WHO and PLZ take him off the bulls

Center Adonal Foyle has re-signed with the Orlando Magic for the 2008-09 season. A 10-year-veteran, Foyle opted out of his two-year contract after last season to become a free agent. Orlando Sentinel

Ben Gordon hasn't given up on staying with the Bulls, but he does see the writing on the wall. The Bulls don't want to pay the luxury tax, and unless that policy changes, they have a finite amount of money to offer Gordon to start a new contract. Add it up over six years, and the restricted free agent would have to accept a smaller average salary (about $9.8 million) than the team offered him last summer. Arlington Heights Daily Herald

"It looks that way," Ben Gordon said Friday. "I don't think they want to lose their leading scorer for nothing. Maybe they do, I don't know." Gordon spoke at the Bulls-White Sox Training Academy in Lisle, where he hosted a basketball camp. He'll take part in another camp next week featuring a different Bulls guest every day. Aaron Gray, Joakim Noah, Derrick Rose and Bulls legend Bob Love are also scheduled to attend. Arlington Heights Daily Herald

Gordon could sign the one-year qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer, when several NBA teams will have cap room to spend. In order to do that, however, he'd have to endure a lame-duck season with the Bulls. His playing time might even drop if the Bulls chose not to ease the current backcourt logjam, which also includes Kirk Hinrich, Larry Hughes, Thabo Sefolosha and Rose, their top draft pick. Arlington Heights Daily Herald

Gordon said he'd like to set a deadline for getting his contract resolved, but he didn't want to name a date and clearly wants to give the process more time. He also will not join Luol Deng on the Great Britain national team next month unless his contract is signed. Arlington Heights Daily Herald

There are teams interested in doing a sign-and-trade transaction for Gordon. Still, the Bulls would likely refuse to take back salaries that would lift them into luxury-tax territory. "All you need is one," Gordon said of a potential trade partner. "You don't need 29. All you need is one. A sign-and-trade, both sides would have to agree, so we'll see what happens. Arlington Heights Daily Herald

Free agent Dwayne Mitchell, a 6-foot-5 guard out of Louisiana-Lafayette, signed a contract Friday with the Lakers. Per team policy, terms were not announced. Mitchell played the majority of last season for the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League before leaving in February to join Brose Baskets Bamberg in Germany. Orange County Register

As the calendar turns to August, the Suns continue to work the phones in the hope of bringing second-round draft pick Goran Dragic to Phoenix this fall - with the idea of making the 22-year-old the full-time backup to Steve Nash at the point. Spanish newspapers and Web sites are reporting that Tau Ceramica, the Spanish team that owns Dragic's rights, is looking into backup plans to replace him if he heads to the NBA this summer. Tau has had talks with former Sun Andre Barrett, offering about $800,000 for his services. Veteran point guard Earl Boykins is also a consideration. East Valley Tribune

Even if Dragic comes to Phoenix, the Suns could sign a veteran point guard, with the understanding he would be third-string, or sign a younger free agent with the idea of developing him. East Valley Tribune

The Pistons agreed to a one-year deal with backup Walter Herrmann. The 6-foot-9 small forward was an unrestricted free agent. Salary information was not disclosed. Detroit Free Press

On Thursday, the 76ers and guard Lou Williams reached an agreement. Yesterday, Williams' agent, Merle Scott, said his client would formally sign the five-year contract next week when the two parties can "schedule a time." The value of the contract is reportedly about $25 million. In his three-year Sixers career, Williams has averaged 7.2 points and 2.2 assists per game, but he averaged 11.5 points per game last season and 12 in the 76ers' six-game playoff loss to Detroit. Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard was arrested in his hometown after police said he was drag racing at nearly 40 mph above the posted speed. Howard is charged with going 94 mph in a 55 mph zone, careless and reckless driving, and speed competition. AP/Philadelphia Daily News

An officer conducting speed enforcement spotted Howard's black Lexus and another vehicle approaching at a high rate of speed on U.S. Highway 421 shortly before midnight. The officer stopped only Howard's vehicle. Howard, 28, was released on a written promise to appear in court Sept. 23 in Winston-Salem. The incident is the latest in a bewildering few months for Howard, who sparked controversy during the playoffs with comments on the radio about his off-season marijuana use. Soon after, his late-night birthday party infuriated former coach Avery Johnson and led him to cancel practice the day before Game 5 of the series against New Orleans. Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Throughout the off-season, the Mavs have denied any interest in trading Josh Howard and say they have been impressed with his work ethic and desire to make amends. A late first-round pick by the Mavs in 2003, Howard, an All-Star in 2007, is entering his sixth NBA season and the second of a four-year, $40 million contract. Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Olympiakos isconsidering a run at LeBron James when he becomes a free agent in 2010, according to a source close to Sports Illustrated's Ian Thomsen.

As a free agent in 2010, his new contract in the NBA would start at less than $20 million annually.

The owners of Olympiakos already lose millions annually on their player payroll. It may be worthwhile to them to lose $40 million ormore in exchange for the grandeur of LeBron.

NBACommissioner David Stern fired back against accusations from former SuperSonics' owner Howard Schultz on Friday, claiming that he never made threateningremarks to the executive, according to The Associated Press.

Schultz, who owned the Sonics until July 2006, claimed in a court filing last week that Stern told him during a conversation that theeffort would become "very expensive" for Schultz and his partners if he did not enter a settlement with the city.

"At no time during the conversation did I threaten Mr. Schultz in any way -- either expressly or implicitly -- regarding hiscontinuation of this lawsuit or any other matter," Stern wrote in the document filed Friday.
Suns Still Trying To BringDragic
Aug 01, 2008 11:02 PM EST

phx_40.gif
The PhoenixSuns are still hoping to have second round selection Goran Dragic in uniform this season as the backup for Steve Nash, the East Valley Tribune isreporting.

Tau Ceramica have looked at Andre Barrett and possibly Earl Boykins as potential replacements for Dragic should he leave, with thebuyout still being the biggest hurdle.

Dragic's buyout is believed to be 1 million euros, or about $1.5 million U.S., after next season, but if both sides can form anagreement on a settlement early he could leave this year.

Phoenix can only contribute $500,000 towards a buyout, however, and if Dragic was to leave this year it is believed that thesettlement would be higher than next year's buyout price.

A source closeto the negotiations has said the 76ers and Andre Iguodala's agent are in a constant dialogue.

If Iguodala plays this season for the qualifying offer, next summer's market could be even tougher. Teams might tighten theirbelts - thus protecting cap space - to have money for the free-agent class of 2010.

Gordon needs to realize that Deng is getting paid more because he does more for the team. Deng isn't one-dimensional like Gordon.

how much did barbosa get paid? ben gordon should get something similar to that deal, no way he gets more than luol deng

Dude's be forgettin that you really can't go out and meet a chick once she knows you worth millions. The only chicks that you know are real; are gonna be the same chick you been with when you was broke and eatin peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
