More than likely they were returns. You can return almost ANY nike product to a nike outlet and get your money back or a GC (if purchased elsewhere).

I remembered seeing the same last four digits on a friends pair.
I might be off a number or two, but I believe the last four for each size ended in this sequence:
2383=size 8
3144=size 8.5
3458=size 9
3502=size 9.5
8286=size 10
8835=size 10.5
8897=size 11
9382=size 11.5
9399=size 12
9696=size 13
2245=size 14
