So sad... RIP to Tony Gwynn.

One of his most cherished possessions was a Ted Williams book on hitting. Seeing the two of them at the All-Star game a few years back was one of my best memories in the sport. He was one of the most classy guys on/off the field.

also its pretty crazy given how fat he was, that his average was that high, unlike guys like Ichiro who could always stave off slumps by legging out infield singles.

read this during my lunch break and it really bummed me out. Way too young.

Dude was batting with a toothpick and still putting up crazy numbers :hat

RIP.

best career batting average by any player post WWII

amazing how little he struck out considering he always watched the first pitch.

he could've been the THE MAN if he followed the money to a bigger market team

thanks for the memories

Love this move from the Mariners. :hat

Like Babe Ruth said in The Sandlot, "Heroes get remembered, but legends NEVER die."

Late to the thread, but R.I.P. to one of the greats in Tony Gwynn.

Such a well spoken, caring man for the game and outside of the field. I can't say I saw much of him play due to my age, but I know he was one of the guys in his prime (and full career) to play the game clean, and that you have to admire him for to put up the absurd stats that he did.

Crazy stat that a friend of mine told me that I couldn't believe until I read it:

In 1995, Gwynn struck out only 15 times in 535 at-bats. That's insane. As Aceball Stats points out, 27 current MLB players have already struck out than more than 15 times in June.

:eek

^ Cool read .

In 2,440 career games, Gwynn had only 34 multi-strikeout games. So, the odds were better that Gwynn would get four hits than striking out twice. Let that sink in.

:eek

Crazy part of it to me is how the strike zone is constantly changed, and one bad call by an ump can really screw you over
