It's all just stock per capita and store traffic in the area.. so NYC does have a ton more pairs, but also a ton more people going for it. I wouldn't stress too much over it.

Hell yeah man my wife calls me crazy I call it exactly what you call it dedication. I use sky miles so it's free. But from DC to Orlando it about $130 if i wanted to pay so you still come out less than resell rental car was $23 I already booked it. Just waiting for the foot apps to open
