This is true, there's teams in the Eredivisie and Liga MX that have turf in their stadium. :x

I thought FIFA had a universal regulation for pitch size and surface?

Turf is pure garbage and I don't know how these MLS players do it sliding all across the field. Not to mention they usually wear FG boots on artificial grass. I know their feet must hurt and be hot as **** :x
 
They definitely need to get rid of turf fields for the pros. I miss playing on real grass. Growing up every field i played on was grass (some dirt and grass others mostly grass). But i haven't played a competitive game on grass in 2 years now :{

I think if you rounded up all the footy fans in this country and forced them to be MLS fans, the MLS would be at the hockey level of popularity and get way better ratings along with a following...

Unfortunately if you're a footy fan in this country - chances are you're not an MLS fan (I fall into that category and I can't help it, sorry).

Personally I have no incentive to watch MLS, I already my interest heavily invested in CFB, NFL, NBA, La Liga, EPL. That's more than enough for me and I know I'm not missing out anything with the MLS.

Team USA also doesn't help out MLS's cause, they're an absolutely awful watch, for the most part your domestic league & national team will always be linked.

As a Portland Timbers fan I feel blessed to be apart of a passionate fan base that was with the team since Day 1. I don't know but something about the Pacific Northwest has people supporting anything local. We bleed our team colors and have probably the best rivalry in the MLS between Seattle and Vancouver that incites our fandom even more. We also even have our own Cascadia Cup between the 3 teams.

Its probably a lot easier for us since we have limited teams to root for, but I don't know how other cities don't find a way to copy our blueprint and support their local club especially with bigger populations and bigger star players. Of course the quality isn't there but that's the beauty of the MLS. The sport isn't gonna be world class over night. You don't watch the MLS for world class performances, you watch because you want to support your local team and want it to grow even bigger one day. Barcelona wasnt built in one day.

I had no incentive to watch MLS either outside of highlights and the playoffs but thats changing in 2017 with Atlanta United

Also I do believe that MLS has made progress and will gain more traction as far as joining the ranks of the top American sports it will just be a while.

I kinda see what you guys are saying. If i lived close to a soccer team...if Baltimore got their own team i would probably support. I mean i am not really a baseball fan and i go to O's games because its close easy and fun to attend. Id do the same for a soccer team...probably even more so since i actually like the sport.

But as a casual fan...i can't watch MLS. Its like watching the NBA - D league. Why would i do that when i can watch the NBA? I have La-liga and the EPL and now even some Budisliga games being televised. Thats not even going across sports
 
The NBA D-League comparison is spot on. Its a grind most games because the quality is poor and when the great players shine its like everyone else is so pedestrian. If you don't have a team to root for its awful because there's no incentive for you to watch. What I don't get is the people who actually live in MLS cities and complain about how poor it is. Amazing things still happen in these games. Que the Amarikwa 30 yd chip and Higuain Bycycle against the Timbers so far in the first 2 games of the season. World Class goals.

Its about being a fan and being loyal to your local team. If I wanted to watch great basketball I'd watch the Spurs and Warriors play every night but since I'm a fan of my hometown team I still watch and support them even if my team sucks. Same logic for the MLS. We can't all be Spurs and Warrior fans and we all can't be Barcelona and Bayern Munich fans. I don't get the logic of turning a blind eye to your MLS team when the other sports teams you root for probably aren't far off better.

This is a good discussion. If I could chime in:

Not even two years ago I thought that soccer was the wackest sport in the world. Didn't know anything about it, just "knew" it was boring. That's what's going through the minds of so many people here. I think soccer just isn't athletic enough, in the sense that you have those like Messi, who looks like a guy off the street, completely dominate the game. Save for maybe baseball, the best players in our sports are freaks (notable exception Steph Curry). It's in our heritage to want something bigger, faster, stronger, than the rest, it's why we do so well in the Olympics. Soccer is a sport you have to appreciate as an art form, that skill is way more important than athleticism, although it is a nice bonus. I think soccer will really get on within the next 50 years tho, because I really see the NFL and MLB decline in popularity. NBA is on the rise, but MLS and soccer in general will supersede those two when the time comes.

Edit: btw anyone, are the kits cheaper to get at the stadiums? My friend is in London rn and I'm trying to get a jersey if they have it for the low @HEGGSY@rck3sactown

Soccer will never supercede American football here, american football is just religious and part of the fabric of society in parts of this country as is soccer is overseas.
 
The more mls expands, the more the product on the field is diluted. The USA has the best leagues in the world for basketball, hockey, baseball, and football because they pay the most and the competition is the highest level. The mls is in competition with Mexico, Spain, England, Italy, Germany, and France for the highest level of players. Players can make just as much overseas, and play against the best in the world.
 
I hate the playoff system in MLS too. They should do like everyone else does in the world. It actually makes it more interesting

I have a feeling they will implement a relegation system in a decade if MLS continues to grow, but that's if it somehow reaches to 30-40 teams. There's not enough domestic clubs in the US/Canada to do tiers like that.

That's why MLS will never be superior to Liga MX, Liga MX already got that system in place.
 
Im a huge Chicago Fire fan. I attend several games a year and I watch when I can. MLS doesnt hold my attention nearly as much as the EPL does, but it still interests me. Personally, the Fire have a stadium in Bridgview, IL which really isnt close to anything. I went to a Fire game when they still played at Soldier Field at it was epic.

Team-wise, we are the Chicago Fire. A team that has won consistently before from the greatest city in the world. Has anyone seen our squad lately? An avid soccer fan would be hard pressed to recognize 3-4 guys. I like our new coach, we have some decent youngsters, but we lack anything that resembles a star. How can a founding team in Chicago have such a weak team? Ownership. The owner doesn't re-invest in the team. A. because he doesn't have to, B. because he doesn't care. Until that changes my team is doomed and my interest in MLS wanes.

Nah Chicago is dope. I'm going to catch a NYFC game eventually. Only a quick ride on the 1 train to Yankee stadium. Tickets aren't bad priced at all.

Once I experience a MLS game in person I can truly see how I feel about the league I guess
