I kinda like the question Maxx posed to Bob.
"if james kirkland had that cut, in front of his hometown crowd, or in front of any crowd, do you think he woulda said 'I cant see I dont wannacontinue' ?"

IMO Ghost took the easy route cus Yordan had come ready to fight and was a lil more than the Guererro camp expected.
anyway a lil disappointed in the night overall, but anytime I get to see Victor, I am pleasaed. He is a Young surgeon out there. I dunno, Hype? I think thatstoo strong a word, clearly he has star potential and excellent skill and power. Im definitely on the Bandwagon and been on it for 2 yrs now.

I just now watched demetrius Andrade from FNF. My Dude lookin Good

B-Hop wants Adamek. I'd pay for that Fight!

I think Williams has the tools to take apart Kirkland.

Calzaghe has rejected Golden Boy's offer for the rematch with Hopkins so it looks like Hopkins-Adamek will probably happen.

I like Kirkland's grit and determination but there's really no method to his madness. If he gets in there with someone who holds their ground and throwaccurate sharp punches, he'll be in for a long night.

Adamek vs. B-Hop make that happen!

IMO Ghost took the easy route cus Yordan had come ready to fight and was a lil more than the Guererro camp expected.

Exactly.

just seen the rewind.

smh at this dude juliio. i really thought homie was going to school dude considering he's WAY more polished.

i guess it just shows what happens when you either don't got heart or aint ready to get in a fight.

IMO Ghost took the easy route cus Yordan had come ready to fight and was a lil more than the Guererro camp expected.
Same thing I thought but he looked a little drained to me.

Watching the replay now of the Kirkland fight, overall wasn't really impressed with the card. Just caught that mini exchange in the third round.

Paul would pick James apart.

Punisher would demolish Kirkland IMO.

I know that James and Anne got that good rapport but he needs to bring in another trainer that can help him be a slicker boxer. Anne's pad training issubpar and you can see it affect Kirklands lack of accuracy in the fights. He should keep her on as his physical trainer and corner second but with someonewith Freddie Roach or even Manny Stewart as his chief trainer.....he would be a beast.

Dan Rafael: (1:22 AM ET ) So you've all been asking when Ortiz would fight next. I was talking to his manager, Shelly Finkel. He said Victor likely would either be on May 2 on the Hatton-Pac undercard or on June 27 on Boxing After Dark. No opponents were discussed.

Cole(UT): Julio's footwork looked great if he was doing the shuttle run at the NFL combine
Zach MPLS: Dan, I don't want to sound mean but can you remember the last time a Buddy Mcgirt fighter not just won, but didn't totally get his butt whipped? I mean it used to be a joke but now its getting kind of sad, i feal bad for Buddy and his fighters.

sn2.gif
Dan Rafael: (12:54 AM ET ) Buddy is on a brutal run right now.
Jose (Mexico City): i personally think Paul Williams would drill mr. kirkland. what do you say sir?

sn2.gif
Dan Rafael: (12:34 AM ET ) Very tough fight for Kirkland. Williams is huge, tall, long armed and takes a good shot. Kirkland might have trouble getting in on him and Williams throws a lot of punches, including a good jab. He could be a nightmare for Kirkland, especially at this stage of his career
Justin (Springfield, NJ): Who does DiBella want for Berto? A soft touch?

sn2.gif
Dan Rafael: (12:15 AM ET ) Somebody probably as soft as Gumby.

Bo Jack (Los Angeles): Dan, Kirkland is a pressure fighter, who lacks defense and footwork. Put him in there against Winky, P.Williams, and the A plus fighters and he will be exposed. He is not a big puncher, pressure yes, your thoughts..

sn2.gif
Dan Rafael: (12:12 AM ET ) I think a slick boxer would give him fits.
Greg(Los Angeles): Did HBO turn down the idea of Campbell-Judah? I dont agree with that if they did.

sn2.gif
Dan Rafael: (12:03 AM ET ) Probably. I wouldn't buy it either. It serves no purpose. If you put one of them on you do it against a younger fighter with a future and make that younger fighter pass the test. Or you put one of them in a title fight. Having them fight each other in a fight that is not a natural rivalry (and they are not really the same size) makes no sense. It's not like it's a bad fight, but if I am HBO and using either guy, I am matching them with different opponents, not each other.

Guanoman (Puerto Rico): I was reading the notebook and it looks like Dibella is intereste in a collazo vs julio rematch in may 30 but if that fight does not happened do you think hbo will aprove Berto vs Quintana.

sn2.gif
Dan Rafael: (11:58 PM ET ) Berto-Collazo is very unlikely for May from what I am told and they don't want to fight Quintana either. I think DiBella and HBO are going to battle a lit bit over this one.
Ryan (Durham, NC): Why would HBO not approve Berto - Quintana that sounds like a very legitimate title fight to me.

sn2.gif
Dan Rafael: (12:46 AM ET ) HBO would take that fight in a heartbeat. DiBella doesn't want to do it.

either +%#@ or get off the toilet.

Time for Berto to fight big time opponents, anything less would be a farce.

MELLIGEN WON BY 5TH ROUND TKO

melligen-prieto.weighin.280w.jpg

Mark Jason Melligen, a top boxing prospect from ALA Promotions in Cebu, Philippines showed Top Rank Promotions why he deserved this fight today in Colorado. The fight he has been waiting for four months. When there was a cloud of uncertainty hanging over his head until the last minute whether the fight would push through or not.

Thanks to his Las Vegas based trainer, Tony Martin, who persevered until Top Rank Promotions matchmaker finally gave in. He returned their trust with an impressive display of boxing skills from the first round until the end. He knocked out Mexican Gerardo Cesar Prieto in the third round and he could have finished him off if not for the bell intervention what could have been a more rosy and remarkable result for his boxing debut in America.

Melligen did not let up in the next rounds and continue where he left off. He kept on punishing his opponent until Prieto could not anymore answer the bell that starts the 6th round. "No Mas."

In a telephone interview with Melligen, he said, "I could see his punches. He was big but he was slow. Throughout the fight, I punished him with my combinations and most of them were power punches. He could also hit me but they were not that strong as compared to what he received from me. I am so happy and I do thank my manager, Mr. Aldeguer and my trainer, Tony Martin and his son, Edward, who accompanied and support me here.

"In all honesty, I am not completely satisfied with the performance of Melligen. I know he could do better. At 147 pounds, he was a little slow and did not throw the combination I wanted him to inflict to his opponent. Melligen knows he needs to bring down his fighting weight in his next fight in order to maximize his potential," Tony Martin said over the phone.

This fight will prove to be the stepping stone of Mark Jason Melligen. News of his impressive training at Mayweather gym reached the upper echelon of boxing honchos. More so, with this stunning debut at Colorado where for sure those who witnessed him fight will remember him and follow his career. If he maintains strong discipline, listen to the advice of his team and continue his love of boxing, there is no way but up for him."
Reason i highlighted Mayweather gym... Melligen is a southpaw, Filipino, about 5'8 and a solid 150 lbs... similar built as you know who... and got some info that i can't say in public

Can somebody guide me through adding/editing Sigs? Still can't getmy Team Boxing up.

Finally got around to watching the fights...

- It's pretty obvious...HBO and Golden Boy are trying to develop Victor Ortiz into the "Next" Oscar De La Hoya, IMO. He's gotten the biggestpush out of all these next generation fighters. How many times has HBO mentioned his story, his looks, how marketable he is. I think it's well deserved,though...he's pretty much the best young talent in Boxing, IMO. Next up, he should fight somebody like a Junior Witter, if he picks up an impressiveW...he'll def be ready to move up within the top 10 ranks.

- Do fighters not know about Buddy McGirt's recent record when they hire him? Regardless, training Antonio Tarver (Pre-Bernard Hopkins/Rocky Balboa) andArturo Gatti (Post-Mickey Ward) are his claim to fame.

-

The Love Child. Boxing is a crazy game, 3 years ago...Julio was onhis way to becoming a superstar. Who knows what's next for him now...I mean, he's still ONLY 24 and the 3 L's on his resume have come todecent/good fighters. He just can't beat damn southpaws...plus, he was never able to adjust to Kirkland's constant pressure. His power would be
eek.gif
at 147, but Welterweight isn't what it was 3 years ago...hewouldn't last now.

- Ann Wolfe's training techniques are
pimp.gif
The bag w/ the moving truck,in particular but Kirkland needs a new damn trainer. IMO, the hype train needs to slow down because he still has too many flaws in his game. Horrible footwork(
sick.gif
Sit down on your damn punches, James), no Jab AT ALL, and he still hasa suspect Chin IMO. What makes James Kirkland stand out is the fact that 154 is a weak !%@ division, come on...Sergio Mora was a champion
laugh.gif
. IMO, Sergio Martinez would box circles around Kirkland...and I don't evenhave to mention PAUL.

I dont know why im coming into this so late but it was odd night for boxing

1. Guererro Cut was very bad but Yourdan was a kinda tricky guy but the blood was in his so i will give him the benefit of it
2. Victor had Mighty Mike damn near doing the soulja boy from that left hand he was out of it and he FINISHED HIM off . Victor should keep progressing .
3 . Poor Colombian fighters just cant get over the hump . Kirkland was on Julio with crazy pressure Julio could never really get set to punch neither has muchdefense they way they where bouncing hard shots off each other .Kirkland is pretty much the new John "the beast "Mugabi . Good fight while it lastedthough but it was one sided .

Did anyone else have the urge to go and flip tires over with shovels or punch a heavy bag hanging off a truck ?

Did anyone else have the urge to go and flip tires over with shovels or punch a heavy bag hanging off a truck?
I was ready to do it I was thinking how there's any way I could do that in the city

This #%$%!@+*%@*% doesn't even want Berto to fight Quintana? Come on son this is starting to get absurd.

By David A. Avila

A few of the best prizefighters in the world today have all mentioned one fighter who they'd like to challenge. That person has been retired for more than a year and his name is Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr.

"He's the best pound for pound fighter and I'd like to fight him," said Juan Manuel Marquez just after his knockout victory a week ago over Juan Diaz.

For months the rumors have filtered that Mayweather was broke, that he's healing an injured shoulder, or that he's busy with hip-hop. Boxing is not an option.

Basically they're all rumors until now.

Mayweather was seen sparring in his own Las Vegas gym this past Friday March 6 by a source of mine. If a fighter has an injured shoulder he wouldn't be sparring. If he's retired, then why put on the gloves?

It could be Mayweather is prepping for a return to boxing and a few more mega fights.

The last time I called his front man Leonard Ellerbe, I was told that Mayweather is too busy promoting Lil Wayne and other hip-hop acts. Then a day later Ellerbee told another boxing writer that he could be interested in returning to boxing. Calls to Ellerbee were not returned on Monday.

Aside from Marquez, a number of top prizefighters like Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley and Paul Williams have openly challenged or expressed a wish to fight Mayweather?

Why?

Is it because they see the former pound for pound king as a weak link?

Before Mayweather hung up the gloves after stopping England's Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton in December 2007, he had beaten Oscar De La Hoya and Zab Judah and was almost unanimously declared the best fighter on the planet.

But along came Pacquiao and Marquez who have moved up several weight divisions and proven good enough to handle fighters above 140 pounds. The stage is set.

"We could fight at 140 pounds," said Marquez.

Pacquiao, who has a tough fight against Hatton on May 2, has not mentioned Mayweather's name recently out of respect to his British opponent. But his convincing win over De La Hoya was something the Las Vegas fighter could not do.

Recently, Pomona, California's resident speedster Mosley, surprisingly blitzed by former welterweight kingpin Antonio Margarito. Many had seen Sugar Shane as past his prime but his performance against the Mexican slugger dazzled boxing fans. And, he has always declared a willingness to fight Mayweather.

Back in January 2000, following a Mosley victory over Willy Wise in Las Vegas, an after-party for the Pomona fighter was attended by Mayweather in the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel. Mosley was signing autographs on a table when Mayweather walked up.

"When are you going to fight me Shane?" asked Mayweather in front of a dozen or more onlookers.

Mosley answered "whenever you want to fight."

Now would be a perfect time for that fight.

They could fight sometime in June and the winner could then fight whoever wins between Hatton and Pacquiao in September or October.

Barrera-Khan will be must-see TV

Monday, March 9, 2009 | Print Entry

Your random thoughts …

• I know times are tough economically, but I believe Saturday afternoon's Integrated Sports pay-per-view card (4 ET) from Manchester, England, is worth the $24.95 asking price. The main event is as much of a crossroads fight as you will ever see as all-time great Marco Antonio Barrera, near the end of his career, tries to stave off the end against Amir Khan, the super prospect about whom there are so many questions after his stunning first-round knockout loss to Breidis Prescott in September. I think it's a fascinating main event. If Khan loses it's a total disaster. If Barrera loses, his already fading career is probably over. But if Khan wins, it's huge. And if Barrera wins, he's back in business for at least another fight.

The supporting fights on the pay-per-view are also interesting. I think Nicky Cook's junior lightweight title defense against Roman Martinez could be a terrific action fight and Enzo Maccarinelli's match with Ola Afolabi for an interim cruiserweight belt could produce some fireworks.

One thing that ought to enhance the telecast is that the U.S. pay-per-view feed will use the same one being used throughout the United Kingdom, where the card will also be televised on pay-per-view by Sky Box Office. I've been watching Sky Sports and Sky Box Office telecasts for years on DVDs and its broadcast team of Ian Darke and Jim Watt are top notch. Having them call the action from ringside should make the telecast a whole lot better than having it called in some studio off a monitor somewhere in the United States, where the broadcasters try their best but can't capture the atmosphere or excitement in the same way as if they were ringside.

• Did anyone notice that after each round of Joel "Love Child" Julio taking more and more leather from James Kirkland on Saturday that Julio's corner kept telling him he was doing well? Either they were blind or just lying to him.

• I've probably said this before but it is worth repeating: I need to see a fight between Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo.

Victor Ortiz, who was sensational in destroying Mike Arnaoutis on Saturday night on HBO, likely will be back May 2 on the Ricky Hatton-Manny Pacquiao HBO PPV undercard. However, I am not all that psyched about one of the proposed opponents, Steve Forbes. Sure, he's a durable fighter and a hell of a nice guy, but come on. That's not a fight that will excite anyone. The undercard of such a big show should be better. Golden Boy and Top Rank, which inflicted one of the worst pay-per-view undercards upon us in December (under Pacquiao-Oscar De La Hoya) owe us fights that HBO would buy for live HBO, especially since the promoters want our $50 in the worst way.

• Let's be honest: Robert Guerrero, despite a cut in the second round, simply quit against Daud Yordan.

• It's been quiet, but I sure hope that means that Golden Boy and Main Events are busy trying to get a fight between cruiserweight champ Tomasz Adamek and Bernard Hopkins worked out. The more I think about the fight, the more I like it.

• Point blank: Vernon Forrest is ducking Sergio Martinez and it's time for the WBC to order the long-overdue mandatory already.

• I love that Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey are going to fight, probably on HBO on June 13. You can rest assured that Madison Square Garden, hosting the fight the night before New York's annual Puerto Rican Day parade, will rock.

• I can't stop watching the Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz fight from Feb. 28. I was in Houston and I remember looking around during the first round and virtually the entire crowd was already on its feet. I think about that when I watch the HBO telecast over and over and hear Jim Lampley call it perfectly when he said during that incredible first round, "This is going to be a hellacious war."

• If you missed Mike Alvarado's sick 10th-round knockout of Emmanuel Clottey on Azteca America on Saturday night, go to YouTube.com and view it immediately. It was as crushing a knockout as you will ever see.

• I almost threw up when I received a press release from John Ruiz's publicist the other day. It said that Ruiz had again been named the mandatory challenger for the winner of the eventual heavyweight title bout between Nikolai Valuev and Ruslan Chagaev. I think this is about the 54th time Ruiz has been made mandatory by the WBA, an increasingly ridiculous organization that has had a fetish for Ruiz for a decade. Ruiz is a nice guy but seeing him in yet another undeserved title bout is just depressing. Enough is enough.

• When I heard that promoter Irish Ropes had canceled its March 16 pre-St. Patrick's Day card at the Madison Square Garden Theater I wasn't surprised. The reason given was that ticket sales were sluggish because of the economy. I would submit that perhaps ticket sales were awful because the card stunk. Andy Lee, who is not an attraction yet, against the totally shot Antwun Echols in the main event and Wayne McCullough, who has lost four of five, against the less-than-formidable Alex Becerra isn't a card I can envision many paying to see even in a robust economy. I'm not even sure New York officials would have licensed Echols or McCullough.

• So Edwin Valero changed trainers, parting ways with Kenny Adams and hiring Robert Alcazar. Talk about a weird move. It's like trading in a brand new Lexus to get back your old Camry with 180,000 miles on it.

DVD pick of the week: A Fight Freak in one of my chats last week made this suggestion and I went with it, delving into the archive for a fight from 19 years ago this month, March 17, 1990, to be exact, in Las Vegas. On that night Meldrick Taylor and Julio Cesar Chavez met to unify junior welterweight titles in what turned out to be one of the most memorable and controversial fights in boxing history. In a terrific action fight, Taylor was taking hard shots all night from Chavez but clearly winning in impressive fashion. But what separates boxing from all other sports is the ability for a fighter, no matter how badly he is trailing, to come back and win with one punch. You can't hit a 10-run homer in baseball or sink an 8-point shot in basketball. But Chavez hit the equivalent in boxing, knocking Taylor down in the 12th round. Although Taylor rose, referee Richard Steele, in a move still debated to this day, stopped the fight with two seconds left, giving Chavez the victory. For the record, I felt like Taylor should have been allowed to continue to claim his decision win.

I like Ortiz-Forbes. It's a good step up and we know Forbes is durable so we'll get to see Ortiz fight more than 2 rounds.

Ortiz wont get rid of Forbes , Forbes is a lot better than anyone Ortiz has Fought to date . But if he beats Forbes it says alot .

Berto-s next opponent wil probably be a Jello Pudding Cup his camp isnt gonna put him in tough for a while . I can Guarantee he will fight a small guy movingup from either 135 or 140 .

whew boy I aint even think about Angula Kirkland. Gad dammmn

to me Angulo got heavier hands but he gets Hit ALOT. but he's fundamentally more sound than Julio so he wouldnt just let James walk in without jabbing.
Man MAKE THAT FIGHT!

Edwin Valero Wants Juan Manuel Marquez

According to reports Edwin Valero is already looking sharp and is training hard at the South Coast Kick Boxing gym in Costa Mesa, California for his April 4th bout for the WBC 135 pound title against the hard punching Antonio Pitalua 46-3 (40) and weighed in at 140 ½ pounds on Saturday for the official WBC 30-day weigh. Valero's manager commented, "He's already in terrific shape; he could fight next week."

This past Thursday Valero sparred 10 rounds with fringe contender Josesito Lopez 23-3, "I had never seen Valero, but I was impressed. He's the complete package, he has it all. He's good on his feet, he has good stamina, he punches hard, he's a real accurate puncher and defensively he's solid, I was impressed," noted Henry Ramirez, Lopez's trainer.

When asked about the probable outcome of a potential clash between Valero and Juan Manuel Marquez, Josesito responded, "I don't know. That's would be a good one. That's a tough fight. Edwin is good, but Marquez is the first or second best pound for pound fighter in the world. It's hard to say."

Castillo commented, "Marquez is a good fighter, but I think Juan [Diaz] could have won the fight if he had more of a punch, but we would love to have a shot at Marquez. Valero would definitely win that fight, but he's moving up to 140 and I don't think he wants any part of Edwin. I can tell you that."

Carl Froch vs Jermain Taylor April 25

A household name in his native England, talented, undefeated Carl Froch will look to make a major statement - and enhance his reputation in America - when he defends his World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight title against one of the most highly regarded and recognizable fighters of this generation, former undisputed middleweight belt-holder Jermain Taylor, Saturday, April 25, on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING from Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket.

"Jermain Taylor is a great fighter and I am excited to have him make his SHOWTIME debut on April 25," said Hershman. "He's the more accomplished fighter and the better-known guy right now, but in Froch, he's facing the naturally bigger fighter and a man that has never lost. Our viewers have come to expect competitive fights month-in, month-out on SHOWTIME and this fight should be no different.

"The 168-pound weight division is one of the deepest and most exciting in boxing," Hershman continued. "Froch-Taylor is just one of many compelling matchups that this division has to offer." "I expect fireworks in this matchup," said DiBella Entertainment President Lou DiBella. "There is an aggressive, straight-ahead, rugged champion fighting a seasoned athletic warrior. It is a can't-miss fight and the title will change hands."

"This isn't a case of a young fighter on the way up taking advantage of a big name on the way out or two old timers cashing out with a big payday - this is a real fight. You've got two of the world's finest fighters, both at the peak of their powers and out to prove that they are amongst the best pound for pound fighters in the world," said Mick Hennessy, President of Hennessy Sports.

Angulo just walks right through them punches, Kirkland starts throwing wild that fight could be over in a flash

They both need a few more fights though.

You think Berto loses to Judah/Quintana Gunna?

berto definitely loses to Zab unless Zab falls apart, If Berto gets hit with the same shots from Zab, that Collazo was hittin him with, he's gonna becountin lights
Quintana- if Berto works the body, he can win.

Saturday night #%!!*@ sucked.

Notgonna go into it because i can't afford to lose another computer due to another Colombian.

And what do you know another colombian fighting this weekend as an underdog, oh boy i'm so excited.

Trying to be serious, i'm only mildly interested by the ShoBox thread. Bute showed against Andrade, that he has little interest in mixing it up with atough guy. And while Zuniga has shown that he has a good chin and is a good solid fighter, I just don't think he has the power at 168 to end Bute, regardless of what his record says and he isn't polished enough to cut off the ring for 12 rounds and wear him down. Granted there is always the chancethat Andrade took enough out of Bute at the end of that last fight that Bute may have lost a step or be a tad more vulnerable to the KO, but i doubt it.
