Just when you thought ‘The Flash”s TV future was all-but assured as an ‘Arrow‘ spinoff, The CW has literally doubled down on its titular hero. The latest to join the scarlet speedster’s 2014 TV updates is none other than TV’s previous live-action ‘Flash,’ 1990 CBS star John Wesley Shipp! Of course, there couldn’t be two Flashes at once…could there?
At least for the moment, neither Warner Bros. nor The CW have offered any details of Shipp’s “mystery role,” only that “the part [is] intended to be a recurring guest star in series.” Shipp famously donned the red tights muscle suit as Barry Allen in CBS 1990 incarnation of ‘The Flash,’ which even attained the pedigree of casting ‘Star Wars‘ icon Mark Hamill as Flash villain The Trickster, though the program only lasted a single season.
For his part, Shipp is no stranger to The CW either, having previously portrayed Dawson Leery’s father Mitch across multiple seasons of The WB’s ‘Dawson’s Creek.’ Naturally, producers are keen to keep a bit of mystery in Shipp’s 2014 ‘Flash’ role, though even with a bit of time-travel inherent to the character, we might not necessarily expect Shipp to reprise his role as Barry Allen. Paging Jay Garrick, anyone?
Elsewhere, ‘The Flash’ has cast in known roles Tom Cavanagh as Harrison Wells, Candice Batton as Iris West, daughter to Jesse L. Martin’s Detective West, along with Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon, better known as DC character Vibe. ‘The Vampire Diaries‘ star Rick Cosnett will portray Central City Police transfer Detective Eddie Thawne, who likely corresponds to ‘Flash’ comic villain and time-traveler Eobard Thawne, better known as “Professor Zoom” or “Reverse Flash.” Danielle Panabaker will play Caitlin Snow, a highly intelligent bioengineering expert who lost her fiancé during an explosion at S.T.A.R. Labs and is an incarnation of DC villain Killer Frost.
