When 2 teams that wouldn't have had a shot at the Trophy if not for the Playoff, are actually playing for the Trophy this year, I'd say the system was a success.

The undefeated defending national champions HAD to be in the playoff.... it doesn't matter if they struggled all season. If they weren't in it the playoff would have been a total farce. TCU didn't even win their conference.
