Don't think people defended it, we just felt we'd be able to get some value for him if we matched and looked to trade mid-season or next season as opposed to letting him go for nothing.
Dude would have created too many problems in the locker room though. Not saying he's a bad guy or a head case, he obviously isn't either. But the fact that JR took a paycut, and the media started the whole "whose team, Melo or Lin" thing, and then you'd have a faction of people who wouldn't have appreciated the way he tried to sneak a little extra paper.
He's a pg though with a solid roster of players to dish to with the acquisition of Dwight. I'd be happy if he does well, but for whatever reason it's also funny to me when he doesn't.

Personally I defended dudes smarts for getting that paper. He had to get every penny he could out of Linsanity. I'm pretty sure Lin knew he blew his load and had no second round in him.
