouse team had relatively easy time disposing of the Welcoat Dragons and the Purefoods Chunkee Giants in their first two games.

The Kings, setting out in the season the outstanding favorite following a massive buildup during the break, walloped the Dragons and the Giants by an average winning margin of 26 points.

Ginebra actually dominated Air21 early on but flirted with disaster at endgame.

"They almost won the game. We missed crucial shots but made big stops in the end except the big three-pointer we yielded to Aris Dimaunahan," said Uichico.

The Kings were already putting the wraps on the game when Dimaunahan converted a trey with a foul to boot from Sunday Salvacion with 3.8 seconds left to play.

Alas, the former Ginebra second-string guard muffed the charity that could have forced extra play.

Ronald Tubid won the looseball battle but also missed a short fade-away jumper, triggering a frenzied celebration by the Ginebra bench and its huge throng at the buzzer.

Eric Menk, Mark Caguioa, Jayjay Helterbrand, Rudy Hatfield and Salvacion produced significant numbers as the Kings nailed their third straight win for the solo lead in the tourney.

Menk had 27 points and six rebounds, Caguioa 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Heterbrand 19 points and nine assists, Hatfield 12 points and 10 rebounds and Salvacion 11 points and four rebounds.

Rookie Arwind Santos had sterling showing that again went for naught for Air21 on a second loss in as many games. The former FEU standout logged a double-double game with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Ranidel de Ocampo, Wynne Arboleda and Gary David also played well as Air21 put up a tough resistance despite the injuries suffered by Nino Canaleta, Homer Se and Mark Telan.

Canaleta was rushed to a nearby hospital at halftime due to a dislocated nose bridge.

Arboleda and David starred in a searing 17-3 run that had the Express surging ahead at 103-102 entering the last three minutes of play.

The two teams fought tooth and nail up to the finish.

The scores:

Ginebra 114 Menk 27, Caguioa 24, Helterbrand 19, Hatfield 12, Salvacion 11, Adducul 5, Reavis 5, Mamaril 4, Abarrientos 4, Macapagal 3,

Air21 113 Santos 24, De Ocampo R. 19, Telan 12, Dimaunahan 11, Arboleda 11, David 10, De Ocampo Y. 10, Tubid 8, Canaleta 6, Se 2, Sotto 0.

Quarterscores: 35-27, 62-52, 92-81, 114-113

TNT OFFENSIVE JUGGERNAUT RIPS WELCOAT
No Friday the 13th jinx for Phone Pals

Friday, 13 October 2006

Coach Derick Pumaren isn't exactly a superstitious guy. But the thought of playing on a Friday the 13th brings him some chills.

Well, even the Talk N Text Phone Pals went through some scary moments in the fourth quarter before completing their 115-99 demolition job of the Welcoat Dragons Friday night at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Harvey Carey hit all but one of his 12 shots and finished with 22 points to show the way for the mighty Phone Pals, who picked up their third consecutive victory to keep the Barangay Ginebra Kings company on top of the leaderboard in the PBA-Talk N Text Philippine Cup.

"It's scary to play inferior teams like Welcoat especially on days like these ... Friday the 13th. Baka madisgrasya," Pumaren said. "But the good thing is we finished strong."

Ren-Ren Ritualo scored 20 points despite a 6-of-13 shooting and Anthony Washington turned in a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, eight of them coming off the defensive boards to help rev up TNT's up-tempo offense that produced 24 fastbreak points.

The game appeared to be a walk in the park for the Phone Pals who went to business early and ripped the game apart after just 24 minutes.

After Denver Lopez and Rob Wainwright hit successive baskets to bring Welcoat within 21-25 with 2:10 left in the opening quarter, the Phone Pals starring Carey, Ritualo, Don Allado, Mark Cardona and Jimmy Alapag responded with a 35-17 blast that propelled TNT to what looked like a comfortable 60-38 advantage at halftime.

Apparently, the huge margin gave the Phone Pals an impression that the Dragons were down and out, prompting them to celebrate prematurely.

And they nearly paid for it.

Playing with nothing to lose, the upset conscious Dragons kept their focus and patiently waited for an opportunity to strike. Then Lopez started hitting his shots from the downtown and Welcoat found itself back into the game in no time.

"We relaxed in the third quarter. We gave back their confidence," explained Pumaren of their second half meltdown.

"Instead of making stops, we tried to make baskets added the TNT head coach.

A three-pointer by Lopez and a basket by Nino Gelig pulled the Dragons within 76-86 with still 9:27 to play.

They were still within striking distance when Asi Taulava, who had 16 points, and Alapag conspired in an 11-7 run as the Phone Pals stretched the lead to 108-90 and kept the rallying Dragons at bay.

The 115 was the highest output so far in the conference by any team.

The loss was Welcoats second in three games, denying the new PBA franchise what could have been their first back-to-back wins in the pros after an 85-75 upset of Coca-Cola last Sunday.

Lopez tallied a career-high 21 points and Wainwright added 18 for the Dragons, who committed 19 turnovers, seven more than the Phone Pals. (DBC)

The scores:

Talk N Text 115 Carey 22, Ritualo 20, Washington 18, Taulava 16, Allado 12, Cardona 8, Alapag 7, Belano 7, Fran 3, Pablo 2, Andaya 0.

Welcoat 99 Lopez 21, Wainwright 18, Reyes 15, Cabatu 13, Gelig 10, Tangkay 10, Sta. Maria 4, Lao 4, Ibanes 2, Baguion 2, Mente 0.

Quarterscores: 33-26, 60-38, 84-66, 115-99.

TNT TARGET: 4 IN A ROW
Giants face Tigers

Tuesday, 17 October 2006

The standings may not show it, but Talk N Text coach Derrick Pumaren anticipates a tough challenge as the Phone Pals aim for win No.4 Wednesday.

The unbeaten Phone Pals test the mettle of the depleted Air 21 Express, who are seeking a breakthrough win in the 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup.

Pumaren considers the Express as dangerous opponents and the bad habit exhibited by his troops in their last game somehow worries him. He is keeping his fingers crossed the team has learned its lessons well.

The Phone Pals are coming off a 115-99 victory over expansion team Welcoat last Friday but had to scramble in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

"We could have won easily had we stayed aggressive. But we relaxed in the third quarter. Instead of making stops, we tried making baskets," Pumaren observed.

"This team (Air 21) never gives up. They're very aggressive on defense and their offense can turn things around so we have to stay focused. We can't let our guards down," said Pumaren of their scheduled 7:20 p.m. date with the Express at the Araneta Coliseum.

Talk N Text's rejuvenated frontcourt led by Asi Taulava and Harvey Carey pose the biggest problem for the Express (0-3), who are without injured forwards Nino Canaleta and Homer Se.

Canaleta, the reigning slam dunk king, went under the knife to repair his fractured nose that was accidentally elbowed by teammate Ronald Tubid during their 113-114 loss to Barangay Ginebra a week ago. Se remains a doubtful starter with a sprained foot.

Defending champion Purefoods Chunkee Giants and the Coca-Cola Tigers, in the meantime, try to build on the momentum of their initial success when they face off in the first game at 4:35 p.m.

The Tigers, who started the season with back-to-back defeats, notched their first win last Friday at the expense of the Red Bull Barakos, 105-86.

In contrast, the defending champion Giants blew a 29-point lead and barely escaped with a 103-101 decision over the Express last Saturday to likewise snap a two-game skid.

"We're still far from the form that we want to be," Purefoods Chunkee coach Ryan Gregorio admits.

While he agrees it was an ugly win, Gregorio said he's still pleased with the way his troops performed.

"We showed some resiliency out there. Hopefully we could build on this and slowly find our way up the ladder," the 2005-06 Coach of the Year said. (DBC)

AIR21 PULLS RUG FROM UNDER TNT
De Ocampo, David turn in career-highs

Wednesday, 18 October 2006
Air21 Express coach Bo Perasol complained about his teams tendency to celebrate a good effort even in defeat.

The Express responded with a good effort in victory in the 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup.

I told the boys that we should feel the pain of the losses, Perasol said. Minsan kasi masaya pa rin kami kahit na talo basta maganda ang naging performance namin.

They have all the reasons to celebrate Wednesday night after bringing down the previously undefeated Talk N Text Phone Pals, 127-110, at the Araneta Coliseum.

It was the first win of the Express in four games and the first loss of the Phone Pals also in four starts.

Ranidel de Ocampo and Gary David finished with career-highs 33 and 30 points, respectively, while combining for 24 in a murderous fourth quarter.

De Ocampo had 15 points in the fourth, highlighting it with a slam late in the game.

The Express took full control in the fourth period behind the hot hands of David and the generous hands of Wynne Arboleda.

David scored seven and matched his previous high of 28 points in a 9-2 Express run at the start of the fourth period, giving his team a 100-88 lead.
Arboleda, on the other hand, issued five of his career-best 18 assists during their breakaway.

It was also during the decisive tear when Homer Se of the Express and Anthony Washington of the Phone Pals were ejected after getting called for fighting fouls.

The Big Dome resembled a playground in the first half with both teams hitting 60 points.

That was our game. If we want to prove that we can contend in this tournament we have to find a way to force the other team to play our game, Perasol said.

SMB LANDS ADDUCUL, TUGADE, RODRIGUEZ IN 3-TEAM SWAP
Red Bull gets 2 big men, 3 draft picks in blockbuster deal

Thursday, 19 October 2006

After three jolting defeats, San Miguel coach Chot Reyes figures his bench needs some fixing. So the Beermen wasted no time in getting into a three-team trade that netted the ballclub the biggest catch of the young season.

SMB's unexpected revamp brought the most sought after center Romel Adducul and deadshot forward Lordy Tugade to the struggling franchise following well-kept negotiations involving Red Bull and Barangay Ginebra.

Players assignment forms submitted by the teams to the Commissioner's Office Thursday morning for approval indicated that San Miguel acquired Tugade and reserve center Omanzie Rodriguez from the Barakos in exchange for the Beermens first and second round draft picks in the 2009 PBA Draft plus reserve guard Paolo Hubalde.

After giving up Tugade, Red Bull dealt its first round draft rights for 2008 and Hubalde to Ginebra in exchange for Adducul, who was then immediately shipped to the Beermen for Migs Noble, sophomore Michael Kong and SMB's 2008 second round draft rights.

The acquisition of the Adducul and Tugade should provide depth to the Beermen who have been playing without key players Danny Seigle and and Danny Ildefonso and hopefully swing their fortunes around in the 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup.

Adducul said he is excited to be reunited with Reyes and his teammates on the national team.

"Siyempre mami-miss ko ang mga teammates ko sa Ginebra," he said. "Pero parang home away from home sa akin ang San Miguel dahil nakasama ko sa national team ang marami sa kanila."

Adducul makes his debut in an SMB uniform Friday night as the Beermen battle the Alaska Aces at 7:20 p.m. at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. Tugade may miss a couple more games with a hurting knee.

"This is a win-win situation for both parties. The trade will also provide Lordy more playing minutes," said Tony Chua, Red Bull's team manager and the league's vice-chairman.

The acquisition of Noble and Kong should shore up Red Bull's frontline manned only by Enrico Villanueva, Mick Pennisi and Carlo Sharma. (DBC)
