JRU names former King Bomber Meneses as new coach
Jose Rizal University (JRU) began its bid for a better finish next season when it named Vergel Meneses as the new coach replacing Ariel Vanguardia as the Heavy Bombers' mentor.

Meneses, a 14-year PBA veteran who last played for the Talk 'N Text franchise in 2006, is a former King Bomber but failed to lead the Mandaluyong-based squad to win the crown.

He now gets a second chance to end JRU's 37-year title drought after earning his coaching experience as one of Burger King coach Allan Gregorio's assistants in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL).

Derrick Pumaren is reportedly being eyed to assist Meneses at the JRU bench as team consultant.

Vanguardia took over from Cris Calilan just a week before the 2005 NCAA basketball season opened and steered the Bombers to a Final Four finish a year later.

From there, JRU went on land a seat in the 2008 finals where it came a win close of unseating then reigning titlist San Beda.

This season, Vanguardia and the Bombers failed to even make it to the finals after losing to San Sebastian in their winner-take-all Final Four match. The Stags went on to sweep the Red Lions in the Finals.

In other news, National University is reportedly wooing University of Santo Tomas coach Pido Jarencio to replace Bulldogs mentor Manny Dandan next season.

Dandan's contract as the Bulldogs' coach was terminated by the NU board right before Game 3 of the UAAP Finals between Ateneo and UE, which the Blue Eagles won.

If reports are true, Jarencio will be handling his second collegiate team in four years.

A highly-placed source from the Sampaloc-based squad, who requested anonymity, said Jarencio is the most likely candidate that could help them shed their whipping boy image and end more than five decades of frustration in the country's premier collegiate basketball tournament.

NU, however, surprised everyone when it barged in the Final Four in 2001 but the team went back to its losing ways after that.

Jarencio completed a Cinderella Finish with his former team when he led the Tigers to the 2006 UAAP crown.

But the former scoring ace of the Glowing Goldies during the mid 80s struggled in the next two seasons as UST couldn't keep up with the rest of the squads that have become stronger and better.

NU, which is now being bankrolled by the SM Group of Companies, reportedly tendered an offer Jarencio could not refuse, a salary more than twice bigger than what he receives with UST.

Pido is a goner...but his unemployment might not last that long...

If he has skills anywhere close to his father's, then he's the next Asoro. You know, a good player in an atrocious team.

Now that NU is being bank rolled by SM I think they have a good chance to lure good players and they can now afford to scoutpotential players as well.
If they can afford to offer that big amount of money to entice Pido for sure players will be lining up at Sampaloc this year. Cant wait to see and play on
their new gym, sana they have a mini SM hypermart inside
PCCL Sweet 16 cast nowcomplete
by ChristianSoler

DEFENDING champion De La Salle University took the last Philippine Collegiate Champions League Sweet 16 slot in convincing fashion by sweeping the SouthLuzon-Metro Manila zonal last November 14-16 at the University of Nueva Caceres Gym in Naga City, Camarines Sur.

The Green Archers, who played sans Kish Co, Bader Malabes and James Mangahas, booked their title defense ticket by an average winning margin of 39 points. On Day 1, the Green and White dismantled NCAA back-to-back titlists Don Bosco Technical College Greywolves, 98-44 before narrowly escaping UCLAA champions St.Francis of Assisi Colleges System Doves, 52-42. On the last playdate, DLSU cruised past Bicolandia powerhouse University of Nueva Caceres Greyhounds,91-38.

Joshua Webb led the UAAP sixth-placers with a 14.5 point per game clip, but missed out on the second matchup against the Doves. Peejay Barua, who suited upin all three games, averaged a decent 13 points. St. Francis, meanwhile, sported a 2-1 record, with DBTC's lone victory coming at the expense of thewinless Greyhounds.

The PCCL knockout round, which kicks off at the Ynares Gym in Pasig City on November 23, will feature six NCAA teams, five UAAP squads, three CESAFIschools, one NAASCU outfit and an ISAA representative in Lyceum of the Philippines University-Manila. The Pirates entered the field at the expense of theUniversity of Manila, who despite beating Lyceum was dislodged from the Sweet 16 due to a technicality.

Among the neophytes in this stage of the tournament, since being reformatted in 2007, are defending NCAA champion San Sebastian College-Recoletos andUniversity of Cebu.

Every game from the round of 16 to the best-of-three championship series will be broadcast live on Studio 23.

NCAA MVP Wilson quits JRU
By FRANCIS SANTIAGO

November 10, 2009, 7:05pm

In sympathy with basketball coach Ariel Vanguardia, who was fired by Jose Rizal University recently, the school's best player and this year's NCAA MostValuable Player John Wilson will forego his final year with the Bombers.

The 6-foot-1 Wilson, who set the league's scoring record of 48 points early this year, said he was hurt by the school's decision to sack Vanguardia -his coach of three years.

"Partly, iyon ang rason (of passing up his final year with JRU). Medyo nagtatampo ako (with JRU management)," Wilson said. "Coach Ariel gave us16-4 win-loss record. And that was the first time the school achieved that feat."

The school sacked Vanguardia after he failed to bring the Bombers back to finals this year although the Bombers made it to the Final Four and lost to eventualchampion San Sebastian in the semifinals.

Last year, under Vanguardia, the Bombers made it to the finals but lost to the San Beda in their best-of-three championship series, which extended theschool's title drought to 38 years.

Although Vanguardia, who also steered the Bombers to three Final Four appearances, had better than average record in his four years as coach, the school'sdecision to replace him showed the urgency placed by the university to end the title drought.

Vanguardia was replaced by ex-PBA star and former King Bomber Vergel Meneses the other day.

"I love my school pero sabi ko nga, we have to move on with the changes," Wilson said.

Wilson averaged 19.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals during the NCAA's 18-game elimination round this year.
