Guess he's following in the footsteps of former Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, who is currently under criminal investigation after the Interior Dept Inspector General issued a criminal referral.
Initial reports stated the criminal referral had to do with alleged false statements Zinke made to investigators but a grand jury was later empaneled.
The criminal investigation has since been expanded to include a land deal with the chairman of Haliburton, alleged obstruction of a casino project in Connecticut after a rival lobbied Zinke, and lastly Zinke's use of private email for official government business.
Prior to Zinke stepping down right before Democrats took control of the House, the Inspector General had finished some aspects of the multiple investigations involving Zinke's conduct. As is par for the course for Trump cabinet officials, the IG report found that Zinke devised a scheme to arrange unauthorized government travel for his wife without reimbursement. Shortly before the release of that report, there was a botched attempt to remove the Inspector General while at least 3 investigations involving Zinke's conduct were pending.

Documents obtained by the Guardian suggest interior secretary is promoting effort tied to his former firm
The US interior secretary, David Bernhardt, is promoting a fossil fuel project for which his former employer, a lobbying firm, is a paid advocate, e-mails obtained by the Guardian suggest.
Experts say Bernhardt is probably violating ethics guidelines issued by the Trump administration with the stated goal of “draining the swamp”. Based on these rules, Bernhardt should be recused from specific issues involving a former client for at least two years.
