i recently got an iPad and use it mostly for sketching and note taking. i tried the Sketchbook Pro app, and it's cool. i ended up liking ArtStudio better for the features and interface though. Here's a sample of some of the sketches I've done on my ipad:

Concerning maximizing battery life, the opposite is actually true. Even though the iPod has a life of around 600 charge cycles, it's a little confusing, since people don't really understand what exactly a "charge cycle" is. Straight from Apple's website concerning batteries:
