EVERY socal person i know who has moved to NYC for school/work has said that socal>NYC in everything minus overpriced food, loud and rude people, and snow (y'all got us beat on that, i'll give ya that).

Surfing, ski/snowboarding all within a 4 hours drive, still in the same state. 
SoCal - Entourage...beaches, nuff said.
Norcal - Oakland, snowboarding, temperate weather for those more inclined to cold but never goes below 50'F. Staple of progression. Silly diverse. The only city in America where for the most part people truly just don't give a damn about superficial things like how you look or SES. 

and also hands down of the best selection of Universities America has to offer.

I been to a lot of states including NY(NYC) and grew up somewhere completely different before I chose to move here. 
Just my opinion.
