2014 New York Yankees season thread Vol. (84-78) .. Essential's Offseason thread coming soon

Tanaka is the # 4 starter. Nova # 3. Pineda # 5.

They want to split Tanaka from Kuroda because of similar pitching styles.

I think Tanaka eventually moves up in the pitching order. They also don't want him pitching too much with all his work already oveseas

Also, with Betances...I think he has to be in the pen, and with the FB he has, and curve, we may be looking at the next Joba

Yeah he's definitely permanently in the pen.

Last year in the minors he couldn't find the plate, moved him to the pen and he was dominate.

I have been really high on him because there's a 16 mph difference on his Fastball and Curve. His height is intimidating. If he finds the plate and is consistent in his location, he'll be un-hittable out of the pen. That's best case. More likely, he's probably a decent bullpen arm.

As for CC I think he'll be 92. Only getting to 94 occasionally. I read he may be trying a cutter to keep hitters from sitting on pitches.

Real happy to see Pindea grabbing the #5 spot, and I like Tanaka in at #4.

Me too. I've been waiting for this guy to pitch for what seems like years. But I have an uneasy feeling like he will get hurt again.

Pineda is a beast when he's healthy, straight monster stuff.

If he's our 5th starter, and everyone else does what they are capable of.

Oh lawd

:x

Hey so I know this is a weird request but I'll ask in case there is anyone out there willing to help a brotha out.

Are there any season ticket holders here?
There is a concert in Yankee stadium for a Latin artist and they gave presale codes to all season ticket holders. Unfortunately, I'm not one.

Would any of you be nice enough to hook me up with your password so that I can purchase the tix?
I wouldn't need any personal info.

Please PM if you can help.

For the record I'm a life long Yankee fan.
BX all day.

Go Yankees

Preston Claiborne, Scott Sizemore and Zoilo Almonte were optioned to Triple A, so they won't be on the roster.

Brendan Ryan will start on the DL.

Pretty much most of the roster is set.

Starting Pitching
1- C.C. Sabathia
2- Hiroki Kuroda
3- Ivan Nova
4- Masahiro Tanaka
5- Michael Pineda

Bullpen:
Spot Starter - David Phelps
Lefty Specialist - Matt Thorton (possibly 8th inning guy as well)
RHP - Dellin Betances
RHP - Shawn Kelly
RHP - Adam Warren
Closer - David Robertson

Lineup
1 - Ellsbury - CF
2 - Jeter - SS
3 - Beltran - RF
4 - Teixiera - 1B
5 - McCann - C
6 - Soriano - DH
7 - Johnson - 3B
8 - Roberts - 2B
9 - Gardner - LF

Bench:
C - Cervelli
3B - Nunez >:
OF - Ichiro

2 Roster spots left:
1 is between Vidal Nuno & Cesar Cabral. Will likely go to Nuno because he will give more innings
2 between Dean Anna & Yangervis Solarte. Anna has more experience so edge goes to him, but Solarte had a great spring and gives more flexibility as a Switch hitter (Regardless of who it is, the spot will go to Brendan Ryan when he gets off the DL

We have to go short bench because we have 5 OF's no point of carrying a 6th. 3 Catchers is pointless. If we carry Nunez as well as both Anna & Solarte, one guy will waste away on the bench.

Concerns:
1. Health. We really need Jeter, Roberts & Teixera to all play over 120 games. Teix more like 140+. We are paper thin in terms of offense in the infield, if any of those guys go out for an extended period of time, it's trouble.
2. Bullpen. D-Rob will be fine. Betances could surprise. Warren/Phelps/Nuno can eat innings. But without a clear 8th inning guy, and Thornton is not as good as Boone we could be looking at some issues late in the season.

Prediction - 92-70 T-1st AL East

I'm feeling good about this season fellas. Pitching is there and the offense looks like they're ready to do numbers.

I'm going to try to go to at least a couple of games this year.

Bullpen has been announced:

Phelps
Warren
Nuno
Kelly
Betances
Thornton
Robertson

We have 8 starters. Part of it was because we play 13 straight to begin the season, likely Warren or Nuno may be going back and forth between MLB and Minors to bring up relievers throughout the season.

Alfredo Aceves was signed to a minor league deal.

Infielders haven't been told if they've made the team. Final two spots will be between Nunez, Anna & Solarte. With one of the two being sent down when Ryan is ready.

Dean Anna made the team

Final Spot between Solarte & Nunez.. Please pick Solarte.. Please pick Solarte.. Please pick Solarte.

The reasoning is logical: Nuñez is on the 40-man roster and though Solarte is not, he can trigger an opt-out clause in his contract if he does not make the 25-man roster for a spot on another team’s 25-man roster, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person requested anonymity to speak freely on the matter.

Therefore, the Yankees could see the competition’s loser leave for another franchise. To avoid defection, the Yankees would need to clear a 40-man roster spot to keep Solarte and option Nuñez to Triple-A. Trading Nuñez, or another player on the 40-man roster, or designating a player on the 40-man roster is then rational.

We'll know by 3PM.

Solarte makes the team over Nunez, who has been optioned to triple-A.

Smartest move. Kinda feel bad for Nunez, but I'm sure he'll be called up right away if Solarte isn't a good look.

The Yankees final roster decision came as stunning news, both to the player who was picked and the one who was not.

Yangervis Solarte came into camp as a 26-year-old with no big league experience, no familiarity among the Yankees coaching staff, and no real prospect hype or attention. He’d played in two different organizations and never made it past Triple-A. Seemed like a nice player — switch hitter; defensive versatility; much-needed infield depth — but Solarte’s Triple-A numbers weren’t overwhelming, and he seemed to be just another guy. Technically he had a shot, but realistically, his chances weren’t good.

Then he hit .429/.489/.571. He had the Yankees third-highest OPS this spring.

“It’s been nine years that I’ve been waiting for this,” he said. “I have goosebumps still.”

Eduardo Nunez came into camp as a 26-year-old with parts of four seasons in the big leagues. He’d been the Yankees primary shortstop last season, he’d been a familiar utility man since 2010, and he’d played well enough down the stretch last season that the Yankees spent all winter talking about him as a definite platoon option at third base. Inconsistent? Yes. But with good speed that might have played well off the bench. He seemed to be a legitimate favorite to win at least a part-time job this spring. He will instead go to Triple-A.

“We all love Nuney,” manager Joe Girardi said. “There’s something about his character and who he is that just makes him a guy that everyone roots for and wants to see him do well and have a great career, but it’s difficult. … Obviously he’s very disappointed and upset, and I understand that. He feels that he’s a big league player, and I understand that too. I mean, he’s had some success in the big leagues. But it’s a hard time for him right now.”

There’s no doubt that Solarte outhit Nunez this spring. Girardi said he also liked the fact that Solarte had been primarily a second baseman and third baseman in the minors. The Yankees see Dean Anna as their backup shortstop, meaning this final bench role is going to mostly backup at second and third.

“He’s played a little bit more second and third than Nuney has in his career,” Girardi said. “We thought he won the spot in spring training. We talk about open competitions for those spots, for bullpen spots, for the fifth starting spot, and we felt that guys won competitions here.”

The Yankees final four roster spots — Solarte, Anna, Dellin Betances and Vidal Nuno — each went to a player who’d never made an Opening Day roster. Solarte and Anna, the team’s two backup infielders, have no major league experience. Anna had never even been in big league spring training until this year. Solarte is still not on the 40-man roster (the Yankees will have to find a way to add him, but they don’t have to do that immediately).

Although Anna can play third base, Girardi indicated that Solarte will probably be the primary backup to Kelly Johnson. Although Solarte can play shortstop, Anna will definitely be the backup to Derek Jeter. Girardi said he would feel comfortable with either player at second base.

“This is a dream come true, outside of having my family and my children,” Solarte said. “This is a new beginning. I have great happiness. Now I have to work hard. This is when the work actually starts.”

- The Astros have announced that they’ll honor Jeter with a pregame ceremony on Wednesday. Both Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens are scheduled to be there. “It was good to see Rock last year when Mo got honored out there,” Jeter said. “It’s always good to see those guys, especially Andy, being with Andy for so long. Rocket as well. I don’t know what they have planned, but I look forward to seeing them.”

Clemens sighting ^ should be interesting.

- Jeter: “We have a lot of talent, but you have to perform on the field. That’s the bottom line. Everyone tries to have predictions of where they feel each team is going to finish every year, but you have to perform on the field. I like the guys that we have. We’re healthy for the most part leaving spring training; that’s always important. The key for most teams is to stay healthy, but you’ve got to do your job on the field. It’s a long season and it takes a little while before you really get a great feel for what the team is capable of doing, but I’m pretty optimistic about this group.”

Glad they kept Anna. He'll be playing somewhere on the infield permanently by June.

I'm glad everyone is picking them 3rd or 4th this year despite the additions. Still think Drew would have fit perfectly and they already gave up picks so I don't see the use in trying to keep em now. Think this is the year they finally pick up Lee.

Makes them underdogs.

But I don't think there really is a clear #1. Red Sox are worse. Rays are the same. Yankees have gotten better.

I think it will come down to the last week. Each team 90-93 wins.
