man...it's been 2 months since I'm officially moved in and working from home has made the apt feel like home even more.

It's been a process, and the upkeep and cleaning is never ending even though it's only me and my girl here.

For the single cats who stay solo: you guys ever thought about doing a studio? I've been thinking lately from a 1 bedroom. I think spacing can be cool if you lay out correctly. I'm rarely at home and don't really have big gatherings.

It'll take less energy to heat and cool the place. Cleaning will take less time too. I've done my research and saving is only about $300 or so a month. Wouldn't be the primary reason for scaling down. Until I'm hitched, I'm rolling with the minimalist set up. No grand piano or anything yet to take up mad space. Lol.

Not gonna lie I have thought about it... but I'm pretty sure I couldn't scale back from my current large 1 bedroom to a studio. Not enough space, especially if you ever entertain

I work so much and I don't like bringing strangers into the crib so I never host big parties. The only issue I see is my wardrobe being able to fit nicely in a studio. I started looking into them because studios are easier to come by since a couple would most likely opt for a 1 bedroom and like you said, if you entertain you can close off the room.

I've been thinking about a studio lately. Developed the bad habit of sleeping in my living room on the couch most nights. The only time I sleep in my bedroom is when my girl is here. Outside of that its basically an oversized closet.

I think most folks in bigger cities go the small apartment route because rent is killer. I'm in SoCal and nice apartments around the 700 sq ft can easily surpass $3k in rent in nicer areas. In a sub-middle class or lower middle class area, it's around $1-1.3k per month.

My friend up in the Bay is commuting like 30 mins to work to get a lower priced apartment (1 bedroom at $1700 per month). Reason why I never entertained relocating up there though it's mad nice

I refuse to pay over $2k per month for rent (essentially throwing money away) so I need to finesse it.


How do you dudes store ironing board? It's gonna be hard with a studio unless you have it on a hinge that can be lowered/raised from the wall. I know I need cubicle dividers to store my clothes already. I also like to read a lot of books, may have to go the e-reader route, which I really dislike.

Thanks for the vids, man. I personally refuse to get high quality stuff until I get a house. I know Ikea gets a lot of crap, but their price point/strategy is cheap enough to use for years so you can your money's worth. I have several pieces that I bought like 7+ years ago and still going strong. Will continue to go that route

I could never do a studio as a primary residence. But I am giving serious consideration to buying a studio or a junior 1-bedroom on the other side of the country since I plan on going back and forth quite a bit in the next few years.

The plan is to find something new, central, with good amenities. Furnish it as cheaply as possible (while looking nice). Basically something that photographs well and feels almost like a hotel.

Since there may be months on end when I wont be in town, I want to Airbnb it and have one of those Airbnb management companies take care of cleaning, linens, key pickup/dropoff/etc. They charge like 10-15% of the booking which seems fairly reasonable. And it only needs to be occupied 1/3 - 1/2 of the month to break even.

Only downsides to this are potential damage to the unit (Airbnb's insurance policy sucks), noise complaints, the building strata banning short-term rentals, and the increase in supply of units on Airbnb + the subsequent drop in average nightly rate.

Anyone own property out-of-state/province and done something like this?

yep, lamp & table were $20, and sofa was $800 ....not bad, rug from walmart ....

You're in LA right?

I really think you're better off buying instead of downgrading, if at all possible.

At the moment I'm not on my own, I rent a 2 bed apartment, but I'm moving some time next year. I looked at a few rentals just recently (thought I was going to move but ended up not) and even inland (San Gabriel, Pomona etc.) a decent 1 bed is between $800-1.1K, so now i'm 100% set on buying most likely a condo when I move out.

you're right that renting is a waste of funds, LA county & some cities provide first time home owners with grants for down payment & closing cost, some are $10-15K+, often free as long as you live in the condo/home for a certain time.

I wouldn't downgrade to a studio, unless you really have to. personally I do quite a bit of cooking & baking, studio kitchens tend to be built for midgets, lack of counter space etc...

i think i'm gonna make the move into a studio in jan. moving out of state, but also keeping my apt in LA since i'll be back and forth for at least the first year. only thing that i know that will suck is the entire studio getting hotter when i cook and the smell sticking to my bedsheets, clothes, etc. i've seen a lot of studios on apt therapy that were laid out proper

get bigger than you cam afford. a studio is a waste. plus it will be hard to unload. thing is, dont believe pics, go look at the unit itself.
