AVG seems to work pretty good for me.

Don't forget no script and ad block plus firefox add ons.

I had a nasty virus before I referred to this http://www.elitekiller.com/malware.htm cleared it up though took some time.

for antivirus software, nod32 is good and also kaspersky.

for Spyware/malware Malwarebytes and superantispyware are good

I used all of them at one point and they did pretty well in protecting my computer.
