Prices ain't dropping in cali...at least not here in nor cal and probably not down there either anytime soon.

The best time to have bought a house in California would've been 2008 - shortly after the bubble popped and the housing market crashed, prices were dropping to all time lows.
Since then, prices have risen and have not declined since.
None of this is to discourage you, because there still can be deals found in foreclosure's and housing auctions - with some houses that's may or may not need any remodeling.
