Senior Nike executive criticized for ties to sneaker resell business
Matthew KishFeb 27, 2021

A high-ranking Nike executive is facing criticism over connections to a sizable sneaker reselling business.

Bloomberg Businessweek reported in a Thursday cover story that Joe Hebert, son of Nike vice president and general manager of North America Ann Hebert, used a credit card in Ann Hebert’s name to purchase sneakers for his resell company, West Coast Streetwear.

Among the details in the story is the description of a single morning when Hebert charged $132,000 to a credit card for limited-edition sneakers.

Nike late Thursday said Hebert "disclosed relevant information" about West Coast Streetwear to Nike, but the sportswear giant declined to answer additional questions as criticism mounts about Nike's ability to police increasingly frenzied resell activity, which makes it hard for collectors to get the most coveted shoes at retail price and risks souring consumers on the brand.

In an unsigned email to the Business Journal, Portland-based West Coast Streetwear declined comment on the Bloomberg story. Ann Hebert did not respond to a LinkedIn message.

Many Nike shoes fetch more than retail price on the secondary market. The dynamic has created a lucrative market for resellers who are able to get the most prized shoes using industry connections, access to discounted sneakers and online robots that jump digital lines.

In the Bloomberg story, Joe Hebert said he'd never received inside information from his mother and her position near the top of Nike makes her removed from the sort of business he runs.

In the story, Joe Hebert describes how he uses a 15-person team of "cooks" to snag large quantities of popular shoes online by using software programs. He also said he gets sneakers from sale racks at retail outlets and through industry connections.

"If you know the right people here, this is the city to sell shoes," Joe Hebert said, according to Bloomberg. The right people "can give you access to stuff that, like, a normal person would not have access to."

West Coast Streetwear's Instagram account also offers subscription services that range from $50 a month to $100 a month. One of the subscription services is described as a way to help members find discounted shoes.

Late Thursday, Nike provided the Business Journal a short statement in response to written questions about Ann Hebert’s connections to West Coast Streetwear, which formally does business as WCS LLC.

“In accordance with company policy, Ann Hebert disclosed relevant information related to WCS LLC,” Nike said. “West Coast LLC is independently owned and operated, is not a Nike partner and has no commercial affiliation with Nike or the direct buying or selling of Nike products.”

On Friday, the Business Journal emailed Nike additional questions about Ann Hebert’s connections to West Coast Streetwear. The Business Journal’s questions noted that West Coast Streetwear lists a Southwest Portland home owned by Ann Hebert as its "primary place of business" on its most recent annual report filed with the state.

The Business Journal, in its email to Nike, also noted West Coast Streetwear’s Instagram account includes numerous photos of large lots of shoes next to a house that appears to be the Southwest Portland home owned by Ann Hebert.

In one photo on the West Coast Streetwear Instagram account, a person is seen sitting next to more than 50 pairs of the Jordan 5 Retro Off-White Black, one of the most coveted sneakers of 2020. The shoe released for $225 last summer and sold out within seconds. It now fetches more than $600 on the secondary market, according to StockX.com.

In response to the Business Journal's follow-up questions, Nike provided the Business Journal an additional statement, saying, “Nike has no business relationship with Joe Hebert."

The Bloomberg story published the same day that trolls disrupted the virtual bidding in the annual Doernbecher Freestyle auction and the same month that industry publication Complex reported on allegations that a coveted Air Jordan 1 release in Florida was "backdoored," meaning it was marked up and sold to friends and family, rather than to the general public at retail price.

An online message board frequented by Nike employees by Saturday had more than a dozen anonymous comments critical of Ann Hebert's apparent ties to West Coast Streetwear.

Sources who know Ann Hebert describe her as well-liked and respected, but they say the Bloomberg story describes a troubling conflict of interest at a time when Nike is investing in ways to combat resell profiteers.

In April 2020, Nike named Ann Hebert head of its business in North America. She’s responsible for sales, marketing, merchandising and all product categories in North America, which accounts for about 41% of Nike’s annual sales. She's a 25-year company veteran.

While on paper the company is based out of the Southwest Portland house, it operates out of a Portland warehouse.

In August, the YouTube sneaker show the "DNA Show" posted a video tour of West Coast Streetwear's Portland warehouse. The tour was given by a person identified as "Joe."

Joe said the warehouse, which holds an estimated 5,000 pairs of sneakers, had recently moved to Portland from Eugene and tripled in size.

In the video, Joe describes road trips across the country to buy discounted Nike merchandise at retail outlets that he brings back to Portland and sells online for a profit.

When asked what got him into the resell business, Joe says he started reselling non-Nike streetwear in high school and quickly realized it was a lucrative business with "endless possibilities and room for profit."

I saw that part too but I didn’t know if that meant he’s actually using her connects, or if they were just critical of the mother/son and VP/reseller relationship. Whatever though lol

grabbed for retail... joints decent 💨

especially with such a major reseller and close family that works for the company that your reselling for
his mom is vice president of nike

my problem is not the reselling but the problem is he's bragging about using bots and the connects he has
you got this type of pull keep it to yourself

if this was just some run of the mill reseller with no job and no true connects besides some footlocker employees backdooring it would be business as usual
My problem is the reselling. Everything else--the conflicts of interest, the Nike family connection, etc.--it just icing on the cake.
