I always try it on. I ask if they have my size, and then try it on. New Eras tend to run differently within the same size, so its best to try it on to see how it fits; if it gets uncomfortable, then you go up or down a size.
If they don't have my size, but only have a larger size (7 5/8, 7 3/4), AND it's a fitted I desperately want, I'll still buy it. When I get back, I then put some water all along the sweatband and wear the hat around the house. It will cause the hat to shrink a little and as it dries, it will contour to the shape of your head. It works sometimes.
