U.S.' Jurgen Klinsmann says relegation system would add thrills to MLS

Major League Soccer introducing relegation to its structure would increase the competitiveness of the league and the United States national team, U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann told German paper Rheinische Post.

MLS has been a closed shop ever since its introduction some 20 years ago, unlike the majority of domestic competitions around the world which are not franchise-based. The ownership model allows investors to buy into the league, which has a regular season and playoffs, but no relegation system.

The German-born Klinsmann, who began his career in his home country's Bundesliga, told the paper that adapting the common system of relegation could work wonders for the U.S. team, and also add an extra thrill for spectators.

The former Stuttgart striker cited the example of his old club successfully battling against relegation in the Bundesliga season just ended.

"I got up at half-past six in the morning to see their [final] match [of the season] in Paderborn," Klinsmann said. "That clubs like Stuttgart were down there, shows how close the Bundesliga is, how much quality it has.

"This thrill of the relegation battle is non-existent in the U.S. league. The risk for club investors to all of a sudden play in the second league would be too high. But the sporting side would benefit from it. Our players from Europe know that. That furthers our national team. Something is at stake week in, week out. Be it at the top or at the bottom, you always have to perform."

Obviously U.S. lower divisions aint England but it's not the lack of  support, it's the franchise structure and ownership that makes it unrealistic. 

I mean the fact that current buy in rate is $110,000,000 says it all.

Why would an owner who recently paid an expansion fee accept even the possibility of operating in a market that's inferior to the one they paid for?

Why would an owner like Robert Kraft, or Hunt, or Anschutz, someone who's been around since the beginning, the true dark ages of American soccer and invested hundreds of millions if not billions of personal $ into growing this league and building it from the ground up accept the possibility of their franchise being removed from said league?

You'll see two equal yet separate 20 team leagues similar to MLB, with the champions of each playing for the MLS cup, before we see promotion/relegation in this country. Bet that.

As a fan I hate relegation. If the Knicks got sent to the D-league I wouldn't watch one game. Culturally it wouldn't be accepted in an American League.

I hear you. The reason I mention packing on their stadiums is because that all = money.
If there's large support of lower league footy, then there's money in merchandise, ticket sales, TV rights etc for the owner. Something that won't happen in the US right now.

It's just not ready yet. It'll get there. Along with having academies that are club owned and free for players instead of the current pay to play setup.

FIFA postpones 2026 World Cup bidding process

The announcement of the bidding process for the 2026 World Cup has been delayed by FIFA.

The decision was due to be made in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, in May 2017 but amid allegations over corruption into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids, the process has been puit on hold with no clear date as to when it can be made.

The 2018 and 2022 tournaments were awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively, but both are being investigated by Swiss authorities due to allegations of bribery and corruption within their bidding processes.

FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said on Wednesday: "Due to the situation, I think it's nonsense to start any bidding process for the time being. It will be postponed."

Among the countries interested in hosting the 2026 World Cup are believed to be USA, Canada, Mexico and Colombia.

Speaking in a press conference in south Russia, Valcke was also asked about $10million paid into accounts controlled by disgraced former vice-president Jack Warner, wanted in the USA on corruption charges, and whether he had been questioned by police in connection with the payment.

Valcke added: "I have never been questioned and the Swiss police has all the files, and I am happy to answer any question as transparently as I can.

"I am in front of you but I have nothing else to add. What do you want me to add? Do you want me to take things and hit my head, and say 'yeah, yeah, yeah, I have been stupid - I should have asked many questions'.

"I think it's too much now and I will not take any more questions about this $10m. This is the first time I have done this in front of so many journalists. I was destroyed by the French media, maybe for other reasons, but that's another point.

"I don't have to justify myself and the only person I will answer questions to about this is my father, who is 80 years old and does not understand what is happening about me."

A date for the election of Sepp Blatter's replacement as FIFA president looks set to be decided next month.

FIFA is to hold an extraordinary meeting of its Executive Committee in July to discuss potential dates for the election of a new president.

President Sepp Blatter announced his intention to resign earlier this month just four days after his re-election and six days after nine FIFA officials were indicted on charges of racketeering conspiracy and corruption.

Blatter will remain in office until an extraordinary Congress can be held to appoint his successor. December 16 has been reported as the likely date for the Congress.

A FIFA spokesperson told Perform: "An extraordinary Executive Committee meeting is confirmed to take place in July, the precise date to be confirmed within this week.

"On this occasion, various date options for the extraordinary elective Congress will be discussed."

Speaking of Bayern,

Bayern Munich will not spend crazy money on players this summer, according to their chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Bayern's club-record transfer outlay was the 40 million euros spent for Javi Martinez two years ago and that would have to be smashed if they were to succeed in luring a player like Paul Pogba to the Bundesliga.

But Rummenigge told Sport Bild: "Bayern Munich are definitely not going to buy any player for 100 million euros.

"The fact is we do want quality and we will do certain things. But the transfer window has only just opened and we already have a high-quality squad.

"Of course the coach is involved intensively in all our (transfer) considerations. At the end of the day, it is he who has to work with the players."

- Petr Cech is close to a decision on his next club and keen to remain in England and ideally London, according to Sky sources.

I guess Cech will be a Gunner next season.
