Not necessarily.  It's more so learning from the observations and experiences of others.  In many cases, you are running into a dead end in a certain area of your life and the author is able to communicate a fix in a way that no one else has been able to communicate to you in the past.  I've ready over 20 "self help" books in the past year and have learned so much that I haven't seen before.  Just think of it like school at your own pacing.

As for books?

Total Money Makeover- Dave Ramsey.  Tackles debt and wealth from a psychological and emotional standpoint.  Learn how to get out of debt and build wealth.

Millionaire Next Door- Thomas Stanley.  Analyzes the financial habits of millionaires.

Trump: The Art of the Deal- Donald Trump.  How he negotiated and got great deals on real estate.

It is probably the only time I ever tell people "watch the movie instead". In my opinion the movie is way better, and I read somewhere that even Palahniuk thinks the movie is better too.

They're equal up until the ending and yeah, the movie ending is def. much better.

Ive read most of these within the past two years. I highly recommend them to anyone. However you have to read them with an open mind. By open mind I mean that some of the themes go against things that you have been taught your whole life to believe by schools, the media and the government.

Secrets of the Millionare Mind - T. harv Eker
Think & Grow Rich: A Black Choice - N. Hill & Dennis Kimbro
The Total Money Makeover - Dave Ramsey

Not life changing, but ones that have stuck with me over the years:

Chinese Cinderella - Adeline Yen Mah (autobiography)
Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee

Not life-changing in the sense of a major philosophical revelation or anything like that, but definitely changed my

outlook on life (in the biological sense, not a personal sense) in general.
