ok i gotcha.

Would the pinging be like when im accelerating and you feel the engine jumping ? Cause i think i feel that now and i have premium in there.

nah, I know older Asian folks who do the same, they are just ignorant and don't know the difference.

I'm not sure about the "ping" terminology but a higher octane rating (ie. Premium) is necessary to prevent engine knock. This is just a roughsummary but basically the engine puts in more work when it doesn't have to, resulting in more gas burned without the extra benefit. Honestly, it'sabout $3.00 extra per tank. It's not a wallet breaker or anything.

To be honest, i'm not a car buff, and I still don't understand fully what engine knock is, but i'd rather take the safe route and pay the extra$2-3 per fill-up and protect the $20k car.

Low-end torque isn't great on the TL but I kinda like the "heavy" feel. I enjoy cruising and driving comfortably rather than wasting gas andtrying to look cool and saying VTEC JUST KICKED IN YO out loud.

BTW...congrats on the pickup!..and if you're looking into rims, check out RonJons. They're ridiculous. I'd get 'em but driving in NYC makes itnot worth it.

justhotkicks: pinging and knock are just alternative terms in this case. For those that require a scientific explanation *deep breath*

The higher octane fuel, characterized by its greater number of chemical bonds, is required because it does not combust as easily as regular unleaded. Why a carlike the TL with a higher compression ratio engine requires this is because of the environment the fuel is under. The greater compression makes for a moreeasily combustable environment...when you run lower octane fuels, they tend to combust earlier (typically when you're flooring it) and that situation wherethe timing of the combustion is not in sync with the rest of the engine is what causes that characteristic "pinging" or "knock." High compratio engines can also make greater power with premium fuel because, as suggested by basic chemical laws, the greater the input then the greater the output. The extra bonds in high octane fuel require more energy to break, but once the more numerous bonds are broken, they deliver a greater amount of energy.

K sorry for that lengthy if even coherent explanation, I just felt like typing out something ...I'm bored as hell since my break started.

for the most part they are one of the best daily drivers. great car all around. great styling, 300hp etc.

The only problem I have so far is when i go like over 60 miles an hour i hear a noise coming from the window like the wind is trying to come in the car. I also noticed today one of my panels on the back of the car is loose at the top.

Also do I have to use premium gas or can i use the mid grade ?
how much did you pay, if you don't mind me asking?

i saw a silver, 07' with 21,xxx miles from a private seller the other day for $21,000...best deal i've seen so far in this area.

ya'll clownin houston like he put some 26" dub floaters on his car, the car looks fine, but the "JDM/Tuner/flush" look works better than bigwheels on these cars

I'd push it either way

I was seriously considering buying one as well. Should I go with a certified used or just a used? Does anyone know the difference?

any car that gets rims that are 'open' (see example above) needs to get a bbk. it looks hella wierd and funny seeing rims with stock brakes on them

I got mine for 23,900. I got it certified. If its certified it comes up with whatever is left on the limited warranty for the car when it was new and comeswith an extra year of the bumper to bumper warranty. Plus you still get the 7 yr / 100,000 powertrain warranty from when the car was bought new.

I would get a TL in a heartbeat.

I drive a CL and I love it.

Every Acura I've ever been in has been nice.

And RonJon rims are nice. IDK what you guys are talking about them being ugly for?

i remember someone mentioning on here that you should never get one before 05 or 03 because the transmissions had problems or something so you should be fine in that department.
i've been looking to buy an 03' type S recently but now that i hear this idk anymore

As far as 2nd gen's go

the 99 and the 03's are the most reliable

00, 01, and 02 have major transmission problems

cool, sounds like you got a good deal...

price is the only thing holding me back right now...not sure how much i want to put in a car, since i may be back in school next year.

the extended warranty is sort of a catch 22, you really want to have it if anything goes wrong, but if your car is fine throughout the warranty period, you'll feel like you wasted your money. i currently drive a 97' camry (my first car) with 181,xxx miles on it, which i purchased in 2003 from a privateseller, with 70,xxx miles on it for $9,700...so far i have only put about $1,200 into it besides routine maintenance...if the acura is anywhere near asreliable as the camry has been, then the extended warranty wouldn't be necessary, buttttt you never know what might happen.

I been trying to buy a car before the year ends and I seen a couple of 04 TL's here in Los Angeles for about 12-13gs. I read earlier where someone saidit's best to cop 06 and beyond....besides the mileage, how come? My budget will be at 14gs and I don't plan on financing the purchase mainly cuz Ican't stand paying bills I'd rather just pay cash and get it over with.
