I'm very open to living in Texas for that reason alone - no state income tax.

As a future physician, that will be huge. Will help my girlfriend as well since she is going to be a pharmacist. Throw in lower cost of living, and it's a no-brainer.

Eventually, though, gotta make the move back to LA.

Austin is on point , arounf the same price ranges as Houston and Dallas , may be a bit more expensive . Traffic is a joke thou , it's almost l.a. Levels since it's pretty much one highway thought the city. The yambs are nice since u.t is there . San Marcos is pretty chill too which is in between Austin and San Antonio. Whatever you do don't make the mistake I did and move to boring *** San antonio

I'm thinking about going to LA for graduate school in a few years... Spending a few years in LA/San Fran, then coming back around 33-35 and settling with my lady in Dallas or Houston...

Austin was actually my first choice, but there were no openings at the data center I was looking into. Austin is as hipster as it gets. They're continually building new apartments and I would say cost of living is comparable to Houston. And yes, traffic is horrible. It's also the most liberal place in TX, which makes it an oddity. If you want to make a comparison to CA, it's probably like San Francisco.

Anyway, Austin sounds pretty much exactly how all of my friends have been describing it, haha.

I thought about moving to TX, primary Houston for a minute since cost of living is still low and there are good paying jobs out there. My friend just moved back to LA from spending several years there. She said $1k on rent a month will get you a nice place there.

I flew out for a job interview. Dudes were friendly, like most I found in the mid-west, very opposite of Los Angeles, where I am from. I landed in Houston mad late and had to drive to Stafford. I was kinda shook when Sam Houston turned into a toll road, and I didn't know I had the pass in the rental car

I wasn't used to seeing everything so spaced out though.

I live in Austin and the traffic is horrible.  I swear there was a poll that showed it was the worst in the country last year.

And yes, they continue to build apartments everywhere, but the roads remain under construction and inadequate.

My advice is look elsewhere, Austin is way overrated.

what jobs are all in Austin though?  People were like "go there" 10 years ago sayin it was a cool place but I dunno how much of that was related to the last big housing boom.  People in Texas are all really "liberal" like that though?  That kinda surprises me with the all the old energy $$$$

Austin is too small for my tastes. Too congested. I love the hills and lake though.

I prefer Houston. I like how spread out everything is, great food options, an hour drive from the beach. So many different cultures there.

Austin caters to hipsters, and it's not as racially diverse.

I will say, Houston is a melting pot of different cultures. I love the racial diversity here. Again, very reminiscent of L.A..

In terms of careers, Houston is big for energy, IT and nursing. Can't speak for Austin, but I'm assuming IT is huge there. Our IT lab is located there and it was one of the first launch sites for Google Fiber and U-Verse Gigapower.

I've only been to San Antonio to visit the River Walk and the Alamo, but I've heard it's a very nice place to settle.

That blows, man.  The black population in general is very small in SA, right?

Maybe it's just the spots my ex's best friend likes to frequent, but it seemed like hipsters were steadily filling up SA too.  

On the bright side, at least SA doesn't have a pan handling bum population that nearly outnumbers the college kids.  These bums act crazy entitled too.

Yeah real small number . The hipsters are taking over big time in s.a. Especially in my area and in stone oak , all my co workers tell me to move to Dallas or back to Louisiana since we have 7 days off, but if I do that I might as well move back to l.a. And just fly in and out for work
