Jazz/Mavs later today. The Jazz offense has actually held up just fine in the playoffs. Don has turned into an elite scorer, an okay facilitator, has 3 shooters around him at all times, two guys in Bojan & Clarkson who can dribble & score without him & a lob threat in Rudy. You can’t help off of anyone, several guys in that lineup can break you down. It’s very difficult to guard. Nearly 120 offensive rating in back to back playoff runs. ELITE offensive production.

But there are two sides on the floor  This roster is completely broken. The drivers of their now elite offense - Don, Conley, Bojan, Clarkson - are some of the absolute worst defenders in basketball. You don’t need a crossover, hesi, between the legs, in n out, etc to get past them. Straight line drives. Pitiful. Traffic. Cones.

Rudy is a historically great rim protector, so those guys get beaten off the dribble & it’s fine on most nights….. in the regular season  In the playoffs the gameplans are different.

Rudy would be more of a (lob) threat against smalls with a creative playmaker (Luka/CP/Bron/Harden). But the Jazz guards don’t look for him consistently enough against small lineups, and he doesn’t have much of a post game. No hook shots or anything that we’ve seen consistently. Let alone vision if you were to double him.

So Ty Lue (and now J Kidd) had the bright idea to go 5 out. When the Jazz have the ball, Rudy can’t make me pay in the paint.

When I have the ball, I can hunt one of those 4 victims (Don, Conley, Bojan, Clarkson) and drive to the rim. Every. Single. Possession.

So after the guards are beaten. Rudy Gobert, or whoever the backup center is, has 2 choices.

He can follow his instinct & protect the rim:

Hernangomez with a terrible gamble, gives up the lane, Gobert protects the rim & it’s impossible to get back out to 30 feet

Brunson gets half a step on House on the cut, Gobert protects the rim, impossible to recover 30 feet out. Green is 36% from 3 this year, albeit low volume but nobody is in the vicinity

Spence straight line drives on Conley, Gobert protects the rim, his man at 30 feet runs a DHO this time

Spence hunts Clarkson, Gober preemptively gives help, and doesn’t even try to run Green off the line

Jalen hunts Donovan, has the corner 3 if he wants it  You see the backscreen preventing any close out. Kidd is explicitly scheming for this shot

Another drive on Don, more Gobert help, another open 3. Maxi with the awareness to pop after the DHO, knowing Rudy is not coming out there & Don would likely be late on the switch.

Conley in a light morning jog, points for someone to pick up HIS man which would result in a layup  he’s now out of position & Green attacks his closeout & he takes a weak swipe at all. Terrible stuff. Gobert protecting the rim again, Bullock sitting right in the corner waiting  You see the backscreen preventing any closeout

You see Royce oneale trying his very best here  he doesn’t wanna concede the switch with Clarkson, stays in a 1 man zone until Bullock cuts to the corner, he switches with Gobert, but Gobert still has to protect the rim, and Bullock is in the corner for the kickout. Again Bertans setting a backscreen preventing the close out. Kidd is consciously manufacturing this shot

Spence sees that Utah isn’t even matched up yet  He hits it ahead, Another drive, more Gobert rim protection, another corner 3.

Hunts Clarkson, straight line drive, Rudy sinks, open corner, no backscreen needed this time

whiteside like Rudy isn’t comfortable defending outside of 5 feet, Maxi gets a clean look here off of a basic V cut

Or Rudy can fight the urge, stay home, & challenge his teammates to contain the ball:

Brunson hunts Mitchell, who doesn’t even get a hand up on a man who had 40 in the last game

Brunson gets bojan in a cross match, blow by, floater. Easy

Clarkson couldn’t wait to stare at the ball as soon as his mans stops moving  He doesn’t keep his head on a swivel, completely loses his man on the cut

They hunt Clarkson, line drive layup

Bojan gets hunted this time, another layup

Spence straight line drive on Conley, Gobert stays home, foul

Bojan with a better hedge this time, Jalen doesn’t try the pass instead kicks out to Spence. Donovan makes no attempt to run him off the line…. And gets blown by anyway  Hassan stays home & it’s a layup. Just terrible effort.

Brunson hunts Don, House gives help to prevent a blowby but you’re not supposed to help one (non-skip) pass away

Spence hunts Don, Rudy late on the rotation this time, layup

Spence gets Don on a cross match, drives again, Rudy stays home, layup

Brunson hunting Conley, he tries to hedge, ends up screening his own man

So layups or wide open corner 3s. Over and over over again. The two most coveted shots in basketball  This is how you get in a shootout in back to back playoff runs against 2 teams missing their best player

Quin Snyder doing everything he can with this roster.

He tries to have the victim hedge on the pick instead of accepting the switch:

Spence hunting Clarkson once again, Clarkson trying to hedge now  but Royce doesn’t get back home. They’re in hell

Clarkson trying to hedge again, Spence hits DFS on the roll, Gobert protects the rim, corner again.

Bojan with the worst hedge you’ll ever see  Jalen gets right to the cup, Hassan has similar weaknesses to Rudy. Another 3

Quin benches Rudy & tries to go 5 out:

Quin goes small but with Paschall at the 5 but with Clarkson/Mitch/Bojan all on the floor they’re handing Spence a mismatch without him having to hunt for it. He draws Clarkson & Utah tries the Thibs’ strong side defense from 2011... which does not work against today’s 5 out lineups  Maxi just cuts & sits right behind him  Paschall stays home on the corner shooter instead of sinking, so Maxi’s completely unguarded. Easy o board.

Small with Paschall, they trap Brunson, they reverse the ball, Bojan (just like Don ) doesn’t run his man off the line, doesn’t stop the drive.

Quin Snyder tries going small with Paschall, but now you have no rim protection. Spence hunts him, & shows how undisciplined of a defender Paschall is.

Another Spence drive, they get a miss but without Gobert, you’re also weak on the glass  You see that’s Donovan’s man that he doesn’t box out  He’s one of the worst defenders in all of basketball.

Small with Paschal, nobody used to protecting the rim & nobody rotates , straight line drive layup

There are no answers here. Every player has a fatal flaw, and getting killed by flawless execution by the Mavs who have them at their mercy. You’re seeing similar great decision making from the 76ers as well.

Space the floor, find your mismatch, attack the rim. Wait for the 2nd man to come & you kick out, or you finish if the 2nd man doesn’t come. Every. Single. Possession. Playoffs are all about finding a mismatch & exploiting it everytime.

Add it all up & there are just no “adjustments” for the Jazz to make.

Hopefully the front office sees that this is THEIR fault, and not Quin Snyder’s. Lest we forget the Jazz were the most boring team to watch with sub 100 offensive ratings in the playoffs just a few years ago.
You give him tools, he’ll get the most out of them.

At this point the Jazz have to hope that they win shootouts while they’re giving up the 2 most coveted shots in basketball. Very slim chance.

This is literally a re-run of the Clippers series so changes will be made in the off-season. Who knows what they are tho

I’m not sure there’s an NBA superstar (or has been in the modern era) that truly meets that definition up there.

There’s levels to it; some guys are more outwardly braggadocious than others. Some guys are good at appearing very humble in interviews. But, IMO, they’re very aware of their own greatness. And I think it has to be that way for someone to get to that level of achievement.

Now THAT I agree with. A certain level of well-deserved confidence that can come off as arrogance? Sure. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Christopher Emmanuel Paul is humble?
we know he's an ******* but he can be humble too. i'd say bringing up Book as the star/mvp of the suns when he hasn't played in 6 qtrs after Chris carrying them in two 4th qtr wins would qualify.
