i would point to his 2019 Grammy speech as the motive behind the withdrawals. he also turned down their offer for a performance that year

their awards are no longer a necessary validation for rap and rnb, and I hope over time more artists withdraw from their ceremony.

if you're an artist, your validation is when you pack a venue full of folks who spent their time and money to see you, despite either of those resources likely being far more limited to them than yours are to you.

I think drake's set was very tactical. By playing only his new stuff, he avoids a legitimate comparison to Ye. He didn't bring his catalog heat, whereas Ye did, so you can't ever definitely say Drake is the lesser of the two in terms of catalog.

That's exactly it. My mans didn't want folks thinking this was some pseudo-Verzuz. I get it but it wasn't executed well in my opinion. He definitely brought the energy down.

I think Drake (and 40) just used this as a pre-tour prep. Really wish we would’ve gotten a transition from Say You Will to Say What’s Real though.
