A fungus infection will likely keep Marcus Rios off the field this year. (USATSI)![]()
UCLA defensive back Marcus Rios is going to be out at least six months and possibly the entire 2013 season due to a fungus infection.
The rising sophomore has already undergone six surgeries to remove the infection and he will have a seventh surgery in the next two weeks. The infection Rios has is not only incredibly rare, but it has proven fatal in the past.
“It started as a sinus infection last October,” Rios told the Los Angeles Times. “Then they found the fungus infection behind my eye and beneath my brain...it's very rare. Only 12 people have ever had it and eight of them have died. Two others recovered and then died later.”
Rios takes antibiotics through a central catheter that's place in his arm, which does not allow him to run or participate in practice.
Rios played in only eight games for the Bruins last season, making three tackles.
