Here is the simplest way i have seen it broken down.

There is ATT NExt for 12 months and for 18 months.  Now it means you have to pay at least 12 months on your phone before upgrading or 18 months before upgrading.  Lets roll with the 12 month example

Lets say you pay the FULL UP FRONT price for a samsung galaxy s4 ($640 or so).

For the 12 Month plan for ATT Next they amortize that amount over 20 months so you pay $32 per month with 0 up front cost

With that $32 per month you also pay a built in subsidy that is in your bill already which tends to be around $20 per month.  This is what allows people to pay the upgrade price.  (this is the whole catch that this does not come out of your bill if you do ATT NEXT)

So

After 12 Months you pay $32 and $20 per month = $624 for the phone which is worth $640 full price.  And you don't get to keep it...but hey you get the luxury of upgrading early

But lets say you love your phone and want to keep it for the full 20 month pay off period that ATT NEXT offers.

$32 and $20 per month for 20 months  = $1040 for a phone that is worth $640

No surprise!

Apple Sells Record 4 Million iPhone 6 in Single Day

Demand for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 was expected to be high, but Apple just smashed its own record with this new flagship duo. According to the company, Apple moved a whopping 4 million units via pre-orders during the first 24 hours.

To put this figure in perspective, Apple sold half as many iPhone 5 devices during the pre-order period -- 2 million units in 24 hours. The company did not offer pre-order sales of the iPhone 5s and 5c last year.

MORE: iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus - What Should You Buy?

This momentum bodes well for a very successful launch day come Sept. 19 for Apple. Last year the company moved 9 million devices during the launch weekend of the iPhone 5s and 5c. And based on the lukewarm reaction to the colorful 5c, most of those sales likely went to the iPhone 5s.

With the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple is releasing two premium flagship phones, though it seems much of the interest is going toward the larger iPhone 6 Plus. This is based on shipping dates for pre-order sales. For instance, AT&T's website listed November as the ship date for the iPhone 6 Plus during the pre-order period, compared to a max of 35 days for the 6.

Between the two devices, the 6 Plus is not just the bigger smartphone but the more advanced. Only the Plus features optical image stabilization for the camera, and only it offers dual-pane mode for various apps. You also get a higher-resolution 1920 x 1080-pixel screen, compared with 1334 x 750 pixels for the iPhone 6.

Of course, Samsung hopes to spoil Apple's launch party by reminding shoppers that its upcoming Galaxy Note 4 has an even sharper display, pen input and Ultra Low Power mode for saving battery life. But at this point it looks like Samsung has a tough challenge ahead.

Regarding all the Samsung attacks.

Samsung tells everyone iPhone 6 Plus is here, can dump their Galaxy Notes and switch over now

Samsung continues to devote an embarrassingly large amount of their advertising not to their own products but to Apple's. In Samsung's latest ad, they pretty much admit they were the manufacturing equivalent of the stereotypical "FIRST!" message board commenter, releasing the super-sized Galaxy Note phablet before they, it, and the market were ready. They then make fun of their own product, highlighting quips like "you look like you're talking into a piece of toast", and "the note is an unwieldy beast", before diving head-first into the notion that Apple is imitating them by releasing the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. So what's really going on here?

Apple is patient. They weren't the first to make an MP3 player. They weren't the first to make a smartphone. They weren't the first to make a tablet. And they weren't the first to make a phablet (or "tablone" if you want to sound even sillier). Apple couldn't care less if they're first-to-market with a new category of device. They simply want to make sure that, when they do go to market, it's with what they consider to be the very best device in its category. That's why they wait — so they can figure out problems they're uniquely positioned to solve.

For example, Apple wasn't first to market with an LTE smartphone. The HTC Thunderbolt came out months and months beforehand. The battery life was horrid, even with a screen made larger merely to cover how much extra battery they had to shove in there to power those early generation chips.

Apple, by contrast, waited until next-generation LTE chips were available and could be implemented in a way that was power efficient, providing the same great battery life as before in a phone that, while taller, was also smaller by volume.

Likewise, Apple has stuck to the display technology they prefer, not willing to compromise with SAMOLED or PenTile subpixels just to stretch out their screens. Apple waited until they could get a Retina HD display, with photo alignment of the liquid crystals for higher contrast, dual-domain pixels for full sRGB color accuracy at wider viewing angles, a better polarizer, and an even thinner assembly. Instead of just an iPhone with a bigger screen, they waited until they could make an iPhone 6 Plus.

Now, I've used Wacom tablets for years and I like the idea of a relatively small digitizer with hand-writing recognition that I can hold in my hand. While Samsung calls it "innovative", I've used Tablet PCs that offered just that, albeit at larger sizes, for over a decade. Still, it's cool. What's not so cool is the software experience. Based on Google's Android operating system and cemented over by Samsung's own proprietary interface layer, it's often so disjointed and incoherent that it severely harms the overall usability, at least for me.

The fake stitched leather back of the Galaxy Note, made out of Samsung's go-to-plastic, doesn't help either.

(Nor, frankly, does this ad where Samsung chooses to highlight an app that ripped off its interface from the acclaimed djay app for iPhone and iPad... )

Samsung finishes up with some tweets praising their Galaxy Note series and slamming Apple, again for doing what Apple has always done. That's likely because, all these years later, Samsung still doesn't understand it. They can see the what, but they can't wrap their head around the how or the why.

Apple seems to believe they have the software, services, and hardware in place to make bigger screen devices now that better serve the growing market of mobile as primary computing device. They seem to believe they can use the bigger screen to provide a higher-level of experience.

Samsung no doubt feels the same. They simply differ on what that experience should be. And that's fine. Having different opinions is fine. In fact, it's great for consumers.

The sad truth is, however, it's not so great for Samsung. Previously anyone who wanted a giant phone — or nano tablet — pretty much had to go with Samsung. Now anyone can choose to go with iPhone. Which is probably the best explanation of all for this rather rushed, ill-considered ad. Especially considering that the only thing the ad does really, really well is announce to Samsung customers they can finally ditch their Galaxy Notes and go get an iPhone 6 Plus...

Thats not Correct, with all mobile share plans on VZW and ATT there is a Account plan (the amount of gb you want) and a line access charge.

If you do ATT Next you get a discount on the Line access charge, if you are on a 2 yr plan you pay the full line access charge (for example 15 bucks vs 35 or 40 bucks). The cost to finance a phone offsets your line access discount so at the end of the day you are paying the same no matter what plan you are on. The only time you save money is if your phone is paid off on Next or Edge and you opt to not get a new phone, while a 2 yr contract youre still paying the built in subsidy even if you dont buy a new phone.

I'm leaning more and more towards the 6+. Still worried about it fitting in my pockets. |I

My go to jeans are a pair of 3sixteen ST and the pockets are crazy tight, I already have problems getting my hands in and out with a 4s or anything else for that matter.

Cop a folio case and just carry it in hand/ shirt pocket/ back pocket. Pant tight ness wont be an issue, this phone is lighter/thinner than the 5 and 5s, the issue will be height, with the top of the phone peaking out

I haven't heard about discounts on line access at all.

If that is the case maybe its a way to get people off their unlimited if they are grandfathered in?

Has anyone else found themselves rather unmoved by the new phone? In the months leading up I was beyond excited. But now I'm just like... Meh. Instill haven't watched the unveil in full even though it's on my Apple TV in its entirety.

I figure I'll go to one of the sprint stores around me and fiddle with it and decide then whether it's worth leaving my 5 behind for. What do you guys think?

There isn't a discount for ATT i have unlimited and they tried me with that crap and at no point the mentioned that to me.

I just rechecked my order status on AT&T and it went from the beginning of November to the beginning of October. I can live with that, looks like they were just being cautious with those original dates.

There is no extra $20 what they actually do have is a -25 monthly discount on your mobile plan . What I have is a $175 plan with 10GB of data and unlimited talk and text with 3 people with iPhones . So with the monthly next (27$)it moves it to $197 a month with three people

People on JUMP, Next, etc aren't keeping the phone long enough to pay the full price .. that's whole point.

Dude was right there's no difference btwn me giving my phone in and getting a new phone vs selling your phone and using that $ for a new phone.
thank the gods for jump. I paid 60 so far for my s5 and ill be looking to get the 6 next month maybe.

Your line access is cheaper on Next, the reason it is cheaper is because the cost to finance a phone will add 25+ back on your bill so it evens each other out/ are close to each other in price. I think the issue in this thread is you have people on older plans and are confused. Back in the day you would pick your minutes, if you want text, and if you want data, if you had a family plan youd pay 9.99 for each additional line. Now Text and web are unlimited so you pick your plan based off data and then you pay 40 bucks or 15 bucks (25 if plan is under 10gb) for each line.

Apparently there is a discount but you have to go with their mobile share plans with ATT next which come with different plans

I plan on doing the same thing once it hits stores. I might cop a 5S when my contract is up in November if it turns out that i can do without the 6.

yea, Next is saving you money if you were to pay for phone in full and just sell your phone on ebay/craigslist and use that money on new phones, but if you always finance your phones you arent saving any money.

For example. Say im on ATT next and I`m on a 10gb plan, 100 for plan 15 for my line access = 115 a month come pared to 140 on a 2 yr contract. If I buy the iphone full price out of pocket and dont finance I do take an initial hit yes, but lets say every yr I sell my iphone on craigslist for 3-400 bucks, that means any time I want a new phone I just pay the difference of 2-300 bucks which is essentially the 2 yr price, thus "beating" the system.

Personally I'm sitting on a 4s, so even though the new ones don't come with all the bells and whistles the Samsung phones do, I know my phone will work in 3 years if necessary. I got my upgrade right before the 5s came out and felt like you did. Now I'm really ready for a new phone plus I'm sure the new iOS will make my current phone run like crap. Everyone paying $600-800 is beyond me, but that's their cash. If once you get it in hand and it still doesn't move you remember there will be a new one in approx. 12 months.

I'm not about that life man. What would I look like trying to **** on these hood poodles with a brand new 6+ and a "folio" case.

Feel the exact same way. Besides 4G, bigger screen, faster processor, not much has changed since my 4s...

Unlimted / grandfathered plans is a different convo in itself, for example there are people with unlimited who only use 1gb of data a month so they actually save money on Mobile share.

And dudes need to realize Apple takes the Car model approach to their devices, Cars go about 5 yrs before changing up major, same applies to apple. I think dudes saying they arent impressed are just trying to validate not wanting to spend money and they essentially shouldnt be buying a new phone. I buy phones just because I like tech and want to play with new features, if youre not into that you literally should be buying phones every 3 yrs. Someone going from a 4S to a 6 is seeing a true upgrade, of course there isnt a major diff between the 5 and the 6, use common sense guys.
