I don't see what's so funny about the fact that defenses would have to respect J.R. Smith...

Im not saying they would have to Key on him....But you definitely have to respect his 3pt range.

I mean, thats not even a question to me...

The boy hit 150 + 3's last year (as the 6th man) at a 40% clip and you mean to tell me that defenses wouldn't respect him?????

That's why I had to shake my head Monday when I saw a report out of Cleveland saying the Nuggets and Cavaliers are talking about a deal involving young shooting guard J.R. Smith. The 22-year-old Smith is a restricted free agent, but there is no indication that he and the Nuggets are going to part ways anytime soon. In fact, I've been told by a very reliable source that J.R. is not going anywhere and he could re-sign with Denver within the next 7 to 10 days. Smith is one of those young players the Nuggets can ill afford to let go. Rocky Mountain News

The Nuggets already have extended a one-year, $3.04 qualifying offer to Smith, but it looks like he's going to get some long-term security. The question becomes: How much are the Nuggets willing to commit? Smith told the Rocky Mountain News last month that he hadn't heard from any other teams. Rocky Mountain News

The last time the Spurs saw Jannero Pargo, he was jacking up jump shots for New Orleans in the waning moments of Game 7 of last season's Western Conference semifinals. There is a chance the next jumper Pargo hoists could come in a Spurs uniform. The rumor in one Western Conference front office Monday afternoon had it that Pargo was about to agree to -- or perhaps already had agreed to -- a deal that would have brought the backup point guard to San Antonio. Ah, but not so fast. San Antonio Express-News

Pargo's agent, Mark Bartelstein, acknowledged ongoing talks with the Spurs, but said his client has yet to agree to a deal with anyone. "The Spurs speak for themselves," Bartelstein said Monday. "It's a great place to play. They are limited in what they can do financially, but we are definitely talking to them." San Antonio Express-News

The Spurs are one of a handful of teams in the hunt for Pargo, who still has not ruled out a return to New Orleans. "We're trying to get to a decision, no question," Bartelstein said. "We're working on it, but no decision has come as of yet." The Pargo-to-San-Antonio rumors remain just rumors, for now. San Antonio Express-News

Serge Ibaka, the No. 24 overall pick in this year's draft, has signed a three-year contract with a professional team in Spain. Ibaka's contract with Ricoh Manresa has NBA buyout clauses at the end of each season that could allow him to join Oklahoma City's franchise before the deal expires. Oklahoman

The rehabilitation of Greg Oden and his right knee is officially over. Now, it's all about basketball. So on Monday, the Blazers' 2007 No. 1 overall draft pick who missed all of last season because of a knee injury, began the latest and most significant step in his comeback. Oregonian

Greg Oden practiced for the first time in full-contract drills, going up against teammate Channing Frye for 45 minutes at the Blazers' practice facility in Tualatin. For moments, it was awe-inspiring. Early in the workout, Oden took a long stride and ripped at the rim with such ferocity that the shot clock mounted on the backboard shook for more than five seconds punctuating one of his dunks. Oregonian

And for longer stretches Monday, it became evident that Oden still has a ways to go before he becomes the dominant force so many Blazers fans envision. The workout, Oden's first against an NBA player since he had season-ending knee surgery last September, revealed that he was decidedly out of game shape. Oregonian

Jensen said Oden's recovery has gone very well, particularly because there have been limited instances of pain and no evidence of swelling in the right knee. "His knee looks really good," said Jensen, who also supervised the microfracture rehabilitations of former Blazers Zach Randolph and Darius Miles. Oregonian

"Ready to get some work in, that's what I think every day," Oden said. "Just trying to get myself better. You know, just getting ready for the season. I'm looking forward to it more than anybody else. I put a lot more pressure on myself -- like you see when I miss a layup or something like that -- I think about it worse than anybody else. That's just what is on my mind always -- get myself ready and good when the season comes." Oregonian

Midway through the workout, Oden had to be prodded more and more. He often rested his hands on his knees, and several times had to be reminded where to go, all while the superbly conditioned Frye dashed and darted around the court. On one occasion Frye bee-lined toward the basket and was met by an outstretched Oden. The collision resulted in the 6-11, 245-pound Frye barreling backward while Oden held his ground. "That's a big boy, man," Frye said, smiling and shaking his head. Oregonian

Oden would not reveal his latest weight -- saying, "It's too big of a deal" -- but Jensen said the last time he checked, Oden was hovering around 290 pounds. He hopes to have Oden at 280 by training camp. In his only season at Ohio State, Oden played at 275 pounds. "The people at Ohio State said once he starts playing basketball, he loses weight really quickly," Jensen said. Oregonian

On Rodney Stuckey: "You know, we see Rodney as a starter -- he's a sixth starter," Michael Curry said Monday at Wabeek Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, where he was participating in a charity golf outing for the St. Cecilia basketball program. Curry, an assistant last season under Flip Saunders, is counting on continued improvement from Stuckey, guard Arron Afflalo and forwards Jason Maxiell and Amir Johnson, plus the addition of Brown, to serve as the talent infusion necessary for the Pistons to return to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2005. Detroit Free Press

After the Pistons were eliminated in the Eastern Conference finals for the third consecutive season, Pistons president Joe Dumars put everyone on notice, saying the team had no sacred cows and that Stuckey was the only untouchable in a trade. Almost immediately, speculation centered on trades involving point guard Chauncey Billups and small forward Tayshaun Prince. Detroit Free Press

But no deal has materialized, and it looks more and more likely the Pistons' core will continue to be Billups, Prince, Rasheed Wallace, Richard Hamilton and Antonio McDyess for at least one more season -- or perhaps until the February trade deadline. Curry is fine with that. He's also fine with the addition of Brown, whom the Pistons hope will benefit from a change of scenery. Detroit Free Press

If the Nets do manage to sign potential free agent LeBron James before the start of the 2010-11 season, it's possible their fans in New Jersey could get the first look at him, as opposed to those in Brooklyn. The company that plans to build the team's new home in Brooklyn acknowledged Monday that the arena may not be open until the 2010-11 season is well underway. NY Daily News

The Celtics yesterday said that NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Paul Pierce would not comment on the early Sunday morning incident during which he was stopped in Las Vegas for "erratic driving." The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that Pierce had been handcuffed after making an illegal lane change in front of the Tropicana Hotel and Casino. Pierce, driving a white BMW, was pulled over at about 3 a.m. Sunday. Boston Globe

Pierce passed the field sobriety test, and a Breathalyzer determined that his blood alcohol content was below the .08 legal intoxication limit in Nevada. Boston Globe
