any dj's here? what equipment you using and what you spinning?

Nice post JuJu.

When you start playing out, do a lot of gigs for free until you're confident enough with your skills.
Also with scratching, begin learning the basic techniques and master them BEFORE you get to the more advanced scratching techniques like crabs.
Remember, be patient and practice as much as you can. Things like this take time.

Yo..Any Dj's in NYC??

okay I have a question for yall. what do you put your vinyls in?
I think i made a thread on here asking this but i dont remember. It's the only gift idea I have for my dad he has like 100 or 200 plus records andthey're just in a box.
I want something like an armoire (no idea how to spell that)

and I like that picture up there. I wish we had techno clubs here

Bump...thank you to whoever stated Serato doesn't have a BPM counter, I sure as hell wouldn't have gone through the BS of BPM-ing thousands of songs ifit did.

Thething with club DJing is the nonstop requests and %+##, but I've learned after your first couple times at the same club, people will respect the factthat you don't take requests and if they dig you, they'll pretty much dance to anything you play as long as you can blend it well with the rest of yourset. My problem is that I DJ at Angels & Kings NYC (Pete Wentz's bar) on saturdays, and the saturday crowd is the billboard top 20 crowd.

had a ddm4000 w/ 2 cdj 400s, sold that setup for a ns7, now im using a vci-300 w/ serato itch. i live the convenience of being able to just throw it in a bagand haul it off to wherever im going...

DJ Danyo from the DMV area checking in.

MBP 13''
Pioneer 800s MKIIs
Crappy mixer
Serato.

Looking into switching to vinyl reeeeeal soon.

Not that many techno/electro/club DJ's out here. Mostly latin heads.

I wish I had the duckets for a Rane mixer, and I can't get big speakers because I don't have a car, which is why I only do clubs for the time being, unless I have friends bring their speakers to my gigs.

i love it. i'm not much of a scratch dj, but the scratches register just fine. the output is kinda low tho. i would recommend connecting it to an externalmixer if you plan on dj'ing at a larger venue...

whutp. djcasper checking in. been djing for about 8 yrs. open format. play alittle bit of eveything, i live in san antonio but im from miami.
i dj at a few spots out here, thurs i do a college night, which i play alot of rock, mashups and some hiphop,
fri i do a lounge, house and top 40
then on sat a club where i play straight open format, from house to span to hiphop,
right now im using

2x Technics SL-1200MK2's
1x pioneer 909
2x Shure M44-7
Serato
and i got a jbl eon monitor,

to ppl starting up i would say that you get what you pay for, get cheap equitpment, get cheap results, and it takes alot of grinding, i did 5 yrs of workbefore i every played at a club, and when i play i try to play my best cuz u never know whos there, n always be humble, and listen to what ppl got to say, itmight not be the best advice but just listen,
someone ask if your trying to get music, just like they got nt for sneakers, theirs forums for music, some got free edits and what not, if not you can join apool pay $$ for the month n get music.

i also got 2 vestax pdx-2000 , with the ultra pitch and digital display, those r pretty good tables, i use to have a vestax pcm-05 pro 2, thats a pretty goodmixer, i just needed somethign with effects, at the club im at on sat they got a pioneer 800 and 2 cdjs, ive gotten use to the cdjs but vinyl is still better,i think the 800 is the best mixer out, poops on the 57,

i got a few mixes on my blog (check the sig) go and dl them and let me know what you think.
lets keep this thread alive

Newbie to ALL of this, curious on what to get for a "starter" system. & how much it would cost. most my music is on an external hard drive., ifthat helps

Been at it since '93 and have made a good living off it. Live in Vegas, was resident dj/music director at Hard Rock Hotel (Babys Nightclub then its secondinception Body English and was the OG DJ for Rehab for 4 seasons), Have played all over town at other spots (Tao, Lavo, LAX, PURE, Tryst, Moon, Lure {before itwas blush}) and may other one-offs etc in town as well as out of town. I now work for the Fertita Family which owns all the Station Casinos and the UFC. Iveplayed all over the US and some international spots as well. Its a grind, you not only have to have an ear for music, but be a musical historian, and a goodself-marketer. You run into a ton of new jacks and microwaves who have ZERO skill and talent who are in it for an excuse to wear a bedazzled t shirt, sport amohawk and for the check who just fell into a spot because they knew someone and its discouraging but the real cats always rise to the top and leave the posersin the dust. It took me a long time to get where im at in this business (i did raves all over so-cal, nevada and beyond for years prior). Im now getting intoother areas of the business and plan on being just as sucessfull at that as I am at DJ'ing. I owe pretty much everything to a fellow NT'er who is nolonger with us that I befriended quite some time before his Hard Rock residency began and who was nice enough to not only mentor me to become a better dj but abetter person as well.

I use

Mac Book Pro
Serato Scratch Live
Technics 1200s
Rane TTM-57 or
Pioneer DJM 909 or
Pioneer DJM 800
Ableton Live (production)
Pro-Tools (production and recording)
8-Core Mac Pro Tower (production and recording)

you dont need anything too fancy bro if you are just starting out. i suggest getting something used and inexpensive incase djing turns out not to be for you.do not get anything belt driven is like theeeeeeeee rule though. if you got a lil cheese look into some used technique 1200s and vestax mixer. and since yourin nyc they have that dj school so you could check that out to learn the basics. or do what i did and just read everything you can on the internet, try forumsfor djing and all that good stuff. then practice, practice, practice at doing everything the hard way and you'll be good soon enough.

but really the first step is what kind of dj do you want to be? do you wanna like club dj or do you like turntablism cause thats where things really differ.

read, read, read and read some more mang.

What the hell is a "cd scratcher"?

I have the same except i have an 05 vestax. It took me a while to get my 1st set up this past summer. Here's a pic of when i got it the 1st day. Since thenI've purchased a new 13"MBP and Serato SL1. I really wanted to get an Rane 57 but that can wait.. If you are looking to get some tables, searchcraigslist for used 1200's. You can probably find used Mk2's from $400-$600 depending on the condition.

is it just me or do u guys also get irritated when ur friends EXPECT them to put all of ur music onto their ipods. like look here playa....i've spent toomuch time and money to just give u everything like its just an answer to a test question. plus I might have some exclusives that I don't/can't sharewith u unless I put it on a mix.
