Anyone have a 4k Ultra HD television? Help

4k is gonna fad out like 3d and 4d

It's not a fad, it's the future since it's a resolution bump but there isn't much content out there because it's new and the companies still haven't decided what the best medium for distribution is.

I saw a couple sets yesterday. A Sony and Samsung TV and the picture was stunning.

Sony's got a store for 4K movies and shows and more is coming from them and others but for now it's not enough IMO unless money is not an issue.

A lot of the TV's have multicore CPU's which help in the upscaling process so normal HD content will look better but not better than native 4K content.

this. it's not some kind of gimmick like 3d.

it's an improvement of picture quality. SD->HD->UHD.

That analogy doesn't really work unless of course, eventually, everyone will have a Lambo?

5-7 years from now, I believe 4k is going to be the standard, you just have to wait for more support to come out.
I think he's trying to say you wont be able to use it to its full potential

I know that but the use of Lambo isn't the best example because eventually everyone will be able to use it's full potential while not everyone will own a Lambo.

I saw it as Lambo = UHD and "stop & go traffic" = lack of 4k content? Eventually everyone or most will have a UHD and 4k will be the standard.

1. You need a really, really big TV or to sit super close to appreciate it.

2. The content is not there yet to justify the purchase.

3. And this is the big one....who knows if the current infrastructure is even capable of providing the content once it comes out. The current state of broadband speeds and video compression indicates there would be serious difficulty providing the bandwith necessary to accommodate the massive amount of data required by a 4k broadcast.

We don't even 1080p cable yet and probably never will. The problem with 4K although its stunning is content, this gens game consoles aren't powerful enough to play games at 4K resolution, cable TV doesn't offer anything in 4K , 4K blu rays are a long ways off. It is a complete waste to drop 3 grand plus on a 4K set right now when the only thing you'll be able to do is watch the 4K demo video or watch the same movies over and over IF you have the Bravia that comes with its own server. since the file size is so large you can forget about downloading 4K movies and streaming them to your laptop unless your a Google fiber customer of course.

Hanks for the info guys. Basically it's like owning a 1080p flat screen in the year 2000 lol.

I just found out most channels don't even provide 1080p, ESPN is still using 720p. Guess this 4k will take years to actually be usable.

Exactly. No cable channels are above 720p bro. Only time we get 1080p content now is through blu ray, 1080p streams, or games.

Last time I checked not even the next gen consoles do 1080p for most games yet. Anyways 4k is good if you have access to 4k movies which are slowly rolling out. It also can be helpful if you have a strong graphics card and want to develop 4k stuff.

Yes 720p is correct for espn and will always be because its a sports channel.

720p is best for sports, it will lag with 1080

720p is a progressive-scan format that delivers a smoother image that stays sharper during motion

That is why espn broadcast in 720p

Also if you have a 42 inch tv or smaller you womt be able to tell the differnce between 1080p and 720p

No content fam. And the cheap 4K sets have weak refresh rates iirc. I think computer games (if your setup is pimp) and home made vids the only readily available 4K stuff.

its not a fad, its the future these companies are just putting them out now to see how much interest people have in them. I was reading an article that many movie theaters already are using 4K but people don't even notice the difference

So sports will never be 1080p? I have a 55 inch so it somewhat matters. I'll never buy anything under 50

Nope, it wont work right even if they did 1080p...

720p is perfect for sports especially fast moving sports like basketball ,soccer, baseball

Wait a year for real. Right now the only input that can display 4K at the image speed standard of 60hz is Display port and the problem is you will only see that on expensive computer monitors. HDMI 2.0 is coming soon. If your TV is straight then wait year.

Serious. Wait

The Only 4K content you will get now is PC video games and 1 porn site

You do know that technology advances right. I remember my boys use to say that PS3 was the pinnacle of graphics. It's hard to have foresight when it comes to technology but, it will always keep advancing especially when it comes to improving upon what's already there.

huh ... I thought the refresh rate is what matter. 60 to 240 is a big different not the 720 to 1080.

In addition I thought the PS4 could handle 4k?

A bit of clarification: 1080p is also progressive scan.  And under ideal situations, where either could be sent unadulterated to the consumers set, 1080p would undoubtedly trounce 720p's quality for larger television sets.

The problem is, its still a lot of data to transmit 1080p content and not every "HD" tv in homes can even show 1080p, with most maxing out at either 720p or 1080i (interlaced).

So, 720p has kind of become the standard.

Makes it seem like 4k is 20 years away then :lol

WTF was I thinking

i called 3D a bust before it even released. i wish i could have bet on that like people bet on the economy.

4k is awesome to look at. its expensive right now but the price will drop soon enough but who knows if it will ever take off.

what even supports 4k?

IMO i wouldnt buy anything that isnt supported by my cable box. If im buying a tv thats supposed to look amazing, my cable provider better be able to provide me with the channels to use my tv to its full potential.

ive seen 4k in person and off the special video they use. freakin crazy but i think we are a long way away or never even gonna get sports and regular shows in 4k

just me tho unless its changed recently

computer games support 4K right now no? also video recording like on DSLRs. Heck the Galaxy S5 can record 4K. So Apple should be able to do it on the Iphone 10.

I've seen the demo of the 4K TVs and yea when you got a 4K source, its awesome.

For cable/sat providers to do 4K, that I think will be a while. Might be due to bandwith issues. Sometimes they even compresss the signal now! (see compression blocks on fast scenes)

It's definitely the future, just dont know when it will be adopted by general public. Surprisingly theres still a lot of people who don't mind watching crappy compressed standard definition movies on their 1080P screens, so for the general consumer I don't think it will take off that fast. I dont even let my eyes get wasted watching standard def crap when I know I can get the HD version. 8o

Yep they do. The thing is once you do 4K 1080p games just dont look as good. I had a 1600p set up for a minute and it was great.

I watched the Video at 2560x1600. Not the Full on 4K image but I gotta say that you can see the make up and more. Seeing a gaping yambs with such detail is just weird in a way

Youtube and Vimeo already has UHD content these days, they also found a more efficient way to compress and deliver it. With the arrival of USB 2.0, it'll be easier to deliver UHD content.

Netflix is working on their UHD content too, I believe House of Cards are 4k. IIRC they also promised within a year or two for much more content and the article I read was from a few months ago.

Amazon and M-Go also has UHD streaming soon and with more and more people leaving their cable/satellite subscriptions for more online tv viewing such as Netflix, Amazon and Hulu, I think 4k will thrive in that category of viewers while mainstream tv gets caught up.

Sony is selling a UHD player that has a bout 50 movies that you have to buy/rent and download to the device and then view, I believe the player itself has 2TB of storage and could only fit a handful of movies at a time?

There are also upscaling on bigger screens, mostly noticeable on wide screen shots where small details are usually blurry like a tall skyscraper shots, the pedestriants walking like ants are usually blurry and unidentifiable while with UHD they are pretty clear. To most, this won't be enough to pay but the prices are constantly going down. A $6k 55" Samsung 6 months ago is going for about $2500 now. I also like Samsungs One-Connect box which can be updated in the future.

As some people have already said--there isn't much support out right now for it.

Wait till the support is widely available and price drops down.

Think of this like how people wanted to buy Plasmas back in the early 2000's when there wasn't much support out for them. Although, you could buy a 4k TV now as use it to it's capabilities using mediums such as Netflix. I think season 3 of House of Card will be filmed using 4k.

Picture is absolutely stunning though.
