I think he thought the run would count if he lasted long enough in the rundown, which as far as I know is incorrect. Even if he were tagged.

Yeah there were two outs. Step on the bag, inning over.
Even if there was 1 out (which hopefully is what the first baseman thought), he ran the pickle play so nonchalantly and waited until the runner was midslide to try and throw him out at home
That was pretty disgraceful. When I first started watching the clip I thought it was minor league at best.
