Your logic just doesn't make any sense. If you are down by 9 and kick a FG, you still have to score at least 6 points to get back in the game. So if you think Lamar is bad, you are less likely to get to the red zone again and you need to utilize every red zone possession like it's even more important. Which is why going for it on 4th when you actually got there is an obvious, and statistically obvious choice.
As you can see now, even had they made the FG there the three points are barely even meaningful.
