Phil Knight Going In To Basketball Hall of Fame - Deserved?

YES.

This guy helped reinvent the game with his endorsing of future stars in the late 80's and 90's.

you can hate nike all you want but their commercials, ads, and popularity helped the NBA's popularity in what we refer to as the golden age of the nba after magic and bird....

if yao can go and he had a short lived career how can nike not go... i mean there impact maybe one of the biggest parts of bball period...

What Nike did with MJ? LOL. That was all because of MJ. Nike rode his coattails. Get real. Phil Knight wouldn't have ever been relevant without Michael Jordan.

If he can go, then people shouldn't +$!%* bout the Ginobili's and Yao's of the world making it

bingo.
People are acting like NIKE gave these athletes their talent. It was the actual athletes contributions/talent to the game of basketball which HELPED Nike be able to endorse them properly.

but as someone stated above, Yao is in the HoF so it's actually hard to take the Basketball Hall of Fame serious anyway.

Michael Jordan put Nike Basketball on the map, not vice versa.

So, you think the same exact things would have happened if Jordan signed with Converse or Adidas?  Nike's shoe designs and marketing had nothing to do with how popular "Air Jordan" became?  Obviously, Nike wouldn't have blown up in the same way if it wasn't for Jordan, but I think it was more of a two way street than you're making it out to be.

you do know i think up to the jordan 13 micheal created and made the designs...so and yes no matter who mj signed with they wouldve been big the whole hype of nikes started with jordan and folks wanting to be like mike.. then it transcended to other players then to hypebeast and ppl buying them cause of limited and everyone else getting them....

that all being said nike impact is probably the biggest in nba... it was times ppl watched bball just to see there commercials and what new shoes certain players would be wearing

For what the Basketball Hall of Fame encompasses, absolutely he deserves to be inducted.

As for riding the coat tails of the athletes, that's how you MARKET your product. You could say the same thing for ANY product that has a famous person endorsing it. The athletes didn't design the shoe, they didn't make the shoe, they weren't the ones coming up with new shoe technology. They were the ones promoting it. The success of Nike is due to its forward-thinking designs and innovation, coupled with incomparable marketing.

He does, just for the technological advances Nike has done for Basketball.

Y'all are forgetting what he has done for the Oregon Ducks as well.

What does any of this have to do with basketball? Is anyone from Spalding in the HOF? Why not? They make the balls! How about Gatorade? They fuel these athletes! Be Like Mike! That surely contributed to basketball.

what exactly does that have to do with "Pro" Basketball?
Just throw the CEO's of Reebok, Adidas, Converse, etc. in there as well.

He's only going in as a "contributer"

, not as a player or coach. Its the basketball HOF not the NBA HOF. Nike has done a lot to help build the basketball brand and expand the game's reach around the world. (excluding the sweatshops of course)

Um, no he didn't. You need to do your research before making these comments. Look up Tinker Hatfield who designed III-XX, Bruce Kilgore who designed the II's, and Peter Moore who designed the I's.

Phil deserves it. Nike IS marketing, and the NBA is as popular as it is today in big part because of what Nike has done for the sport.

It's the Basketball Hall of Fame not the "Pro" Basketball Hall of Fame genius.
