I remember Zach Lowe writing about this, him and people around the league fearing th game would be just a bunch of three point shooters with no much diversity team to team.

I see...
Now what I don't understand is how it's bad for basketball that you have to actually learn how to play basketball in order to survive . There was once a bunch of slow unathletic white guys that got phased out the game. Now there will be some tall athletic unskilled goobers that get clipped out. Survival of the fittest
Did you just listen to the Bill Simmons podcast?
I can't disagree more with this.
Duncan and Aldridge do just fine offensively.
Blake and DeAndre consistently are parts of top regular season offenses.
No one thought AD was unplayable cause he didn't shoot 3s last year.
The problem with Simmons is that he can't and doesn't shoot FROM ANYWHERE that isn't a layup or a floater. That would be a problem in any era unless you're a Shaq type. It limits his ceiling but doesn't make him unplayable.
Put Simmons next to a stretch 5 and he's fine.
And the league is making Tony Allen types disappear by the year.Big O was right, only chance you have vs Steph right now is to pick him up full court. It can't be one of your best offensive players tho, gotta be a Tony Allen type of player.
thing is...tony allen types...its incredible hard to find a plockdown defender that can also score for you. i mean we have kawhi, but steph gave him 30 during commercial break. So then if you do end up with a tony allen, you end up with the same issue that memphis and boston had, having to play 4 on 5 on offense, and letting the player tony is guarding not have to guard him so they can bring the double every possession. There are few good two way players in the L. and then 94 feet or hell, even 47 ft of lockdown defense is difficult af for even the most conditioned. dudes will burnout. plus, all good defender bite on crossovers and pumpfakes. its part of defense. you have to believe that the player is going to go when they look like they're going. if you gamble and assume they're just crossing you and you stay put, and they actually do go that way, you've just been beaten and are out of position. just look at the MJ/AI thing. everybody knows mike was a monster defender. He had no choice but to bite on those crosses. It's up to the offensive player to sell them.
All of this plus what people fail to realize is that these are MONSTERS. Playing organized ball coming up and just in general there are guys I'm sure we played against and you like man this dude is nice it's nothing I can do to stop this cat. so just imagine a dude a million times better. There is no locking up a Superstar NBA player. All this he can or can't guard a player is really invalid because your talking about guarding an ELITE player. You can only hope to contain these cats. And to be real nobody in the L is locking up like that. A cat might have a bad shooting night but if he still getting 18-20 did you really lock him up?
Passing is his only above average skill, maybe rebounding but then again his size and athletic plays a big part in that like most dudes. Dribbling is below average, shooting is, well u know. Now his passing is amazing I'll give him that, amazes me sometimes.Freeze is the homie but for real... LeBron has no skill? Really, he can't dribble? What about his passing ability? His court vision?
My fellow Laker fans.
no you have to shoot 3's. Shooting 32% from 3 is good enough to justify letting them fly. is that learning to play basketball?
the game is constantly changing. Used to be a big mans game. Then a dunkers game. then big men again. then guard game. now pg and 3 point shooter game. Give it time. It'll change again. There's no rule, the game changes with the talent of the personnel.
Cause he got waived for Jason frickin Thompson. And if your hometown team doesn't think you are good enough idk what team else will pick him up.So why is Bennett about to be on his way out of the NBA for good?
1. trust I know about Simmons limitations, i've been arguing in the draft rhead all year.
2. Simmons can't protect the rim, you aren't winning anything with simmons at 5.
3. you think its good that AD is shooting 3's now? You think thsts the best use of his legth, athleticism, talent?
4. The Blake Deandre is my point, the thing is a struggle, and bogs down all the time in the playoffs. and they run better without blake.
This. Just this. And only This.the game is constantly changing. Used to be a big mans game. Then a dunkers game. then big men again. then guard game. now pg and 3 point shooter game. Give it time. It'll change again. There's no rule, the game changes with the talent of the personnel.

You are being way too optimistic.
the math is obvious there is basically one way to play that maximizes expected value. that not like it was before, even if it was a big man league, there was more varitey in the offense and personel in the 80's.
but now. spread pick and roll with 4 shooters.
its only going to become worse as the teams become smarter, and the incentives for young players become stronger.
This is way overblown. Yeah you need shooting but when you're just shooting 3s for the sake of shooting them, you're gonna struggle. The Wizards had Kris Humphries try to execute this strategy early in the year. It was dumb.
The Spur starting bigs could easily shoot 34% from 3 (or whatever the magic number is to analytically justify it) yet they have a combined 0 made for the season.
Upping the pace and chucking 3s is an easy way to run your offense. Doesn't mean it'll be successful. More importantly, it's not the only way to run the offense.
bro up until last season the narrative was 'jump shooting teams don't win championships'. up until then it was believe you needed a presence in the paint to be effective. Things change. It will change solely because teams may not be able to match finding 3 point shooters so they'll have to find other ways to be effective. Things change all of the time, even if it is subtle. Just look at the discussion we're having now. The game moved towards a 3 point shooting front because better shooters came in the league and coaches started utilizing the more in the offense. But it can only continue that way if the pool of talent is the same in the future. Amazing 3 point shooters dont grow on trees. You have decent good and great. Then you have subcategories, like shooters that can pull off the dribble or if they just have set shots. Variety will come back around.
Right? Let's just eliminate reach-in fouls and dribbling while we're at itI'm not for any rule change that would benefit ppl who can't shoot. That's just crazy talk.
Just now hearing Kyrie hasnt wanted to be in Cleveland for months... he shoulda tried to get that trade then. CP3 for Irving woulda been interesting for both teams.
