SB Dunks - Then and Now

So I have only really followed SB dunks for about a year and wanted some history. How often do/did box colors switch? When was the concept of a QS introduced? It seems like most older dunks had a theme/concept but may have been GRs. Now anything creative or clever is a QS.. Is this just to generate hype? Sorry if this is the wrong thread, and if so, where should I look to get schooled?

Here's the quick summary:

Around 03-07 SB Dunks were waaaaaay bigger than LeBron or Jordan. SB heads started the entire camping for limited CW's trend.

There are about 20-25 classic colorways and the markets for them are much smaller than they used to be. It seems like all of the "hot" LeBron/Kobe colorways coming out can trace their heritage to Nike SB breaking ground first.

ill tell you this..the hype on SB Dunks used to be ridiculous. thanks to Jordan/Lebron/ Nike Sportswear, the hype has died down and the prices of more sought after SB Dunks have tanked

the different generations of releases has been defined by box color

Orange box era (1999-2002)
Silver Box era (2003-2004)
Pink box era (2005-2006)
Black box era (2006-2007)
Gold box era (2007-2009)
Blue box era (2009-2011)
Red box era (2011 - present)

Themed colorways are primarily the only colorways that are really worth anything.

Inaccurate....
2 things:

The 1st series SB's released in 2002. Prior to that there were Dunk Pro B's (not SB's).

Dunk SB's currently do not come in RED boxes.

You've been educated!

that's all stuff I knew of, but thanks for confirming it. What ever happened to lace bags? Did they just stop using them in blue boxes?

Lacebags went out with part of the "a better world" and considered design initiative. It's more environmentally friendly to just toss the extra pair of laces into the shoe than to waste plastic on an extra bag to attach to the shoe. For a while I thought that the choice went through the whole company, but it looks like some AF1s still come with the extra laces in lacebags. Not sure what the reasoning is there though.

^True. I like the silver boxed Nike Sbs alot (only have one

). When I started the shoe
thing it was around '05 & I believe the "Tiffany" dunks were one of the most hyped
Nike Sbs of all time.

Went to some skateboard shop recently & didn't notice they stopped stuff the
tongue of lowtops

They started stuffing the lows again about a year ago. Just a bit before the retooled sole came out.

Correct..

after the Black box they fell off, hype included. They had a good run, but the SB headquarters lost a lot of people with the new design and to stop stuffing tongues for a minute. Do people still camp out for SB's? Havent bought a pair in 2-3 years

^ People camped for the Space Jam sb i remember reading about it in a News Article about the shop only having about 10-15 pairs with over 40 people camping haha.

Yea nontourages in a size 10.5 sat at my local spot for about a week. I was suprised because those are actually pretty dope.

welcome to the SB's OP. yeah, that website someone posted a few posts up and the description of the box years is your best source. personally, i think 2005- 2009 were my fav years for SB. colorways, themes, and even box color was a a good era for the SB line. i feel they've fallen off an lost their edge on the SB dunk line since 2009. but to each their own. the SB dunk line overall is and was a fun run of sneakers to collect because of how different they were as opposed to the jordan sig lines. i mean, neon green motley crue-themed dunks? so sick!!!

i miss some of the quality on the old sb's and the concepts, theres only a few recent releases that are decent

funny how the SB line really innovated collaborations and limited release type stuff and jordan and nike sportswear took that formula and its all you see now a days..

We're SBs like a "true sneakerhead" thing? as in like nowadays EVERYONE wants to cop the newest JB/NSW release, but I don't recall anyone outside of the game going out of their ways for SBs. Heck, I was even a hardcore skater and skated a few pairs of Zoom Tres (

one of the best shoes I have ever skated) but never had an idea of the whole dunk craze. Back then I only knew they had some sick cws lol.

If you have pairs in 9.5/10 that are collecting dust, HMU. I still need a few to add. Mostly looking for pink box and older. But if the price is right...

I still wear my SBs. I had stopped wearing them when they got so over hyped.

Now that they have lost some steam, I break them out alot more often!

SB steam and hype may have died down a little bit but i wear some of my older kicks and they still break necks and people know what u got on.

had dude bout to buy my money cat lows off my feet when i was at the military IV release but wasn't the right size for him.

also certain SB releases sell out same day where im at in tampa. Premiers sold out same day, same with nontourages. Koziks and crowns got those on sale but once that sale hit they where all gone.

SB's is what got me to start collecting shoes because i use to skateboard so i will always be collecting SB's regardless of the hype level. they are simply my favorite.
