hey wats up guys. I was wondering is calf raises stunts growth becuase i want to do them but im 13. Would it damage my legs or anything like that. Also, do youguys know any other exercises to help jump higher and do better in basketball?
thanks

no they don't. Just don't go to hard the first time or you wont be able to walk for a couple days

your whole body needs to be strong to jump higher
especially the legs and the core

calf raises alone will not really be that effective

I don't know about stunting growth though. Maybe you should ask a doctor.

All it takes is a little logic. How high do you jump w/o bending your knees?

Focus on your legs and core and make sure you're balanced. Also, work on your flexibility.

Regarding stunting your growth, again, all it takes is a little logic. What does your body need to grow? Nourishment.

The only worry you should have about weight lifting is over doing it or doing it improperly.

I use to research this stuff (increasing your vert) years ago...

From what I gathered, when you do squats, instead of coming up slow like a BodyBuilder would do, you must make a quick "explosive" movement. Thisactivates a different Twitch Fiber.

Instead of doing 8-12 reps like a BodyBuilder would do, use enough weight so you can only do 5-8 reps.

The reason I keep mentioning "bodybuilder" is becaue they train for hypertrophy (muscle size), instead of strength/power/speed.

As for the calf raises, you should do them on one leg to increase the resistance. And I'm not sure if it actually does anything, but when I do them with myfeet facing outwards instead inwards, it seems to hit a different area of the calves.

Dont lift hard til you're at least 15-16 yrs old. Its not good for you, you're still growing. You can always get stronger, you cant alwaysgrow...Real talk.

I think if you gotta ask this question, you should probably stay out of the weight room...no offense

You wanna get better at basketball, well having a 40 inch vert is just one aspect

how about you just stick to basketball drills until you're older and a little older

research plyometerics...just like 99.9% of everyone on Niketalk has at one point in their life

Wouldn't that be even more harmful to his growth?
I'm not a body builder but I'm just assuming

Doing calf raises really won't help your vertical that much. What helps you jump higher is your hamstrings and glutes, thats where you build all your powerfrom, not your calfs. So I would suggest doing squats and hamstring pushups...make sure you're doing the right technique though.

weight lifting at 13 is completely fine, it won't stunt your growth. what you need to do is learn proper form and not lift weight you can't handle

Pylometrics and sprints will be more beneficial to you than doing calf raises.

Calf raises are a complete waste of time, you would be better served using that time to work on your basketball skills. What you should be doing is building upyour strength by first learning how to handle your bodyweight by doing squats, pull ups, dips, and push ups. Once you can handle your bodyweight, focus onexplosive movements such as plyometrics but remember to start out slow and make sure you know what your body is capable of handling. Doing sprints will alsohelp.
